  • What's the cost to fly back to Australia?

  • +4

They are always the biggest sale ever - until the next one. I wonder how many have wasted nights staying up late for them and came away with nothing.

    • ^ This Is How It Should Be Done. Don't go chasing waterfalls people, crap sale

  • Not the greatest sale ever, other budget airlines have better prices without a Biggest Sale Ever!!

    • which budget airlines?

      • +4

the other budget air lines that cancel your ticket a few days before your scheduled to fly, i think thats the budget airlines he is referring to..

      • +1

Just back from KL & Singapore. Flew with Scoot. No problems, but strangely for the discount arm of Singapore Airlines food is not good.

$78 each way to Singapore. GC/SYD-SIN currently $138, but has been as low as $78 in last few weeks. (2 years ago AA flew GC-KL for $79) Then $18 on Air Asia to KL. So a total of $156 GC/SYD-KL, but may be cheaper.

Of course Scoot is new & only flies from Sydney & GC at the moment & few destinations in Asia. Have flown with AA & AAx. This is not a great price.

This is not the greatest sale in the world, NO! This is just a tribute…

  • +3

C'mon guys, yes, it's the next "biggest ever" sale, yadayada, but to be fair - some fares are really tempting.

For me AirAsia offers a great value for your money, haven't been disappointed so far.

Unfortunately the travel period doesn't match with my plans, otherwise I would join the queue :) Good luck to all :)

I remember the Biggest Sale was: AUD$150 RETURN ticket from Melb—->KL—->Melb

when does $179 ONE WAY = Biggest Sale?

  • Air Asia "waiting room" page?? Surely they gotta be taking the pi$$

Where is the television screen? ARGHHHHHHHH!!!

Managed to secure Perth-Osaka return tickets at ~$400 each! Fares were up at 11:50pm, just before their midnight "launch". Flown with them before and it's good value for money :) Can't wait for their new KLIA2 airport to be open by the time I travel next year!

  • +1

Well it took some patience, but secured Perth - Bali return for $216 per person return (incuding baggage and pre seating). That's a pretty big sale in my book!

  • Sounds like a reasonable sale to me. Has anyone got better offers from other vendors at the moment? if not, this is a good enough promotion.
@Kal: Please let us know if other budget airlines are offering a better deal as you mentioned.

    Melb-KL @ $290 return in June/July '13. Thanks Air Asia! (2.30am to 4.45 am … grumble, mumble)
Now to search for some onward holiday flights - Krabi?

    • Grumble, Mumble indeed. I am feeling the pain of staying up until 3:30 am as well, but hey it's worth the savings!

  • 2 adults 2 kids Melbourne to Tokyo $1988 including lugggage

    Cop that!!!!!!

  • 2 adults 2 kids during the school hols Melbourne to Phuket for $1908. No luggage :(

    Not too shabby though!

  • Hey I just booked Krabi, 2 adults 2 kids return from KL - $311 ($78 each).

Booked Bandung (Indonesia) too - $345 for 4, or $86 each.

    That makes $454 return Melb-Krabi-Bandung.

  • Couldn't find ANY Melbourne to KL return flights cheaper than $650, so meh. I'd pay the extra $150 for MAS and go more comfortably.

  • Just wanted to say, think very hard about travelling with Airasia as ive just returned today from a 6 week trip around Asia with them from their last sale and have some horror stories including safety and security issues that are being reported. The main issues though are their stupid policies, unprofessional, untrained staff and are very hard to deal with in the event of a problem and also the airport they use. I wont post what happened now as its a long story but just think a bit before going ahead with anything and make sure you get full insurance or it will really end up as false economy. It is really worth extra money to go with a reputable full service carrier but I learnt that lesson the hard way.

Can you please elaborate? I'd be keen to hear what issues you've had.

