  • are B650 for AMD this expensive ? I got Z690 tomahawk couple of weeks back for $289, I thought it was a bad deal as I was looking for a cheap MB but couldn't find any, I had to get a separate PS/2 to USB converter for extra $10 :/

You are paying a considerable amount more for an ATX board on AM5 at the moment. You can pick up basic mATX B650 options for 199$ or A620 for 132$.

      • ah! seems that the prices of MBs have gone up significantly, I got my B550M mATX 2 years back for $85 from a deal. I wonder why they are this expensive, given that they don't even contain a North bridge now, just a glorified South bridge as the chipset.

Boards have overall gotten more complex since a couple years ago - more layers on average to handle higher frequency memory and pcie4/5 switches for more m.2 slots and pcie lanes. I do agree that some of these are still too expensive for what you're getting. Only time will tell.

      • The mATX equivalent of the Tomahawk (B650M Mortar?) is $285 currently so the ATX tax isn't too bad here.

But good shout on the $199 model for those that don't need the extra features.

also just checked, Z690 Tomahawk is $289 again with same codes. It would be cheaper to go for an Intel system.

if anyone needs PS/2 ports, this active adapter works well.

@bazingaa: Intel would be cheaper now, but the longevity of AMDs chipsets will be save you much more when it comes to updating the CPU in the years to come.

            • @swimmingtoad: Depending on the case, I have a B550M with 5600x and there was no use of it when I upgraded. I usually get the cheapest possible motherboard as I have never upgraded CPU later, as it is the most expensive.

          • @bazingaa: That link comes to $296.65 with code?

  • Reviews seem to agree that its a decent entry level board for ATX size but can be a worry if youre looking to expand to Gen 5ssds down the track.

I did a bunch of research before buying mine, it ended up being a toss up between this and the gigabyte equivalent which actually has gen 5 m2. But I got caught out the last time i purchase a mainboard and got one with pcie 4 which I never actually ended up upgrading to, so I figured I wont make the same mistake again. Also this way I avoid the coil whine issue the gigabytes have.

      • Apparently the on board audio on the MSI is a lot better than the Gigabyte, along with the coil whine issue that's another reason why I'm getting the MSI.

i had same thoughts re: gen 5 but was convinced its not something i need to worry about anyway

  • Shit got my B450 when they were the current gen for like 170. How are motherboards this pricey now.

    • The whole AM5 platform is still quite pricey. Probably best to wait a few months.

And they wonder why people won't buy AM5.

This board should be $122 to be a bargain.

    • +2

yeah im looking at this board in particular but im gonna wait until under $300
      edit: screw it, its $14

    • I got the MSI MPG B650 Carbon WiFi for $277 on an MSI sale in July. A better board than this one.

      • yeah that was a banger of a deal, carbon is one of their high-tier sku's

Mine arrived this morning…. of course it goes on sale the same day. Its always the way.

    • +2

Actually I purchased mine through amazon, maybe I can return it and purchase this?

      • +1

        yes, you can return it.

            @XeKayeM:

            Big brain time.

            Really?

            You have just outed yourself

What happens when Amazon check the serial numbers and they don't match?

Taking it further, how many Amazon customers received a delivery of a B650 Tomahawk today, bragged about doing a swap on a public forum and then initiate a return over the next few weeks?

If you're going to do dodgy shit, keep quiet about it

            • @Look Up: ok I unpublished :) although your post will say the same thing now haha
Serial number wont be an issue, both are from computer alliance but im unsure if they track serials as they ship.

I ordered this and the 7800x3d from Computer Alliance via eBay (QLD) on Sunday and they arrived Tuesday morning in VIC. Nice fast shipping.

  • If you don't need a ATX board, the Gigabyte b650M Pro Ax is going to $275. I got one to myself
