Just had this pop up, Seems like JB are leaving the e-bike market and they've put all their bikes on clearance - about $1000 off for most of them, but this one is the biggest saving that still has stock available today.

As someone who bought a bike for 2k a month ago this stings a bit, but hopefully someone else can get a bargain out of this

    Great price. If you can make a mod to be able make you kid sit backside, it will be a great EV to drop kid at school daily.

    34kg, I guess that's why it needs such big tyres :)
    No more cargo capacity than a regular bike. (small handlebar tray, and room for 2 panniers)
    Where are you going to put 80kg of cargo?

      Looks like the motor has a max output of 500W to haul that extra weight so it might not be classified as a bicycle in VIC https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/safety-and-road-rules/cyclis…

        That is normal for a 250W nominal power. The rules are vague as usual. Helps keep lawyers rich.

        But I see it does have a very big battery, 48Vx 14Ah. You are getting a lot of parts for the money.

    Great specs for the price. Except for the weight. 34kg is insane and instantly makes this a no-go.

    Furthermore, this is the least practical "cargo" bike I could think of. It just doesn't work unfortunately.

      Yeah the 34kg frame plus 50Nm motor is a real winner, you'd almost be better off just getting a light normal bike for all the acceleration this would give.
      Not sure how they managed to get 34kg either, I assumed steel frame but nope it's aluminum. It's a chungus of a battery but still… that's hefty.

      I'd guess that is the amount of charge cycles it can do before it's below 80% health. Or something to that effect.

    Hate to break it to you but most of the ebikes from JB Hifi were unavailable since this morning. They also won't sell you the displays instore as they are owned by the company and not JB Hifi.
    A few of the Monster ebikes might still be available.

        I bought one last December. It only last 40KM per full charge on level 3 assistance and I normally have to charge every 3 days with 10KM rides per day. Apart from that, it is a really good bike. I was hit by a car's back door this year and got a finger fracture, the bike got no damage.

      Don't think it's worthwhile for electric bikes.

      You want lower weight, but it causes trade-offs, and the benefit you get from an electric bike isn't as great as mass and braking isn't required as much.

      Engwe engine pro is one of the cheapest I know that has it - $2k

      It doesn't work the way it does with ev cars. You basicay need to engine break by going faster than the PAS level is programmed to, it's not advanced enough to regen on command when using brakes.

      Batteries probably won't like it either considering they all have low input currents of around 4a at 48V (192W). Funnily enough I've seen the engine pro regen at 500w in a review.

    The price is good for what you get … but it's not a great bike (and that's disregarding the appearance).

    After trying a heavy electric scooter from neuron. No thanks. It was so hard to push in a no ride zone. Need carbon fiber and aluminium body and the next generation lightest battery. Then maybe I consider an ebike or escooter.

    Was looking at an engwe ep-2 for around $1200. But those $400 ones with a rack are tempting, add in a 1500w front hub motor and 48v LG battery for around $900 and you'll have a pretty bonkers bike.

      Which exceeds the 250w motor regulation? Not nit picking as I'd like to get an electric bike it saddens me to see all these bikes with motors that exceed 250w. I know in reality nothing would happen but still…

        500w here in NSW. Poorly written and enforced rule so you do roll the dice. Considering I see alot of uber riders in the city with 750w bikes plus all the rental scooters littered around (completely illegal here).

        Until cops are running around with dynos or power meters it's really easy to skirt around the laws.
        - Slap on a 250w sticker on the motor(s)
        - get a 250w advertised motor but a beefy controller that would push it well past 1000w
        - some controllers/screens can easily turn on/off the speed limiter

          I am pretty sure the regulation is 250w in NSW and must be pedal assist. this bike is neither.

          I have been riding my 1000w and 1500w ebikes for years now and never caught, for the reasons you've listed.

