Does the ozbargain crowd recommend this? Worth the price?

    • +3

If not in a hurry I would ask you to wait, lowest was $1099 on Edu store, but can drop to that price for thanksgiving at other stores too.. with 15% ultimate gift cards it will be a bargain
      Hope it makes sense

I've had a high end $1500 Yamaha soundbar for years… then I eventually upgraded to a 5.1 system with a NS-777 pair at the front.

If I knew how absurdly better just a pair of frontal tower speakers were… I'd never have bought the soundbar.

A good tower pair has enough bass, clarity and fills your room N times better than any sound bar. I'd get that or a small pair of bookshelves if you don't have the budget for a receiver + speakers (like the Edifier S1000). For affordable speakers (below 5-10k), size matters a lot.

      • +9

i was the opposite, went from a yamaha 5.1 surround system to this in my living room.

Just perferred this set up for the cleaner look and think it performs extremley well for size and price.

Also for my space, it was easier for me to have powered rear speakers vs speaker cables at the rear.

I went from having a Marantz AVR and Krix 7.1 setup with a tv cabinet, huge 15" sub in the room and cables galore to wall mounting my tv and the q990b soundbar and put the sub under the couch.

The soundbar is better for movies and good enough for music that I don't miss the old setup at all.

The minimalism and simplicity is a huge win. I won't go back and would recommend this to anyone

I went from having a Marantz AVR and Krix 7.1…

          to q990b soundbar…

The soundbar is better for movies…

I find this hard to believe!

          • @ShortyX: It's better for movies with Dolby Atmos but probably not much different for basic surround.
Our lounge is smallish and the avr setup was harder to get right as we have the couch against the back wall. I was never happy with it but the soundbar and rear speakers worked perfectly.
In our old house with a massive home theatre room I'm sure there would have been a difference but I don't think it would be that great anyway.

        • +1

Exactly this. The minimalism and simplicity, could not agree more. I have a 11.2.2 Atmos setup in a theatre room, and added this Samsung setup to my lounge. I am super tempted to throw out the Denon 11.2.2 and replace with this Samsung in my theatre, the sound is "incredible for the price".

      • I also went the opposite. Moved from a pair of Kef towers for a front and an Atmos setup to a Samsung Q930B due to moving from a house to an apartment. For music it's very noticeable. For movies it's not that bad. Of course nowhere near the full setups.. Q Symphony definitely helps with Samsung TVs.

        • +1

OH forgot about how good Q symphony is! Really helps with the dialog in movies!

But yeah music aint great on soundbar set ups, however my misses find it alot easier for her to play music via the soundbar set up vs the amp setup

          • @tkboi: Exactly! It took my impression on the soundbar from "I'm going back to a full system" to "I can live with this". It helps alot with the clarity and positioning of dialog otherwise.

I recently got my Yamaha receiver shipped back to me. So maybe I'll create a stereo only setup from that just for music. It's a bit of an overkill to use an Atmos receiver to drive a pair of speakers but I definitely don't miss the mess of speaker cables going everywhere.
Wish soundbars supported external fronts and subs.

      • Same, had JBL floorstanding speakers with bookshelf surrounds. Replaced it all with a Q990B for space reasons, and while it's not as good as the JBL (except the sub which is actually more powerful than the anemic JBL it replaced), it was good enough that I didn't mind and largely forgot after a couple of days.

But pulling out the speaker cabling made me realise how messy it all was, and a good soundbar takes far less space than big 5.1 boxes + a receiver. And my receiver was a bit old, so now I can enjoy easy bluetooth streaming.

I got this exact model, a couple months ago. Similar-ish deal online, got the new JB HiFi in my town to price match (that was a process… But I got there).

Amazing rig! I had a Old School 5.1 wired (Pioneer head unit) that I replaced, and I honestly haven't missed it. Room shape definitely plays more of a part, with this driver set up, but as far as wireless, this is the most impressive set up I have heard yet.

      • I picked this up a week ago and still figuring out the best setup for Movies/Gaming/TV/YouTube. I’m mostly using Adaptive and Surround. What settings are you using?

        • +1

I just leave it on Adaptive for everything. I find that when I put it on surround, centre unit (voices) are not as clear as I want them to be. But, if I turn on voice enhancement or centre level up individually, I find that voice stands out too much. Adaptive seems to have very slight louder centre for me and I like it the best.

    • Yes and yes

    • +1

Very happy with mine. Got rid of the amp and 5.1 speakers and much cleaner set up. Sound is great with movies and TV. I dont use it for music.

