Just bought one from ebay for $20 a couple of days ago to schedule a coffee machine’s preheat. Good plug.

    • +1

That’s exactly what I do as well, the machine is all warmed up and ready to go each morning.

I actually had Kasa plugs before but was annoyed about needing two apps to control both versions of TP-Link devices, so I swapped over to Tapo plugs instead to match the bulbs I also have. Looks like the same hardware, just different code to control it. However, a recent update of the Tapo iOS app has just added support for Kasa devices; it looks like TP-Link has seen common sense and is finally combining the two.

  • +1

    Sigh, I have a kasa one…

    • +7

The recent Tapo app update now supports Kasa devices too!
Version 3.0.17 on iOS is what I have and it shows both plugs in the one app finally!

      • +1

Looks like it's only available on iOS for now? Don't see it on Android app v2.18.102 :(

        • Beta version 3 is avalible for Android

      • +1

But all the Kasa plugs would need to be set up again in the Tapo app instead of the current Kasa app, yeah?

        • +2

If you use the same TP link login it imports the devices. It has kept the schedules I had set up in Kasa. I haven’t done anything more advanced than the schedules.

I did get a warning that I would need to re-do the third party services thing so you can use it with google assistant, Alexa, etc.

    • What's the difference? I also have the Kasa one (H110)

      • No idea, I assumed I would need yet another app/account; I already have six different apps for various smart devices (Grid Connect, Mirabella Genio, Smart Life, Kasa, Xiaomi, Wyze), didn't want a seventh if I could help it…but some people commenting here you don't need to…🤷🏻‍♂️

        I missed out anyway 😂

        • +1

home assistant. Grid and mirabella i thought are tuya?
But all can be unified under google or alexa

          • @Whiplash: Yes, but you need the apps to look at the energy monitoring or extra features.

I don't have experience with Home Assistant.

  • +2

These work well with Home Assistant.

    • +2

Can confirm, the P110 is superb, and a good replacement for the Kasa KP115 which is no longer being sold in Australia.

    • But only through the tapo app which requires registration, right?

    • Can it be used without cloud connection?

  • +3

    thanks. bought two
i now have 10 smart switches in total!

    • What do you use them for? I'm thinking of using one for the alfresco decoration lights (the switch is in the corner of the alfresco)

      • +1

        1x for work laptop
        1x for other laptop
        1x for nas
        1x for nas backup disk
        2x for kids oil heaters
        2x for kids diffusers

the two new will replace the kids oil heaters, and the outgoing ones will go to another computer and another oilheater

        • Do these have the same peak power limit as the old hs110 (16amp burst)?

        • Thank you. Really helpful :)

          • @mkowarkski: The power usage chart looks great. it'll help me determine if the two oil heaters the kids use consume different power when warming the rooms.

maybe i can save some energy by buying a second hand different heaters

            • @FoxJump: Yes, good idea.
I also have Power Pal, which helps me monitor Electricity usage in the whole house.

    • -1

I bought 30 of these when they were on sale for EOFY lol 🤦‍♂️. 10 is a much more reasonable number.

  • Do these have surge protection on them?

    • No. They have "overcurrent" and "overheating" protection, but no surge protection.

      • pardon my ignorance. What does that mean? Would it protect my tv incase a surge hits due to lightening? Don't care if the plug burns out as long as it can protect the connected device.

        • +2

Nothing will stop a lightening strike

          • +3

@Gunther: what about unplugging it ;)

          • +1

@Gunther: We put surge protectors in our switchboard from the street to protect whole house. You put a heavy duty and a fine surge breaker in the switchboard but an electrician has to do it. Cost us $300 or so all up but is worth it with the aircons and electrical items in home

Apply the 10% off coupon to bring the current price down from $19 to $17.10

Which coupon? I cannot see that

  • +3

Back in stock, but the 10% off coupon is gone. $19 now.

    • Still seems like a decent price. Picked one to see. So far I don't have good experience with smart plugs of most brands (except for sonoff)

  • +1

Anyone know if the energy monitoring can be used to trigger an automated function? E.g. if you are charging something and its finished could the plug turn off

    • if you add it to homeassistant should be pretty easy to do

    • You can't do that using the Tapo app

    • You can only do that via Home Assistant. It’s a massive ecosystem of its own, but well worth it.

    • I do this myself, if you have an iOS device you can make a script in the automations app - you need to install the tapo app first as it doesn't support homekit, although im hopefully going to get homebridge up and running soon

  • I am unavailable to order more than 5 ? Is there a limit ?

