Everyone needs to remember that these are nothing more than a deterrent and you should really never let your wheels out of your sight. The cable lock would be simple to get through in seconds and the U lock not much longer. I've had a friend lose a locked scooter from within a cinema lobby from someone who casually just cut the lock faster than you can say ozbargain.

Use a U-lock. I'm guessing the thief wasn't using an angle grinder.
The cable is to stop opportunistic druggies while you are having coffee nearby, in sight.

      • Nah, just a basic bolt cutter goes right through cheap Ulocks like they're warm butter.

    • What would you recommend? Isn't any lock just a matter of time to break?

      • +1

The decision is size/weight/convenience against the complexity/length of time to break. Generally, a U-lock offers the best protection, but there is a wide range within them. I use an Abus folding lock as I prefer the form factor for carrying.

      • Use a heavy, thick U-lock with an accessory for attaching it to your bike while riding so you don't need to carry it in your bag. But, personally I recommend using 2 locks. It may make a bike thief think twice if they have to take the time to cut through 2 locks. Also, if you're prepared to spend the money (I'm not), an AirTag or something may help you track your bike down if stolen.

        • Brand recommendations for this?

      • Yes.

There are plenty of videos showing locks tested to 'breakage' and plenty of lock ratings on bicycle websites after extensive testing. Also plenty of tips on lock placement - eg off the ground, "mid bike" is best so bolt cutters are less easily used. ALL worth perusing. Locks are a risk/cost trade-off. Essentially you get what you pay for.

Battery-powered grinders have been a boon for thieves in some places OS, not sure what the theft rate is here. Daughter bought an Abus Granit X+ on special to ward off potential larcenists in London. Insurance would have been cheaper (they have a competitive bike insurance market).

      • Look up The Lock Picking Lawyer on YouTube

      • Get bike insurance with an approved u-lock. This is the only way live stress-free

      • I leave a shit on my seat.
If someone wants my bike badly enough to sit in my shit, they deserve it.

    • Usually they would take one that isn't locked up so the whole deterrent thing works to a point. You just need to be sensible about where you leave it and for how long.

Better off spending more and getting a decent D-lock from brands like kryptonite, check cycling reviews. More expensive ofc but the proper ones you need to make two angle grinder cuts.

  • WARNING: The cable lock has bad reviews stating how easy it was to force apart with only using their hands and how their scooters got stolen.

The u-lock has better reviews. I purchased it from JB and it’s pretty good. The specs from Himo website are:

    Dimensions: 200 x 158 x 34mm
    Weight: 0.91kg
    Grade: Super B grade
Core technology: Zinc alloy nickel plated
    Beam material: 40Cr heat treated
    Diameter: 34mm (with silicone)
    Dust and water rating: IP67
    Keying interchange rate 1/600
    Max. pull-off force: 30KN

It’s 34mm thick I think is pretty good and takes 30KN of force to pull apart is also very good and it’s category Super B Grade is also good.

What does other people think of these specs?

    • It is missing the more important detail, shackle diameter, not counting plastic. Which makes is sus.

    • lol never seen "pull off" strategy
