Japan Travel - Luggage Question - Many Hotels

Hi all,

What are my options when it comes to leaving luggage somewhere safe when I go explore Japan?
Can I for example check out at 10am and leave my luggage there until say 3pm to come back and get them before checking into my next hotel?
Are hotels in Japan all ok with that? or would I need to leave luggage elsewhere like a locker?

Don't want to be carrying luggage everywhere I go.

Thanks!

Japanese hotels are great when it comes to taking care of you, I never had a problem storing luggage, but also often used luggage forwarding services rather than lugging it from hotel to hotel.

    • awesome to hear!

what were the forwarding luggage services called? I might check those out. & do they ever lose your luggage?

      Thanks!

The major luggage delivery companies (Takuhaibin) are Yamoto and Sagawa - hotels will help you sort it out and, with typical Japanese efficiency they never lose your luggage (statistically very small chance)
It can take over 24 hours, so I would keep a change of clothes and some toiletries in a day bag, but usually the next morning your luggage is in the lobby.

Konbini's (convenience stores) also function as agents where you can pick up/drop off luggage, but it is generally easier to have hotel staff arrange it for you.

        • We booked an Airbnb near Shin Osaka and they have said they can't accept luggage. There are a few conbinis near by. How do I sort it out with Conbini? I am planning to use Yamato from Narita to Shin-Osaka.

@mpadre: The problem here is that the forms are all in Japanese - there are a few online DIY guides to filling them out, or use google translate, but I found the easiest way was to get the forms, have hotel fill them out for me and then present the form with my luggage and pay whatever fee they calculated.

Actually, jut found Yamoto now have a step-by-step on how to fill out the waybills for various destinations.

Mostly ok we did find some hostels that didnt allow it due to space. major JR rail stations have day lockers. Tokyo station on weekend you may find they are full.

    • The station lockers are great. As long as you can remember how to get back to them 😂 And yes, if it's available and in the size you need

  • most train stations have luggage storage lockers, also many hotels around major train stations may have their own outside luggage storage lockers.

Why not just ask the question of the hotel(s) you hotel you are staying at? Pretty logical I would have thought?
(ps) don't be so lazy and do a bit of research yourself.

  • Storage lockers at train stations are common. Luggage forwarding services are amazing with a bit of planning. Luggage free travel.
