Skoda Cars - How are they?

Hi Guys,

Still deciding on the car and came across Skoda FABIA, Skoda Karoq, and Skoda KAMIQ.

What are your thoughts on SKODA's in general?

Any suggestions will be highly appreciated.

Cheers.

It’s a VW with a different suit. Make of that what you will.

    • Thank you for your reply.

Do you own one or do someone you know own one?

What is the life span of these cars any idea?

    • +2

Skodas were originally Czechoslovakian. VW tried to upgrade them, but the jokes persisted.
VW basically shut them down in the end, and just kept the name alive.

      1. Why do skodas have heated rear windscreens?
To keep your hands warm while your pushing it.

      2. Have you got a wing mirror for a skoda?
Okay, seems like a fair swap

        That would be totally incorrect.
Skoda is still made in Czechia (and India, China, Ukraine & Slovakia - they are extracting themselves from Russia right now) and is a major supplier to VW products world wide. Production is ~750,000 units a year which is down from a pre-covid peak of 1.25 million.

        • +1

Skoda is still made in Czechia

VW makes cars in Czechia, and puts the Skoda brand on them.
But there was a clean break made from the old Skoda, that was the butt of jokes. They have nothing in common except the name and place. I could slap a Skoda badge on my Czech-made Hyundai, and it would have just as much in common with the old Skodas.
          This is a good thing!

          • @bargaino:

This logic applies to all cars if you compare them to cars made 30 years ago.

    • Cheers for the reply.

Parts are the same for an Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda……guess it depends how much badge appeal tax you feel you need to pay.

      • +10

Yeah. Stick to the one you already ordered

Jesus, you make buying a car sound way more complicated than it should be. Are you like this with everything and running to the internet for every single little decision you make?

        • Thanks for your reply.

        • -3

Only with the big ticket value items.

          • +7

@digitalfarmer: Well why did you order the Cerato then? Dunno about you, but I have a shortlist that I whittle down to one or two. Not order a car, then add another dozen cars (which in your case is not an exaggeration but fact) to the shortlist.

Nor do I resort to asking OzBargain every single time I find a new car. Use your many existing threads. The internet exists; read and watch reviews.

            • -2

@kerfuffle: I ordered the Cerato after doing my research. Cerato is a good car.

Now the wait time has exceeded my expectations, so looking for another option.

              • +5

@digitalfarmer: Clearly you didn't do your research because here you are asking about anything from EVs to European cars to Japanese compact SUVs. Did you check whether the wait times for the hundred cars you're asking about are within your expectations?

                • -2

@kerfuffle: This is part of my research process.

                  • +7

@digitalfarmer: By crowdsourcing opinions from random people on the internet rather than reading/watching reviews and test driving? Sounds like laziness rather than research.

                    • @kerfuffle: (OP. Coming to a front facing govt dept near you)

                    • -1

                      @kerfuffle: Yes, I am lazy.

                      • +2

@digitalfarmer: If you’re that lazy just pick a damn car and be done with it. Who cares what everyone else thinks.

Pretty sure it’s been said before. Go and pick a car YOU like to drive and look at.

                • +1

@kerfuffle: Car dealers are not very transparent about the wait time.

I was told 3 months to wait on the Cerator by the dealer

              • +4

@digitalfarmer: But now you're looking at other cars with unknown wait times?

    • +3

Didn’t check the user name. Should have done so. Yes, but the Kia you ordered OP.

    • Thanks for your reply.

Why is that? What are your thoughts on the brand?

      • +3

dont like euro cars on principle

        toyota or nothing for me

    • +2

      That's gold Jerry, gold!

      • +2

I had my shoulders jiving by the end of that ad.

    • +2

Love it! Looks like a Czech version of "Flight of the Conchords" :-) Who are they?

  • +19

JUST PICK A BLOODY CAR AND BUY IT FFS

  • Still deciding on the car and came across Skoda FABIA, Skoda Karoq, and Skoda KAMIQ.

Out of those three you should get KAMIQ.

  • +3

Not as good as a Cerato

    • Thanks for your reply.

      Why is that?

      • +9

        Thanks for your reply.
It's because the Cerato is made by Kia and all Skoda models are made by Skoda/VW.

  • +2

Save yourself the time of asking for every car model and have a look at carwow. He's based in the UK and I'm a fan of his straight to the point reviews.

    • +2

I like watching reviews on redriven.com
They don't have reviews on all models but the reviews they do have are pretty thorough and honest

      • Also a big fan of them. They're doing god's work with their second hand car cheat sheets

      • redriven.com

didnt like their content. seemed rather biased than factual.

  • Cheers for that.

  • +3

    I wouldn't get a Skoda.

  • +2

how many OzB threads get posted complaining about european car being a total PITA to own out of warranty (or even during)

skodas of yore mightve been OK as they wouldve used older VW AG engines/tech that had the bigger problems ironed out, but most would now be on current gen shared architectures and thus I would avoid. WA and NZ are now using em in their police car fleets, and they seem fine, then again they have the budgets to fix them, rotate them in/out of service, and bin them once done. one of them caught fire the other week. YMMV in this regard

as others have stated, stick to Korean or Japanese.

  • User name checks out. ( Cool euphemism BTW!)

Use that skill to give the glovebox a good work out on your test drive

  • +2

OP yet to get a drivers license. Next topic 'where should I go to get it,auto or manual) after every car make has been exhausted and he posts 37 threads on which colour and why, metallic or plain..

    • Yes, you are right.

      Thanks for your reply

  • I use to have one and loved it. They make great cars. Only sold it as I wanted an EV. Very much looking forward to the Enyak.