    • Maybe it is unable!

    • I bought three but had to place three orders to get the discount as the discount only applied once per order.

  • How are these at only taking up the 1 plug side so you can use 2 next to each other?

    • -1

Good question I need to put it on a double gang gpo outlet and need to also know if it will impede the other power socket ?

      • +2

They are not that wide, I can plug two in one socket

  • FYI, "used" ones are still available for $15. I bought 2 and they were brand new. Likely just returns.

  • Apart from being smaller, these Tapo plugs are a downgrade from Kasa. If you set up a routine to make sure all 4 devices in a room are turned off and something is not turned on, you have to hear “X is already turned off” however many times.

    • It's worked fairly solid for me. I got one P110 and 4 P100s. I use these everyday.

      • They don’t have any issues apart from Google Home being more annoying in certain situations/routines. For the basics they are fine. Just a warning to those considering going from Kasa to Tapo as a slight downgrade in reality.

        • I have been using Tapo routines and they have been solid so far. Fingers crossed for the future, they have never missed a beat.

  • Are these any good for energy monitoring? Don’t really need the smart home aspect, but would love to accurately measure the consumption from certain appliances and setups eg. gaming PC/heaters.

    • +2

Assuming nothing has changed since Kasa and the HS110, they'll only show current usage and cumulative usage for the day, last 7 and last 30 days.

The Meross equivalent is cheaper on Amazon atm and does granular historical use in a graph and also calculates cost for you.

You may not be able to use either with a heater though. They both have a maximum supported power draw. 2000W on the TP-Link and 1800W on the Meross IIRC

      • Who uses their heater on max?!

        • I use old Kasa to turn off charging a Tesla either after less than 1000 watts of solar production for more than 5 minutes or at 4 PM when demand tarrif begins. I use Home Assistant for this automation, not Kasa app. Works great. Draws around 2550 watts when charging from a standard plug outlet using mobile charger.

      • Old kasa hs110's had 3600w peak limit. Great with heaters.

    • they're amazing
      better than kasa

      you get a graph!

  • These work great. I have one in the shed and also connected to my pool pump (the pool pump timer broke, and i just set the schedule on the app) - was a much cheaper fix.

  • Are these Tuya Compatible? I'm guessing not but would be nice if they were.

    • +1

This is tuya compatible, and cheaper
      https://www.bigw.com.au/product/crest-smart-single-adaptor-p…

I had quite a few Kogan tuya ones, and they just randomly die. Been replacing with the crest ones and they have been ok so far.

      • Crest seem better at 2400w max

        • I purchased 2 x of these 2 months back. They run 24x7. Less than 100 watts. One literally popped and died last week. No smokes or fire though.

          • @MKBHD: I've heard this happening with a lot of smart plugs out there. I don't know if we have some weird thing happening in Aus that makes it keep happening or what, but there's forums fill of people having various sorts of smart plus (Kogan, Crest, t link, etc) and a lot die within a year or two with a faulty but. Makes me not want to get a smart plug just in case, since knowing my luck it'll probably kill the device it's plugged into

            • @Opaquer: In my case it was a UPS plugged in to it so I guess it had enough protections so it survived

              • @MKBHD: That's pretty lucky then - for me it would be things like lamps and phones and whatnot so I don't know if I want to risk it

  • Can the Tapo app be used without a subscription/registration like the older kasa app?

    • It doesnt need a subscription. You need to register an account, I paid nothing

  • +1

Never seen any negative comments on these, but i had one fail on me, perhaps using it incorrectly, although regardless i am quite hesitant to use these now.
I had an extension cord running into it going to a washing machine and dryer during a reno and after a fair period of time, perhaps a few months i noticed the extension cord plug and the smart socket became "soldered" together. After prying them appart both were melted/damaged.
Just mentioning to show what can happen.

    • washing machine and dryer

As in you put two heavy draw appliances into a single plug?? With a double adapter or something?

      • Yeah i had them plugged into a 4 way then an extension cord into the smart plug, (was temporary during a reno) so yeah prob not ideal, but still dont expect it to short out/melt.

        • +1

If the 4 way was a power board it should have been fused for a 10a draw - if that's the case then you shouldn't have been able to pull enough to weld the plug and the extension lead unless the socket or prongs was made of the finest Chinesium. :D

          • @Twilight: Unsure about any of that, the extension cord was of medium/heavy duty from bunnings, but probably close to 20 years old. I have now replaced it with an extra eavy duty lead.

  • damn it i just bought one like a week ago from jbhifi.
