    • It's good to know it doesn't jump back out if you drop the stylus a little bit, and it stayed in the grove well during the loud bit.

I didn't stick around to see if he played any run in and out - who's worried about a bit of rumble when you're playing Bay City Rollers in the summer at the beach. It was running true and straight and AT always made a fair cartridge.

Techmoan is my go to Coffee and cozy Sunday morning "Learn about bizarre and obscure audio format/niche device" watch

  • I really don't see the point of these things.

    • I agree. It would be fun for a once-off event at a picnic or something, but I guess most of these will end up sitting in a drawer somewhere unused. Too expensive for what it is. It probably made more sense as a portable device in the 1980s, before digital streaming, when people's music collection already was on vinyl.

      • Didn't have a desire for one, until saw the vid. But of limited use for me.
(My vinyl collection is from the 80's, CD's from the 90's,… All unused - now stream)

        at a picnic
Vid review above stresses the need for a good solid base to position this on.
It's not for portable use, just portable.

Also has RCA output. But use Bluetooth to RCA device to handle streaming on amp. And there's a turntable here, somewhere.

i can see people buying this as an aldis novelty for $99 but $340???

          nah

          • +1

@tonyjzx: By the vid, it is a quality build by Audio Technica, unlike almost anything sold cheap @Aldi!
            A niche market for this.

@INFIDEL: The point being the benchmark price seems to be about $99

              • @YellowKnight: and aldis is known for occasionally selling turntable products every so often

the 'quality' of this product does not look all that impressive going by matt taylor's vids

                • @tonyjzx: Having consulted for the main supplier of consumer electronics to Aldi, its rarely of good quality (why I was asked to help), just cheap.

He remarked on several aspects of the build quality components in the vid. And in benchtest assessment (accuracy of speed & negligible flutter).

              • @YellowKnight: Tell us when it falls to your made up "benchmark price" of $99.

              • @YellowKnight: As you said - don't see the point of these things

It's a very niche product, for people who want to carry around transport a record player (& records), reminiscent of the 80's original.

80,000 Anniversary editions were originally released & sold out. But those were directed to specialist users & collectors for 60th anniversary of AT. Based on the limited cult following of the original Sound Burger design.

Many who have a vinyl collection, would already have a good audio set up & turntable. Unlikely they have the need to regularly play vinyl elsewhere, requiring this.
Or want to play their vinyl via Bluetooth.

Unlikely to ever be a mass market for these to bring price down to your $99!

Alternatively, there are turntables with Bluetooth output. Just not as portable or 80's "stylish"… or much cheaper.
Or add a Bluetooth adapter to a turntable if that's what you want.

              • @YellowKnight: Around $99…
About all you can usually get are small portable turntables to mp3 with RCA out (us$50 on aliexpress) - reflecting the likely low quality of the unit & sound.
Possibly other cheap units with Bluetooth.

They're the type of products bought in cheap by Aldi, with one of their trademarks added.

Certainly not up to Audio Technica quality, style & heritage!

Bought a cheap portable turntable to mp3 from Aldi - returned the POS. Terrible quality, flutter, & poor sound. Was not kind to records!
Couldn't find a replacement stylus, so would have had a very limited life.

Whereas, this one has a easily & readily replaceable stylus & belt. Test in vid showed stylus was a good weight - necessary not to wreck records.
Both important for protection of records & longer life of turntable!

    • They have a good unique sound vinyl I dunno I can’t personally be bothered setting it up though lol

  • A vinyl walkman with bluetooth.

    • Without being able to be used as a portable player like a walkman!
To use, need to set horizontal on a solid base not affected by vibration.

  • i want one but i can't help but think of all the records i could buy for that money