I've flown with them on AirAsiaX in 2009 and again on AirAsia last month and couldn't fault them at all. I've booked seats on this sale so would appreciate it if you could share your story

      • Sure, its a long story but we travelled with them with no problem for 6 weeks, had 3 carry on bags each time, small and under the 7kg limit, they didnt even look at them even when we asked them to check each of the other times. I unfortunately got pretty sick due to an ongoing illness during the trip but luckily it was time to come home anyway and my mum also has a big stress problem with flying, but is fine if she gets on the plane with no hassles.

Unfortunately the last trip home to Australia wasn't as smooth as the others and for some reason they didn't allow any of our hand luggage on, apart from 1 small bag, it was confusing since we transited through the LCCT numerous times over the last few weeks with no problem. All our luggage was under the 7kg, and we also paid for 30kg checkin baggage each, and only used 20kg, so thats 20 kg of unused baggage. We asked other staff on other flights if it would be better to buy another bag to check in and they said no, because it was light, but they didn't even let a small shopping bag each onto the plane this flight. They were very unhelpful and rude even when we were asking what we could do about it, the luggage in question only weighed at 1kg maximum and they suggested finally that we get a box, but from where? The condition I have involves blood loss, and stress makes it worse aswell and I tried to explain to them and that I had to go through to the boarding gate ASAP to avoid a problem but each staff member laughed, and thought it was funny I had a condition like that then simply ignored us.
We were standing around for a number of hours until we almost missed our flight and my condition worsened, when they finally got a box from somewhere for us, it weighted under 1kg and checked it in. It made it seem even more crazy, I could understand if we had gone over our baggage allowance or something but we hadn't.

We talked to them about their policy that anything checked in is not covered for theft or damage, and ive heard lots of horror stories about their baggage handling, theft, lost and broken items and was worried about what we had put in the box since they didn't let us take it onboard. When we got onto the plane finally, the plane had many empty seats, and many overhead compartments empty too, this made me really angry that we had waited around when I was sick all for nothing.

When we arrived in Sydney, the box was squashed, and the contents were damaged, most likely because it was so light in weight and was thrown in with the other luggage. and had no padding or packaging ofcourse. Nothing could be done ofcourse.

The safety issues mentioned are mainly the fact that people were allowed very heavy bags on, over 7kg, aslong as its not more than 1 bag which is much more dangerous. The hot seats I also noticed had the tray tables down to block people sitting there, its been brought up on other sites but it also blocks the safety exits when they do this, ive since found other questionable safety stories since.

It was really bad how they handled what would have been a simple problem. We still don't know why we were let through every other time, and staff said it was ok to have 3 bags to take onboard, when they have a policy of just 1.

I guess they are ok, if you take just 1 bag and have no problem, but Airasia would be really bad to deal with if there was any problems.

I realise you found Air Asia issues difficult, especially given your health problems. (I am an unhealthy traveller with some brain damage. But I travel OS up to 9 months a year - on discount airlines. I have enough problems just posting this.)

By their rules, cabin baggage is limited to 7kg/person. That can be 1 small bag that fits their size restriction, possibiy plus 1 small handbag etc - as long as it is a max of 7kg total. In short flights I found they usually did not enforce that rule, but they can. Luggage restrictions tend to be enforced on full & longer flights in my experience.
I like Scoot for the 7kg plus up to 3kg laptop or small bag (& they are cheaper). I fly Scoot to Singapore & travel on with AA.

Airlines around the world have an issue with oversized/ overweight carry-on. That's why they have the rules. All airlines can restrict or refuse luggage. Its in the T&C.

Pity they did not deal with your luggage issue more helpfully & diplomatically!

Unfortunately that airport was not a good one to explain a complex reason for dealing with a simple luggage problem. i've seen too many heated arguments at LCCT over overweight baggage.
(After years of discount flights, I carry an additional light bag that folds up small & know the airlines requirements. Never had an issue, and I now only travel with carry-on for 7-13 weeks.)

As for tray tables blocking exit rows - can't see a safety issue you see.
In an emergency there would be no real issue as would be quickly folded up - faster than moving people out of the seats. Crew need to access the emergency door before any passenger is allowed near.

