if the original price is 3.5k, too bad for the screen

  • +3

Would have been all over this if it had a half decent screen. Still good for the price.

    • What's the issue with the screen? Resolution or nits?

      • +4

Common consensus is that 300 nits is quite dim, and 45%NTSC means poor colour range - things look washed out and dull.

      • Yes. Both.

    • They even have a touchscreen. That would be what I've been looking for, except yuck! Will continue to wait.

  • No recess!

  • Hmm do I get this or the T14s. I'm torn..

    • +2

      Pros I see:

      T14s - Lighter, 10% more battery capacity, 2x USB 4 ports (P14s has 1x USB 3.2G2 + 1x USB 4), better build quality.

P14s - Ethernet port, 32GB RAM option, slightly cheaper, possibly slightly better performance under load. Back with Gen 1 and 2, the T14 (same as P14s) used to perform 5-10% better than the T14s under sustained load. Not sure if it's true anymore.

I'd take the T14s, but that's because I had an X1 Nano Gen 1 before and it made me fell in love with lightweight laptops, even if it's only a 0.12 kg difference lol. Plus, I don't use Ethernet at home and 16GB is enough for most people.

What is Lenovo doing? They have always offered T14 with 32GB RAM. Has been waiting for the Gen 4s to come out to replace a Gen 2, but no way would I get one limited to 16GB. I was actually hoping they would be offering up to 64GB this year 😞

        • I noticed the latest T14 also has a 39Wh vs 52.5Wh on the P14s. The P14s used to be the same as a T14, but with certified drivers for 'professionals'. Claimed to have better stability and stuff.

          Heck, they had 1x SO-DIMM slot on both T14 and P14s to make it 48GB (16GB soldered + 32GB SO-DIMM)! Darn.

    • Where is the post for t14?

      • ah there's no post. I was just referring to T14s with sort of similar specs to this P14s

  • How bad is the screen as these are the specs I want.

    • Very bad. No idea why they put this screen with this spec of laptop. Last time I said this everyone said it's because people use laptops plugged into monitors. Which I really don't understand… buy a better desktop for the money 🀷

      • This is targeted as a business laptop and everyone's laptops are always plugged in. Some people use the laptop screen as a third screen and this would be okay for it. Also the battery is too small. Definitely not good enough screen and battery as a consumer laptop. Ended up getting the Yoga 7 with OLED screen. Came to about $1,140 with cashback.

        • Same laptop I bought ☺️

          • @bejahi: Nice, I was also looking at Macbooks and for the price and specs, the Yoga is a steal. 680M can play a lot of games and can easily upgrade in a few years time and I'm still ahead.

        • Link for your Yoga 7 with OLED? I'm after something mac air like but don't like macs

          • +1

@Mdjz76: You can upgrade the SSD and screen when you build it. The CPU is a rebadged 6800u https://www.lenovo.com/au/en/p/laptops/yoga/yoga-2-in-1-series/yoga-7-gen-8-(14-inch-amd)/82ymcto1wwau4

            • @Jacko1235: Thanks mate looks like a good deal

              • +1

@Mdjz76: Great price for what you're getting. I'd wait until their's a cashback deal on Lenovo. Usually happens every couple of weeks. I scored this with a 16% cashback.

                • @Jacko1235: Thanks I'm in no rush I'll wait. I'm actually tempted to wait until black Friday sales?

                  • @Mdjz76: This is a pretty low price for this model so I don't think it'll get much cheaper for Black Friday. You may get some 7840U models becoming available which is what I'd hold out for.

  • no idea why base freq is lower than 7840hs and no thinkpads with 7840hs

now I’m stuck on a cringey legion laptop ama

  • 300 nits ewww

  • Nice to see a non gaming laptop with a Zen 4 chips. Now can we please get a Zen 4 in the Ideapad Pro?

It is insanity to spend more than $250-300 for any tech item comes with 2-3 years half-life. e.g. phone, computer.

    • Huh? So sane people would only buy entry level Chromebooks or refurbs?
And the 50% of people that use iPhones are insane?
Many people use their laptops for 5-10 years. I vaguely recall a thread here where some were using 15 year old tech as their daily laptops/desktops.

      • I have 3 ThinkPads all over 10 years old and I use all windows 11 pro, never paid more than $250 for each. For second question calling them insane would be a compliment, and would be an insult for non iphone non samsonite users.

        • One of the major changes with Windows 10 to 11 was moving some security features to virtualization rather than emulation, which required some changes (including TPM 2.0) so even if you have force installed Windows 11 on pre-8th gen intel processors (which are mid 2017 models) your devices will be vulnerable - and you won't be able to get regular updates.

Not that there's anything wrong with old hardware - I'd probably just choose to run Linux on them rather than Windows.

          • @SecondSkoll: clean install of windows 11. You have no idea about it. You folks are coming here talking with ideas w/o knowledge.

            • @[Deactivated]: I work in IT where the transition to Win 11 and the hardware requirements to fully support it were fairly problematic - so I like to think I do know what I'm talking about…

You can't actually upgrade Windows 10 to Windows 11 without TPM 2.0. However, if you have at least TPM 1.2, you can do a clean install and it won't enforce that. It is not recommended, but it will let you install that way anyway and just cannot guarantee all features will work properly.

There are significant security features that are not supported without TPM 2.0. I may be wrong about the updates, that was the case initially but I haven't personally checked in some time.

As I said, there's nothing wrong with old hardware, but I wouldn't choose to run windows 11 on pre-8th gen intel or pre ryzen 2000 chips.

              • -5

@SecondSkoll: All updates etc working full w/o problem. No guess and make assumption w/o knowledge. Good luck with your presumption and guessing mate then. I will ignore your any possible response. Don't waste my time. full stop.

    • I'm guessing you're not an Apple fan then πŸ˜‰

      • Thats correct. Haters gonna hate.

Boys, ever dreamt of playing the latest games released in 4k @ 144hz?

Well continue dreaming because with a $300 PC, the only game you'll be playing at that spec is Minesweeper and solitaire.

      • -3

        I also hate playing games.

        • Ah shit, just noticed your name. Why do I bother smh

          • @ilikeblue: think turniphead has what it takes to win

          • @ilikeblue: shit, idontlikeblue, either

  • how to claim the rewards for spending 1500+?? or does it reside in your account for you to use next time?

    • It sits in your rewards account. I think it has 3 month validity…

  • Does anyone know if things bought from an Edu store affects tax claims?

    • It shouldn't, the price is the price if it's on your name and you use it for work then it shouldn't matter.

  • 45%NTSC yuck

  • The screen quality is negligible for my [and most] business use. I have an older p14 and 95% of the time it's plugged in. I still need it as a laptop as I move around the office, or between home and office.

    • Don't know why this is getting negged when this is the truth for who Lenovo is targeting this at.

      • yes agree. now only hardcore gamers buy desktop, the rest will prefer laptop + external monitor at home with plan of bring the laptop when travelling but the reality most of time we end up think nah, i am fine with mobile phone, laptop stay at home

  • I am tempted as I need to replace my old desktop at home.

Anyone can comment on fan noise for general use (web browsing etc)?

I have Thinkpad L13 Yoga Gen 3 at work and it is noisy just to perform basic MS Office stuffs and it gets extremely noisy when it has to deal with massive amount of data

    Thanks!

    • Sorry, can't speak for the laptop in question, but I have a fairly new Lenovo IdeaPad 5 Pro and only on hot days with aircon off do I hear the fans during regular use. mine is a Ryzen 7 5800H (3.2Ghz, 8 Core, 16 Logical)

  • Why it cant output 144hz 4k?