  • +1

Thanks OP, just priced match to JB and used my perks voucher too.

    • +1

Did you do the 15% off ultimate gift card too?

      • +3

Yeah, the worker had no issues with me paying with them

  • +2

for a soundbar this sounds fantastic. i have the 2 previous iterations q950a and q990b and love them

    • How do you compare the Q990B to the Q990C? Is there much difference? What dimensions is the room you're using it in?

      • From memory I believe the hardware is identical, but the C has a few software tweaks/additions

      • +1

i dont own the 990c as stated i have the previous 2 iterations which are great. minuscule difference between the two i own

Nothing can be better than any Yamaha S Bar or S Projector

  • does this have 4K/120Hz passthrough?

    • +1

      Nope.

      • Thanks!

        • +2

But does support eARC if you're wanting Atmos for gaming.

          • @Ninternet: Yes, but with Samsung when it works it’s great, but when it doesn’t it’s horrible and Samsung support are the worst. I had to disable Dolby digital and switch to pcm, or the sound kept dropping out.

  • +6

JB Hi-Fi will price beat down to $1,143 then use 15% discounted ultimate gift cards and $30 perks voucher if you have one.

    • Have you been able to do this?
      This would be worth doing!!

      Can anyone confirm?
Are ultimate gift cards easy to get?

      • They will but if you use the chat to price match/beat then the fine print says you can't use ultimate cards. Not sure if it's actually restricted tho.

        • +1

Oh man, would hate to be stuck with $1000 card

      • Yes. Did instore earlier today.

      • I did this yesterday. Price matched at jb hifi and used ultimate gift cards to pay in store.

    • I tried but I could only get a $500 ultimate gift card, and the JB Hifi checkout only allows 1x credit card/ultimate gift card. Is there a way to do $1000?

      • in store or online chat?

        • I'm talking about ultimate gift cards. The max value per card is $500 and you can only use 1 card during JB Hifi checkout. The ultimate gift cards are not like normal JB Hifi gifts cards. They are like a Visa or Mastercard giftcard, with a credit card number, ccv and expiry.

          • @spiderbite88: Yes, check out online or check out at the store?

            • +1

@Owgasm: Can definitely use multiple instore.

              • @sbv72: Oh I didn't think of going in store. Can you do price match and perks in store?

    • What is ultimate gift card and how to get one?

  • Bought this a couple of months ago for the same price. Remember guys this is the ‘C’ version and not ‘B’ version. All the dropout issues and hardware bugs are fixed. This is a great product and performs stunningly well. If you are in the market for something like this, I recommend this model highly!

    • I have the B and no "current" issues to report and I am for the most part very happy with it.
The only issue I ever had with it was it lost wifi for some reason and no matter what I did I couldn't reconnect it, even my smart things app was having issues with detecting a compatible wifi network???
Next day it all worked fine again with no tinkering. I only noticed because I sometimes play music to it from my Echo Dot.

Can you share some known issues that I need to be aware of and possible solutions? Is there a firmware update? or does it do it itself?

      • WiFi dropouts and the sound-bar losing connection to rear speakers, especially rear-left, have been reported. I think it was something to do with a chip that got replaced in the 'C' version, but Samsung maintains they did not do a hardware upgrade to the 'C' version. Maybe they fear owners sending the older versions back? Not sure.

Here is one of such issue reported on Reddit. However, I can confirm that in the 'C' version, I have had no dropouts or connection issues. Works like a charm, so whatever they did, they fixed issues. Hopefully, you don't see any issues in the future, all the best!

Ive got the older Q950A (with rears and sub) and its incredible. Dolby Atmos movies and shows are just on point. One of the best purchases I've ever made.

  • +1

Hi Guys, does that really have 15 speakers and a sub or is there some interesting marketing going on here?

    • It comes with a soundbar, 2 rear speakers and a sub. The soundbar has up-firing, side-firing and wide-range tweeters which align in such a way that in combination with the rear speakers and sub, you get a 11.1.4 CH experience. Pretty amazing quality!

  • +1

The price has dropped to $1159.

  • Is it worth waiting till Dec for any further discounts? Do you expect the price might fall down further in Nov/Dec sale times?

    • Not beyond the GC price

  • How do we get the price beat rather than the price match a JB?

Do you pricing online then pick up at store or do it all at store?

    • I don't think JB will beat it, maybe you can try asking different people in-store?

  • +1

I price matched it online with JB. Converted the ultimate gift card to JB Hifi cards and was able to pay for it online using this cards. No need to talk to any JB staff, all done online. Final price: $985.15!