(Discount airlines seem to have a problem with people grabbing free seat upgrades. Often seats are blocked to stop this. Have also had this on domestic Australian flights. An elderly person who could not speak English insisted on sitting in that row, & kept returning after being told it was against aviation law. People seated in those rows need to be able to help in evacuation.)
Allowing people to sit in those seats who could not assist would hinder evacuation more than having to fold up the trays.

Hope you have better travels in the future!

        • Ofcourse, I know about the 7kg rule, that wasn't the issue with us. All our baggage was well under the limit, they didn't weigh it but we did. They just didnt want a woman's handbag and a shopping bag on the same flight. Ive been with over 50 different airlines over the years, and never had this issue, though they do sometimes stop people taking stuff on if they're trying to compensate for excess baggage, and because we had only used 20kg of the 30 we paid for we certainly weren't doing this.

        • Carry-on allowances are independent of in-hold luggage allowance, and are dealt with separately. Lots of discussions online about carry-on allowances with AA eg http://forum.lowyat.net/topic/1477502/all

Reading 8.6 in http://www.airasia.com/my/en/aaxtnc.page you are allowed 1 7kg small bag PLUS a handbag/ laptop/ etc - all must be able to fit under seat/ in locker. Can't see why they were so upset.

Most economy (not just discount) flights now have similar restrictions on carry-on baggage, but may not enforce it like AA. Years ago you could pretty well carry on most things. Now cost efficiencies dictate fast turn around times - which rely on fast seating - which is slowed down by carry-on, costing airlines money.

A friend & I were comparing baggage at Brisbane International last week on our returns from Malaysia. He was on Emirates with standard included allowance of 30Kg in-hold. But Emirates still has a limit of 1 piece of size restricted carry-on baggage, max of 7kg. Of course his fare was many times mine! Whereas my carry-on was under 10kg with Scoot (a backpack which met size restriction (max 7kg) & small day-pack (up to 3kg) which was a bit bigger than a handbag/laptop but got through. If it was challenged, it still fitted in the backpack to meet the size rules & I could wear layers of clothes & stuff excess weight in my pockets - am always prepared). Scoot is new, and Australian staff were very friendly letting my slightly overweight carry-on through. Glad I didn't fly with Air Asia as my medicine alone weighs 2kg on the way out of Oz.

Travelled on Ryan Air in 2006, where they seem to scare people out of carrying luggage in-hold. There were prominent warnings of no responsibility for damaged luggage. I switched to carry-on only & wore 3 layers of clothes through check-in (once past check-in, repacked bag). Travel is a lot easier with light luggage, if you can get away with it.

Still for a hassle free flight, if you have in-hold baggage allowance to spare, it is handy to have some room to take what may not be allowed on board - as long as you carry-on valuable & fragile items, medicine, & documents. I would not want the hassles & stress you went through. Budget travel can have its downside. But sounds like those staff need better training!!

          Happy travels.

    • Good experience on almost all AA flights.
Only problem was a faulty hydraulic pump (discovered while 6 month old plane was being inspected on tarmac) on a flight out of Gold Coast. Delayed flight 24 hours as no local pump was available through an agreement with Jetstar. The plane you fly to KL on is the plane that just flew in from KL.

Discount flights usually fly from airports without necessary maintenance facilities, so can be a problem if something goes wrong with plane. Was given 2 $20 vouchers for food & drink in airport, before bus to resort room for night & $50 voucher for dinner & breakfast.

BUT this issue happens with all airlines. Was delayed over 3 hours in Narita (Tokyo) on a JAL flight as they needed to replace aircraft for maintenance at last minute. That meant a late night arrival. Certainly not a discount flight, and Narita is their base with lots of aircraft available on the tarmac.

Had a few days between flights in KL & on to London ($650 return from GC), so a lost day was not a big deal on a 13 week holiday. I always allow a bit of time for problems with connections, even on full price flights.

same here, I have only GOOD experience with Air Asia.

the only complaint is the price of these air ticket are getting higher & higher…..

      • Thats why I fly over on Scoot (was $78 each way Syd/GC to Singapore) & use AirAsia within the region.
