      • Yeah it's really a shit show. Every time I check the ports available but don't know what version of HDMI it is. Can't tell on technical specifications given they don't list how many is that version 2.1 just HDMI ports that's it

Also new TVs have much less inputs than 10 years ago

My old Sony in 2010 had component, HDMI, RCA the lot. These days you are lucky to get 4 HDMI inputs without the rest. I don't want to dump my old Sony

They deliberately made the TVs without enough ports so you need a Hifi to act like a Switch or pass through. It's BS. Otherwise need a HDMI switcher which most of the time quality is abysmal.

It's cost cutting and less components for light weight

One the the major benefits of 8k is being able to do 4k 60fps with HDR. This is the only reason I am waiting for a deal on a 8k 9.2 channel receiver.

Currently I have to manually switch my NVIDIA shield from 4k 60fps (when streaming sports) and 4k 24fps HDR (for everything else)

      • +1

Actually the major benefit is 4K/120, VRR, ALLM etc. The biggest consumer for this tech is the gamer. This is why it has become mainstream tech now.

  • shame doesn't support bi-amp

    I remember and 80s and 90s.

Many people would spend 2-4 weeks salary on a home Hifi/surround sound system. Bonus points if you had a graphic equiliser.

These days, very rare would people have a home Hifi/surround sound/home theatre system, let alone one that costs 2-4 weeks salary.

Name brand 7.2 Channel AV Receiver for a few days week is cheap.

    • You cant even find speakers at JB HiFi anymore - only sound bars. Times have changed, and traditional home theatres are becoming more niche and rare.

      • Go search Gummie & FB marketplace. If you know what you are looking for, there are many great speakers available at a great price.

        • Oh yeah of course, point being in 5 years time because they are no longer popular, there will be less second hand stock of the current generation to find online. Right now is still OK.

          • @Kill Joy: I think due to wireless, and app integration like Sono's etc is very convenient. I If you want raw HP, you go for the respectable floor-standers

            • @vinni9284: convenience has diluted the perception of sound quality. I have seen people online and had first hand conversations with people who believe their Atmos soundbar is just as a good or good enough as opposed to proper home theatre setup lol.. This could not be further from the truth.

      • I think its because people's houses are getting smaller and these arent exactly close proximity neighbour/misso friendly.

I'll likely have to revert to a soundbar when i move out

        • If anything houses are getting larger but within closer proximity.

      • You know, now that you mention it, you’re correct.
Haven’t seen speakers in years. Then again I haven’t set foot in JB for years.

I had a quick google on their floor standing speaker.

The ONLY floor standing speaker they have for sale is this https://www.jbhifi.com.au/collections/floor-speakers what an abomination lol

I remember that they use to sell Dali speakers which was/is decent.

        • +1

          Yeah, those were the days.

My first set was a price error from jbhifi on a pair of Dali concept 6's. Online ended up stacking 20% off their already 20% off price. Came down to something like $400. Still trade hands on marketplace for around this

    • +1

That was before video processing, hence would last for many years. The old school hi-fi units will wipe the floor of these tinny AV receivers

      • +1

yeah but people don't care about quality anymore, they just want convenience

and it's not even a matter of money, as a good sound bar costs the same as an entry level AVR + decent pair of tower speakers, which will be much much better in pure sound quality

        • +1

If I ever buy a sound bar, I would give up beer and drink milk!

        • You’re probably correct.

I use to own a fairly decent hifi system. Since I moved house, my Pioneer AV receiver is sitting in my cupboard.

We now use Google Home to listen to music. Haven’t bought a CD in well over a decade.

The loudest speaker I now use is Google Home Max which doubles as my soundbar.

      • I hooked up my DIY speakers and 2 channel amp to my TV over the weekend, and it's been a moderate quality improvement over the smaller bookshelf speakers they replaced. Which in turn have been better than any soundbar I've ever heard.

    • Those soundbars are not cheap neither people still save for Sonos with 2-4 weeks salary.

Can you name a wireless soundbar with 7.1 with a fair price?

  • Will the surround sound work with streaming services like Netflix, Disney, Stan and Binge? I am using a Chromecast with a Sony amp but it won't do surround with the Chromecast. The only thing I can get surround from is the Playstation with DVDs or Bluerays. Does it have built in Chromecast or still better to use an external one? I only have 1080p TV and not planning to upgrade any time soon.

    • This is more to do with your TV I think or how you have setup. Plug your Chromecast directly into the receiver.

Alternatively use an optical out from your TV into the receiver. Check the settings in the Chromecast.

      • Thanks, the Chromecast is direct into the receiver. My TV doesn't support ARC, or optical surround out etc. It's a 10 year old Kogan 1080p screen

    • Honestly, an upgrade to a 4k tv has never been easier, well worth the investment even if it is second hand off gumtree

      • I don't see why though. My TV is fine and most content I don't even watch in 1080.

        • Its only a couple of hundred dollars for one off gumtree. With all the smart features inbuilt its really a no brainer. The boost in picture quality is a bonus

  • Could I please validate something here. Currently have the Denon AVR-X1400H unit which i guess is running really well. Had it for several years. Have some good quality Q acoustic speakers set up in a 7.1 arrangement. All media is streamed via Nvidia Shield and the unit seems good at picking up the right audio profile (ATMOS, etc) and everything sounds good. Connected to an LG C1 display

So….is there really any benefit in my upgrading in this instance?

    • Don't waste your money unless you're buying an 8K TV?

      • Cheers

  • @takis

Good to see amplifier deals. They aren't too common. I get the impression most people now are using built in TV speakers or or a soundbar. Having to cut and install speaker wire for each speaker you add to your amp is too much effort for most people.

    • I think consumer behaviour overall is towards convenience over performance, a lot of people will watch shows on Tablets, laptops & phones over a big tv and the same goes for sound.

I would say that the issue with surround sets is the cabling and how you hide the wires, not so much the extra effort.

    • Getting them mount properly is another question all over the place with wired speakers and fixed positions. You also need a big lounge not everyone can afford.

Too much effort and money involved
