Doesn’t this laptop have expanding battery issues?

    • +4

Can you elaborate a bit more?

    • +3

Can you expand a bit more on what this issue is

    • the battery swelling and over heating.
many say that, one claim his work place send hundreds back.
they are all talking about the 2in1 if i remember correctly.

  • Is there a warranty period? If so who covers postage ?

    • 3 mths return to sender warranty!

    • There is a 3-month warranty, period

  • "2 x Display Port over USB Type-C™ (with optional Thunderbolt™3"

so are we getting the TB3 or not…. ?

  • slight out of topic.
if i want laptop with usb C that can output 4k60hz, i need to make sure the usb C has profile of display port, PD, and thunderbolt 2, 3, or have to be 4 ?

  • so i guess this model will connect to a dock and output display and charge laptop via usb c port at the same time. so what is "with optional Thunderbolt™3" and is it included? Can we obtain a tax invoice with GST listed so i can claim the gst via the TOURIST REFUND SCHEME (TRS) ?

Same as my question, probably not tb.
The other model listed above (more expensive) has thunderbolt on its spec. Not optional like this one. Again as mentioned many times this refub shops are just don't put enough effort to list proper specs. The excuse is we are too busy…

  • @Metrocom got anything with integrated 4G?

  • HGTSEP code is $10 off and it works too for thoose that dont have ebay plus

  • thanks op i purchased one for the kid. the specs seemed ok hope battery is ok and lasts for a reasonable time.

Going to repaste this from the last 8th Gen thread (doesnt just apply to this model)…..

Anything with an 8th Gen laptop CPU in it is going to thermal throttle, even if you repaste the CPU (which you should do anyways)

You can mitigate the high temps (but not the throttling, it has a fixed 20W TDP limit from memory) with this to undervolt:

    https://www.techpowerup.com/download/techpowerup-throttlesto…

and this to (better) control the fan:

    https://github.com/hirschmann/nbfc

or possibly this (because Dell are terrible at letting you control fans:

    https://github.com/AaronKelley/DellFanManagement

    • So its like design flaw of 8th Gen?

      • +1

Yes, common flaw of Intel 8th Gen mobile/laptop chips, especially

Though the desktop 8th Gen can be a little warm too (due to thermal solution used in the integrated heat spreader)

Having said that (and to explain my repeat posts on 8th Gen refurb listings perhaps better) i own both a laptop and desktop 8th Gen…the laptop is a Asus ZenBook with one in it, im just aware it has limitations….my posts on 8th Gen listings is just informational, to make people aware

Nothing worse than getting one with dried out thermal paste that struggles and thinking youve been had, because it groans under basic tasks like 10+ tabs in a browser.

Thermal repasting is almost a required first step on these. I redo my personal laptop with one in once a year. It also lives on a laptop stand to increase airflow under it (as its usually in a fixed location on my desk with an external keyboard - i have a simple usb switcher than allows me to share my USB peripherals - keyboard, mouse,. speakers and webcam) between the laptop and desktop - not a KVM…i manually switch inputs on the monitor if both laptop and desktop are on (extremely rare), if not the monitor picks the correct output automatically

For anything heavier than casual work, i murder many more electrons with my desktop with an i7 8700K in it. The i7 8700K has been delidded and lives under a Scythe FUMA 2 (rev b) air cooler, (not overclocked - though it will do 4.7 all cores and 115mv undervolted and run even cooler, id rather more stable for everyday life) ) and runs about 30c cooler than stock on Prime 95 runs (57c versus the high 80's/90's of stock)…one of the coolest running i8 8700K's in existence (the guy who delidded it had done hundreds said it was the coolest he'd ever seen one run). Every delidded CPU performs differently…15-20c is ballpark, mines just above average, won the silicon lottery…

I actually only turned on my desktop 4 times, after the delidding, until recently because i live in a building owned by a friend and got a bit christian about power usage while our inverter was getting replaced (long replacement time due to post COVID supply chain issues)

Reason (i have a smart plug with monitoring - never buy one if you want to be oblivious):

        Laptop and Samsung 32" G7: 80watts
Desktop (without monitor on): 600 watts

Thankfully new solar invertor was replaced last month, and im now mostly back on my beast….

Read online that you can take the battery out and have it run on AC mains power. If you're comfortable only using it when you have a powerpoint accessible this can be an option

  • I never received a type c charger as listed. anyone else have the same issue?

    • +1

Yeah, I had the same - I contacted them and they've sent out out to me. Mistakes happen…

      • @psmedley @barseeker
Which one did you buy, does it have thunderbolt?

        • +1

I got the DELL Latitude 7390 2-in-1 i5-8350U 16GB RAM 512GB SSD Win 11 Pro i think it has thunderbolt since the 2 type c ports have the icon and in the bios it has a THunderbolt adapter configuration heading. Though i installed Hwinfo64 couldn't find it under the bus heading. lap top speakers are crackly probably turned up too much by previous owner. fan a bit noisy when it kicks in, ill need to keep it elevated a bit on the desk so vents arent blocked. bios battery settings says excellent. is there any software that tests battery life you can recommend? overall its a good laptop and specs are ok. you may find a similar model at ACT cheaper with the current 22% off ebay code.

          • @barseeker: thanks. i was thinking to go one up

but weird the cpu is higher but model number is lower than yours.. 7200 vs 7390

            • @CyberMurning: true weird. i also https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/186044765446 which is 12.5" screen but comes down to $272 with ebay plus but its now out of stock.

              • @barseeker: Description say 13.3" lol typical…. very little attention on doing business….

                • @CyberMurning: yes the ACT one listed says 12.5" but it is probably a mistake. it has better spec's but smaller 256GB SSD. Oh well ill soon find out once it arrives next week then i can compare both.

                  • +1

@barseeker: You bought two? Wow… just for fun?
I found the dell number meaning.
                    1st digit is model
                    2nd is screen size
                    So 72xx means 12"
                    73xx means 13.3"

  • luckily i had an old charger. i asked for a credit and they agreed.
