Overseas ATM Ate My Debit Card

Hi, so I was busy counting cash and didn't take my ATM card within the 5 seconds or so. How can I get it back? This is in at ATM in Hong Kong part of a branch.

Thanks OP for the Public Service Announcement, I never knew this happens.
I've only seen receipts been taken.

  • Speak to the branch or call the number on the ATM. Ask them…

  • Enter on the keypad:

That happened to me at night in China a few years ago. I went into the local branch the next day and they said that it'll take two weeks (that didn't help). I'm glad I also brought a bunch of cash with me (but it was back in HK) and not actually on me.

    • take two weeks
      Useless

    • How can it take 2 weeks for a staff member to open the ATM and fish your card out?

I would not have a clue. I assumed that the usual staff dont have access to ATMs and probably service by contractors. Either way, I couldn't really argue with them in mandarin!

        • I lost a card at a Bendigo bank. The staff had access to the retained cards and gave it back to me. There were a few others in there, doubt they could touch the cash side of things.

@JIMB0: Australia and China probably do things differently… haha

I also noticed that in Asia, the money comes out first, followed by the card. Over here in Australia, it seems to be the opposite - the card comes out first, followed by the cash.

            • @bobbified: Seven Bank ATMs in Japan provide the cash after the card is returned IIRC

      • Most bank staff dont have access to the atm. In a lot of places its contracted out.

I had that happen to me in Leipzig, I just went in the next day and asked… gave over my passport as proof of my identity and got it back.
Maybe go to the nearest branch and ask?

    bitcoin solves this

Bitcoin has its uses, but as an everyday medium of exchange, it is not.
Settlement between 10-60 minutes (or longer) depending on how many confirmations you/they require.
      Prohibitive fees for smaller transactions.
      Limited to non-existent merchant adoption.
      The list goes on…
I like Bitcoin, but it is not a panacea for all.

WHY WOULD THIS FEATURE EVEN HAPPEN?

    • +6

I would imagine to minimise the opportunity for the next person to grab the card - in case the cardholder has genuinely forgotten and left.

if you didn't take the money in time , it will also eat them back in.

Hi. So sorry to hear that hopefully you get it back asap. Good advice I was given long time ago was always have a 2nd card.

WISE card recommended. You can pop any amount on it and then turn off all ways to use it in app. Brilliant.

Then because you have an aud bank account with BSB/ account number (and you’ll get a payid that you use to transfer from your bank account (s) or any family/friend using BSB/Acct and bingo you’re flush again.
Best of luck. Please let us know how you go?
