    This seems expensive still

    • What’s a fair price?

        17$ Lencent from Ali express

        • +4

Lencent have professional reviews, tear downs, etc?

Do they make their own chargers or are they rebrands?

            • +4

@h0dl: I couldn't see anything. I just wondered if there was anything beyond price with the recommendation.

                • +3

@h0dl: I think so? Maybe I'm missing something.

Could you please link to any professional reviews, tear downs?

Believe it or not… Australian certification is important to some people

          • +8

@Ryanek: In addition, some other things that may be of importance:

            • quality components are used
            • the product is well engineered
            • some assurance the product will handle unexpected scenarios
            • standby power use
            • decent output
            • longevity
            • track record of a brand

User reviews are of limited use, especially in smaller quantities. So many of them are simply "I plugged it in and the device started charging."

            • @ihfree: Plugged in and charging is quite good for a user review. Most of the AliExpress reviews I see for products are rating it 5 stars with the comment "haven't tried yet but looks good"

If anyone else on this thread needs further assistance on how to Google, let me know.

          • +1

@h0dl: That's the Amazon product listing with user reviews. That's not what was asked for and doesn't answer my question. It's nice that you can just Google but it doesn't really matter if you're not answering the question that was asked.

            • -1

@ihfree: Lol. It's a 65w PD universal GaN charger, with built in safety features, with solid reviews that you can pick up from Ali Express for 20 bucks. If you need any more reassurance that your 20 bucks is well spent, I don't know how to help you.

              • +4

                @h0dl:

I don't know how to help you.

It's OK not to know - you can either politely say it or simply not reply rather than accusing people of being unable to use Google.

Different people want different things from chargers hence the question. Given the releases under different brands and the wide range of OEMS, it is useful to know more about what you are buying.

                • @ihfree: The information I provided isn't enough for you to spend 20 dollars on this item?

                  • +1

@h0dl: There's a reason they're cheap. I would suggest not leaving it unattended.

                    • @Ryanek: How am I leaving it unattended? Did I not provide you useful information from a simple Google search?

                      • +3

@h0dl: User SmoothCactus actually tore down a Lecent product. You should have a read - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/14210837/redir

                        • @Ryanek: 👍

                        • +1

@Ryanek: Now that was a damn useful post reference, thanks.

Personally, having seen even decently respectable chargers with problems, there's no way on earth I would use a generic $20 high power charger from Ali- that's the place I go to for cheap garbage that doesn't come with fire risk.

Sure, lots of people have okay experiences, but having some familiarity with how Chinese QC processes work (laughs sarcastically) I'm not going to place faith in Amazon or Ali reviews where "it charged my phone okay so it's great"

Looks like h0dl's google skills needs some improving.

                  • +4

@h0dl: No, personally I am not comfortable buying these unknown devices. I am connecting thousands of dollars of devices to chargers - why would I skimp?

The brand is a complete unknown and reviews are done by users who don't know the product from a technical standpoint. If 150 people say that the product is OK, it may suggest it works but doesn't guarantee correct output, longevity, quality of components, design, etc. All of these things are answered to a degree by professional reviews and tear-downs. Reviews are also open to manipulation.

More prominent brands come under more scrutiny and are pulled apart and the power output is analysed. This rarely happens with smaller/unknown brands.

If you are happy with a random $17 charger, that is fine. You are an adult who can use Google and make your own decisions. Others might have different wants when it comes to chargers which is why I asked the question. Having the information in a comment makes it easier for other users to make a decision.

                • @ihfree: Im buying the one in OPs post as you dont (profanity) around with adapters

    • +4

Depends. You can prob get cheaper 65w from random Chinese brands that you run the risk of overheating and shutting down. Each to their own I guess

      • I got my $25 Erunto, works fine, no overheating.
No more efficient than the old Dell charger, which costs a lot more, but way smaller.
I have seen dodgy chargers from China, but many years ago.

      • +9

Years ago I bought a no-name USB charger. One day, there was a loud bang and a big spark, it was burning hot and smoking. It seemed fine right up until the day it blew up. I still buy random things, but if it plugs into mains power, I'll only get a reputable brand or at least one where someone has done a teardown and determined it's safe. It's just not worth taking chances with something as dangerous as mains electricity

I have two Zyron 65W chargers. One is at home powering my soldering iron fine. The second one I brought with me on holiday now. It died halfway through. Fortunately I brought a backup Anker one as I didn't have full confidence in Zyron yet.

A charger dying when you're at home isn't the biggest deal. It's a huge pain if it happens when you're away on holiday though.

        • +1

Exactly why I just pay up for a known brand. Nothing wrong with a Zyron for a soldering iron, but just seems the lesser known brands seem to still fall over when it counts. And we are talking $20 here and there so I just pay the extra dollary-doo’s

  • +7

You could get it for $55 delivered on ebay with ebay plus.
    Multiple sellers.

Same price now at Officeworks and Amazon.

I use this as my travel chatrger. 45 watt works well for my laptop, and my pixel never gets much over 20W charge rate.

Have a 1 meter extension ord and the various pligs for whatever region i'm going tol.

has worked well on a few trips.

  • Isn't this a better deal?

    • you can get the belkin now. the zyron ships in mid october

Good guys commercial also has a 65W GaN charger for just $32 with 5 years warranty (normally $79 on standard good guys)

  • Does this work with Apple Macbook Pro (2021 model, 14-inch screen)?
This charger has 65W power, but the chargers coming with the Macbook Pro are wither 67W or 96W.

    • Yes, just slower.

      • Thanks. Don’t need fast charging as it would require the included 96W MagSafe adapter.

if you have a bday with jbhifi its another $10 off

  • How can something that's universal, and has universal in the name, be optimised for certain devices?

    • +3

      Marketing my friend.

  • I bought this for $40 using the $10 perks - see here

Even if you don't have perks, you should ideally price match with from here and pay $50.

    • Pretty good deal. Shame no Perks credit available now. Will keep an eye on it.
Was it easy for JB Hi Fi to price match this?

      • +1

yes very easy, you just chat with them and they will price match for you and then you use perks/gift cards etc.

    • JB added the $16 postage so won't match.

      • +1

Oh wow really, didn’t happen to me. May be try again in a while

        • Probably cos I'm in Melb…

  • Sorry, new to fast charging. Can I use any USB-C cable to get the max 65W or does it need to be a higher specified one?

    • The cable needs to be rated for it. You can plug any cable in but if it doesn't detect the right emark chip then it'll limit the power transfer to a lower value.

  • I've got two of these and one I use with an 130w Dell XPS. It gets flogged and gets quite hot (as expected). Well built and hasn't missed a beat. I'm glad I spent the extra money and didn't buy a bargain unit off Amazon for this particular purpose.

    • +1

      Do you mean Heymix? ;p

  • this or the ankers?

    • Without knowing which Anker you want, I'd say steer clear of this unit. My one disconnects from power outlets waaay too easily!

  • Nintendo Switch

    Would this brick my switch?

    • Nope. Third-party docks were the issue, IIRC.

  • +1

Really do not recommend this charger. It doesn't plug in strongly enough into sockets! Minor tugs seemingly pull it out. Very annoying!
Try to get something with the extra grounding prong because this thing is too flimsy.

    Additionally, it runs HOT!

    • +1

Have not found any of the above to be the case. You work for Anker or something?

    • +1

That is absolutely true, I thought only my unit does that.

      Additionally, it runs HOT!

I haven't experience this, but then I use it for MacBook Air and iPhone/iPad so probably not overusing it
