Greatest games ever? Would have to be up there….

    • HL1 was one of the most amazing games back in my early days.

      • Still is great if you can get over the graphics, the gunplay and gameplay is a blast to this day

Half life on sale = half life 3 confirmed

    • +6

      Half Life 1 + 2

      = Half Life 3

    Alyx is $29.90

    • +4

Alyx is still arguably the best VR game available, and Portal 2 is still the best sci fi comedy action puzzle game.

Portal 1 and Half life 2 (incl episodes) still hold up in 2023 too. Some would insist HL1 and a few others are still worth playing too.

      • +2

how can it be arguable? none are even remotely close to the quality

      • +1

Half life 2 (incl episodes) still hold up in 2023 too

The VR mods are very good as well. Not quite Alyx level, but close (and you get to use the crowbar unlike Alyx).

    • +1

66% off, for those (like me) who were wondering.

  • +4

Thanks! Added the complete bundle to my steam deck pile of shame…

    • +1

Forget everything else and start HL1

  • +2

Anyone actually played HL1 recently? How does it hold up after all these years?

    • +1

I'm playing it in VR right now and loving it.

      • Nice, that's next on my list in VR. In the middle of Doom 3 atm

    • +1

Surprisingly well. Visuals are obviously dated, but what made it so good was the level design and the way everything tied together.

    • +11

I'd suggest playing Black Mesa which is a remake of HL1 using the Source engine and it's very good.

    • +2

Better than most (eg old Dooms, Quakes, System Shocks, Deus Ex, etc etc).

The final stages are undercooked, they were trying to introduce some variety and lost focus towards the end. Seems to happen with a lot of otherwise very good games.

      • Deus ex is good again if you are playing revision.

      • (eg old Dooms, Quakes, System Shocks, Deus Ex, etc etc).

IMO all these games hold up well, especially Doom. A good game is a good game, whether it's new or old

    • Played it through on period correct-ish hardware a few months ago (AMD K6-2, 3dfx voodoo 2), still slaps!

    • tried Brutal Half-Life ?
Makes the guns impactful, add gore, about 3hrs playtime, probably 4hrs for a blind run.

      GFX still looks alright

      • +1

Wow, I loved playing Brutal Doom in VR, I can't believe I didn't think to see if there was a Brutal mod for Half Life! I've got it queued up to play in VR, but now have to see how to get this mod working too!

Don't forget Black Mesa great for those looking to relive HL1 with an updated engine…

    • +2

Agreed, although if anyone hasn't played HL1 I'd suggest playing the original first

    • Im going to wait until Black Mesa is 75% off again and pick it up then - never finished HL1 when it came out.

      • +1

Black Mesa is 80% off right now

        • +2

No no, it has to be 75%. No more, no less.

Be ware that Steam is stopping the service for Windows 7 so I've no idea how that will work.

Valve complete bundle is where it's at if you don't already own any of the games. 90% off $213.29 down to $21.52 and it also includes both Left 4 Dead and Portal games. That's a huge discount for their entire game library.

    https://store.steampowered.com/bundle/232/Valve_Complete_Pac…

However pity it isn't at 96% off like it was a few months ago.

Half-life 1 RT mod on GitHub if anyone is interested in that.

    https://github.com/sultim-t/xash-rt/releases/tag/1.0.5a

    • Thanks a lot, RTX works perfectly. I saw reflections in the mirror too :D is there any high quality texture pack ?

  • +2

A way to play half-life is actually to play opposing force first, then blue shift, followed by Half-life, it makes it more mysterious and interesting, then you go straight onto Half-life 2. It means you spend the first two games wondering why it happened or what's going on. Wish I did first play through like this.

  • +1

Thanks Op. Cheap way to get HL2 (on its own for $1.45 or as part of the complete bundle) in preparation for the upcoming free RTX mod. Although, based on the Portal RTX experience, a beefy system will be required.

  • Shows as $6.03 AUD for me, am I missing a code or were original prices in USD?
