Is It Tuesday Again? Terabyte Tuesday Usenet Deal from NewsGroupDirect - $40 Instead of $100

120

It's Tuesday again in America and while it's almost or is Wednesday here, Newsgroupdirect.com is having another Terabyte Tuesday sale.

1 TB of Usenet for $40, instead of the standard $100. This is a block account so there is no time limit. Take as long as you like to eat the whole cake.

Lots and lots has been written about this in previous deals (including by me), so I won't rehash the details.

If this does tickle your OZB bone, feel free to show some of the love by using my referral link below. It won't cost you any money, but it may help me bring the love of usenet to two friends who are on the fence.

First person who mentions the first rule of usenet gets a gold star.

Can highly recommend this. Get same speed as Astraweb from them (max out at 100 megabit on 20 connections).

    • Im still having occasional issues with their SSL connections. Seem about 10% of the time their SSL connections are really slow. I think its a time of day thing. Last time it happenefd was late saturday arvo.

  • Still haven't used up the last 550GB deal. :D

    Excellent price though.

  • bit more info:

Terabyte Tuesday means 1.1 Terabyte usenet accounts for $40 (60% off the normal rate)! Our 1 TB block account includes a 10% header allowance, bringing the total to 1.1 TB.

The sale runs from 12 AM EST on September 18 until 12 AM EST on September 19.

Our 1 Terabyte usenet block has access to our world-class retention (currently over 1,490 days), speed, completion, and our industry-leading customer service.

NewsgroupDirect blocks never expire, so you can buy as many blocks as you want and never worry about losing them.

Being a law abiding citizen I'd like to know how quickly they honour DMCA takedown notices such as for UFC events as I wouldn't want to sign up to a provider that doesn't remove the files within an hour of being posted. Anyone?

Great price though and the 10% header allowance is a very nice touch.

    • It's almost impossible to takedown files posted to Usenet. They propagate onto multiple servers very quickly.

Unless you are the one posting the UFC stuff, you don't have much to worry about.

      Refer "Legal Issues" on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Usenet

I know you are trying to help, but you don't know what you are talking about.

If a DMCA notice is served to the Usenet connection provider most of them will block access to those files. As a man of great moral character, I can only imagine that anyone trying to obtain such files will get "Missing article" for their wicked efforts.

According to Daabido when he posted this last month, these guys are resellers of Highwinds access, as is thecubenet and many others. Things get taken down fairly quickly I would think.

robinsoa, I don't think you know what you are talking about.

AFAIK 100% of the US Usenet providers respond to DCMA.

This means that UFC will be gone very quickly with the exception of Astraweb because they are a little slower to respond.

HBO for example also gets taken down, but they take a lot longer and they often don't do a very good job of it (Pars and backup providers will often save you)

If you want UFC a day after release I'm not aware of any guaranteed way to get it, however I hear that a lot of the foreign providers don't respond to them (they don't need to)

As outlander mentioned, highwinds resellers seem to take down their content the fastest.

  • im lost after read the description … Is this a online storage or something? 1.1TB cost $40 for permanently use ?

the first rule of Usenet is that you don't talk about Usenet

  • I think I may switch to this group, Astraweb lately have had a lot of parts missing on a lot of their files. It is becoming troublesome. I mean, how the hell else am I supposed to download my legal copies of Linux and freeware that are all 1TB?

    • I we using them as a backup, but now it's my primary as their retention seems quite good & they're cheaper.

Used them last time they were on special 550 GB for $20.
But speeds are too slow for me.

Here is what they responded with when someone emailed them about slow speeds:

    Hi,
I definitely believe your issue lies in the fact that you're in Australia. No matter which server you choose it's going to be a loooong distance. If you're able to get even half your max ISP speed then I think that's a win.
Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.
    Jim

    • I don't have a problem with their speeds. I easily reach 1.5-6 MB/s when I download. For me, that's my whole bandwidth and normal browsing is useless if I don't have any limits on downloading in place. Are you SSL? I remember reading that it can be a bit fiddly depending on the ports used, but, like I said I've never had any problems.

    • These guys don't max out my 11mbit ADSL2+ connection. At most I get around 5mbit/s on a non-SSL connection.

Astraweb is faster, but more expensive when it comes to block plans.

      • I use Supernews/Astraweb and get 80mbit on my Bigpond 100mbit cable :)

        • astraweb's price is $10 more than this which isn't really a lot of money.

Do you think $10 would be worth it to not obtain content through a highwinds reseller?

        • For UFC/HBO or certain movies, yes.

Example: when The Dark Knight Rises was in cinema's there was a huge sweep of takedowns to the previous movies on Usenet.

        • What's special about a 'high winds reseller' ?
How are they different to any other provider ?

  • Just signed up :) Usenet is new to me, could anyone please give me some direction to setting up etc or even a link?