          I did uber eats deliveries a bit during lockdown and saw on the news and uber eats facebook group that police were busting food delivery riders on George street in sydney city, right along the light rail not too far from central. I think the main thing they get them for is having a throttle and no pedal assist

          I just reread the policy, they must have uped it to 500, it was definitely 250 when I did my uber eats online course (I was bored in lockdown don't judge)

          pedal assist still mandatory and this has a throttle

      Just got it delivered yesterday. For $1200 (plus $23 for delivery), I think its a pretty good deal, but there's no throttle, and no back pannier rack. Range is also pretty limited but good for those sub 10km rides. Very comfy.

        got mine delivered saturday also had a ride around for hour or so, was wondering how to add throttle to it, the weight is 35kg which is more than jb hi web site page which says around 25kg ..cool looking but i think the battery isn’t going to last more than 10klm

    Based on the video on the JB Hi-Fi site, this bike would not be legal to use in Australia. Australia requires electric bikes to be pedal assist. The electric motor cannot be used to power by bicycle by itself. Yet the video (https://youtu.be/ItTgwkdOc0A) shows it going up-hill several times without any pedalling.

      Yes, it operates in both ways, assistance and as a motor bike, so isn't legal here.

      Like JB's other e-bike, the Smacircle, only legal to operate on a private property because they aren't e-bikes or any other permitted road vehicle.

      it is legal (SA laws) because the throttle only works up to 6km/h stock and pedal assist works up to 25km/k stock. Unlocked it will go to 35km/h with throttle.

      i’m surprised people aren’t stealing lime and other electric bikes and scooters and stripping for parts. the tool to undo the screws on scooter is long 5 lobe security which you can get off aliexpress, and new battery balancing circuits are readily available so can remove the protection circuit they add. cargo bikes are probably less electronic protection than lime scooters and bikes which have gps.

          was hoping to give ideas that these things need more security, i chain my push bike to posts or bike racks when not used and if stripped is worth less in parts than an e-bike. do e-bikes have gps , besides lime, that if stolen you have chance to recover ?

    I’ve owned this for about a year - I’ve been wanting to get a Riese and Muller or Tern cargo bike to haul my kids about town but simply can’t justify the prices of these. So I settled on this as a way to test the waters and to see if my kids actually liked riding on one of them, which they do! For the price it’s incredible value for money. It’s certainly not refined but it does the job more than competently. The pedal assist is cadence based rather than torque, so it kicks in after a few spins of the pedal in a fairly linear manner. I’ve found the weight to be a non-issue as the motor is more than powerful enough to proper myself and my 4 year-old on a child seat, and even with my 2nd year old riding along in a trailer hitched to the back. They’d rather ride on this than the car to go the playground, and allows us to go out and explore, calling out the things they spot along the way. It’s great fun.

        It does - factory settings limits this to 4-5kmh which is designed to help you out from a standstill, particularly useful if you’re carrying a bit of weight, or as a walk-assist mode if you’re pushing the bike (crossing the road at traffic lights for example). The real fun comes in when you unlock the software which removes the speed limit of the throttle and allows the bike to travel at 35-40kmh. So I hear 😅

      Riding with the kids on a cargo bike is the ducks nuts, so fun. I told my kid to ride with mum in the car this morning and she cried. Eventually ended up taking her in the bike instead.

      Wish to high hell Id been able to get one of these. Ive been using my mamachari bike this whole time and some SOB stole it from the train station. I have pissed and moaned about the high prices before:-

    Seems like a big issue that these bikes are being sold to people with no idea they don’t meet legal requirements for public usage.

    If you’re in a road accident, through no fault of your own, how much of a factor is having a non-compliant e-vehicle going to have on the outcome?

      Depends on the aspect i.e. injuries, fines, liability. It will remove protections and increase blame towards yourself though, almost certainly increasing costs beyond any 'savings' from having a non-compliant vehicle.

      The fact you bought it from an Australian shop won't change that i.e. the driver/user is still responsible for complying with the law.