  • +3

Skoda/vw/Audi etc share a platforms and a lot of parts. What engine and transmission are you looking at?

Edit- just saw all your other posts, don't bother with answering that question.

      • Kia Cerato hands down. Best car in that category.

      • +1

I'd recommend a Cerato. Great cars.

        • That makes sense. Cheers.

      • -1

        non CTV.

        So no colour television?

  • +1

    I had a 2007 Mk2 Octavia 1.8tsi manual. It was a great car for 13 years / 208k km.
Mostly reliable but certainly no Camry. The interior basically melted at around 11 years. It couldn't take Australian heat/UV.

I didn't find parts or servicing costs any worse than previous vehicles.

I didn't buy another Skoda because the latest models seem to suffer from electrical issues due to the chip shortage. They have also become ridiculously expensive.
Mk3 Octy would be the latest I would buy.
You have to be very careful what engine & trans you get as some of them are very unreliable and break in an expensive manner.

  • They're a decent thing, the Kamiq came out on top in Chasing Cars small suv mega test.

    SKODA - Some Kind Of Dodgy Automobile;
a subsidiary of VW - Virtually Worthless
Or just get the expensive VW, Another Ugly Duetsche Invention

Just remember their track record with throwing customers under the bus for warranty and the whole diesel emmissions cheat devices. They weren't sorry they did it and contributed to the early deaths of some, they were only sorry they were caught.

I would never pay for VAG.

    Why not pick Subaru ?

    • +4

Shhh don't add any more options to OP's options

  • -1

Just got 0ne Subaru Crosstrek my2024 2 weeks ago.very impress with it. love it at first drive.

    • +2

Hybrid or normal? I hear the Hybrids are just a 9v battery

      • -1

My is normal. I don't like Hybrids .

  • +2

OP is a serial poster and really should learn to google and read reviews.

Also only buy a euro car if you're a masochist.

    SIMPLEZ

  • +5

Only about 370 brands to go…

    You can do it 💪👍

  • +1

Czech girls call them Kurva cars.
Actually from all out of the VW house they seem very well built.

  • +2

I had a friend that worked for Skoda and apparently they produced vehicles that were consistently of a higher standard than vw ( to vw’s embarassment). I would say they are really good vehicles but share so many vw components which can be good and bad. Resale is average as is their limited Dealer network. I would seriously consider them.

  • +2

I still have a 2009 Skoda Superb which has been pretty good but I would not buy another. Skoda do a great job designing their cars from the VW parts bin and screwing them together but the weak point is the reliance on VW parts. I had the interior door handle grips “melt” at about 8 years old, and the electrics give trouble because the wiring is so thin that it is prone to premature aging, and things going wrong. Always had heavy oil consumption from new, another VW common problem. Lovely car to drive, and I will keep it going until something major goes wrong like the DSG makes it uneconomical to repair. Probably a good buy if the price is right and you don’t intend to keep it past the 5 year warranty period.

  • I had a 2015 Skoda RS wagon for almost 7 years. Brilliant car, loved it. Nil issues in 7 years and 100k. Also hired one a couple of times in the UK. I really rate them.

  • +1

I've got a 2018 Octavia rs245. I absolutely love it. Great to drive. Handles like a car, not an SUV/truck. Very comfortable. Lots of nice convenient features. Huge boot for hauling a family and gear. Fits 3 child seats across the back seat. 80,000kms so far and no major issues. A couple of minor things sorted out under warranty without any problems (battery, coolant leak, subtle crack in interior door trim along LED strip light). Warranty extended to 7 years with purchase of fixed price servicing. Service costs have been fine. All car brands have problems. There's no way to guarantee a new car of any brand will never ever have any problems.

  • I have been driving a rented Skoda Kamiq for 20 days ex Sydney up the coast to Noosa and back via Toowoomba, Tamworth and Bathurst.

Being a European car the stalks are reversed. This isn't a problem for me because I drive in EU every year but it may be for you. My partner just said, "Yes it is a pain."

On a downgrade it holds onto a low gear so it acts as hill descent which is good. However, coming down from lookout in Tamworth today it wanted to stay in D2 and scream engine. I was able to use manual mode to get M3 which was much better.

Active cruise works. My Forester can't detect vehicle if it is going 60km/hr faster than other vehicle, eg stationary vehicle at lights. Kamiq seems to detect them but I wouldn't swear to it.

Speed limiter isn't. It is a speed alert. It runs away on downgrades and beeps at you. Pretty sure my Forester holds speed.

I have spun my front wheels several times on takeoff on wet or gravel roads. My Forester with AWD has never done this.

It is a pleasant car to drive.

Would I buy one - no.

    1. I love Forester AWD too much.

    2. My ignorant of the facts perception is that Euro car parts are expensive.

    3. John Cadoghan is scathing of after sales service of anything from VW (and many other brands). Watch his videos for more info.

    https://www.youtube.com/@AutoExpertJC

Whatever you buy, get it through a broker. I used the one recommended by JC. Pre-covid I got > 10% discount. A few months ago a friend bought a Forester and I got him > 5% discount via JC. Search my OB posts for more info about my experiences with broker.

  • I'd be interested in the final outcome. Regardless of how many posts, queries, etc…what did the OP get and are they happy with their purchase. PS:

    Make:
    Model:
Price (inclusive of everything, please list):

It'd be nice to have an OZB spreadsheet of new car purchases just to see how things are going.

  • Really nice cars, but….move it on once out of warranty.

  • +1

Buy a Kia Cerato S Safety MY23 Hatchback instead.

    • Will never understand this hype, better off with an MG 3 and I say that unironically

      • Dunno about you but I've driven both and the Cerato is years ahead of the MG 3 lol
