Royal Brunei: Melbourne to Tokyo $678 Return with 20kg Luggage (May '25 - March '26 incl. Ski Season) @ Google Flights

1390

Great fares on full service Royal Brunei Airlines flying into Tokyo Narita via Bandar Seri Begawan. These are a good price anytime, but for dates during ski season I'd say they are around HALF the normal price!

Royal Brunei is a dry airline, but they do allow you to BYO on board. Flights include 20kg checked luggage.
Dates are from May 2025 to March 2026 (excluding December and the first half of Jan) and include ski season dates.

I like to use Google Flights to easily find dates, then you can book through their links, too.

Would go if it were from my city

    • +1

its like 100 bucks return on velocity points :D

  • -2

How are you supposed to BYO if you can't bring liquids on board?

    • +8

you can purchase duty free once you've cleared security and take it on the plane.

      • +12

Duty free purchased aren't for immediate use/consumption tho

        • I did look into this and while it is technically against Australian Aviation rules, when you're leaving the country and landing in another it is probably effectively unenforceable if the airline allows you to consume the duty free you purchase on the plane. Maybe if someone snitched on the airline they might get in trouble? But I hardly seeing it topping their list of priorities.

I personally hate drinking on flights as it doesn't relax me at all and it contributes to the dryness and congestion that comes with pressurised environments. Much prefer melatonin and as much sleep as I can possibly get.

      • Do they sell VB? I like to treat myself on international flights.

    • In your bladder already maybe?

    • You're allowed liquids under 100mL, ie minis of spirits. There's also duty free.

      • You cannot immediately consume the duty free item, can you ? Thought it needed to be in that seeled bag.

        • +2

Just refill the bottle of vodka with water once you’re done.

        • +1

You buy duty free at the airport, get on plane, drink your duty free. No one is checking your duty free on arrival at your destination.

Only issue you might run into is transiting at BWN airport if they do a security scan before boarding your onward flight to Japan and you have more than 100mL.

Solution, drink all your duty free. Or by two small lots, one for each for each flight.

    • +22

You can't go without alcohol for a few hours?

      • +4

        Of course not.

        • +3

No drinking problem in Australia, move on.

      • +2

        Not without shaking uncontrollably.

And it's more like 17 hours with the stopover and all the other parts of flying

    • Drink at the lounge before you board the flight ?

      • -4

If you have lounge access you probably wouldn't be flying Royal Brunei

        • Nah, plenty of cheapies w/ AMEX or similar Priority Pass access that are frugal

    • +1

Same procedure as getting into festivals.

For liquids, goon bag in your pant leg tucked into your sock.

For solids or powders, shelve it.

      • Trent from punchy is that you?

  • Has been getting smashed with 1 star reviews lately

    • +1

      This.

Need to have ultra low expectations for Royal Brunei.

      • +2

They get a 4-star rating on skytrax. There are some trade offs with low prices for sure

        • +1

          They get a 4-star rating(skytraxratings.com) on skytrax.

How much did they pay for that?

      • +5

Why would I have low expectations when royal is in their name.

        I expect the finest experience

    • +2

i havent had issues with Royal Brunei. The food were really good actually.

EDIT: looking around for recent reviews seem to indicate the quality is declining lately…

    • +1

Nah they're up there as one of my favourite airlines. Truly wonderful experience every time I fly with them.

  • Looks like they don't fly to Sydney at all?

    • +2

They only fly from Melbourne at the moment

  • +17

Probably worth mentioning there's a 7 hour layover in the post.

    • -6

there's a 7 hour layover in the post.

It only took me about two minutes.

      • +16

As useful as a knitted condom, as per usual JV

      • +1

        Including foreplay LOL

    • +7

I've done a 3.5 hour layover in Brunei before. There is nothing to do and very few food/drink vendors in the terminal, the 3.5 hours dragged on.

      • Bring a device & connect to WiFi?

      • There is one lounge via priority pass, quality below average but better than nothing

      • and no bar

    • +2

You can go out to the town, for a quick tour in that time.

The city centre is a 10-15 minute drive but there's not much to do in the city centre at all.

      It's quite deserted.

You can still go out to eat very cheaply, try the fruits (eg. durian, mangosteen, jackfruit, lanzones, etc.), some shopping, etc. etc.

There is a non-existent public transport, so you'll need to negotiate with a local taxi driver, to drive you around.

      PS:
You can use Singapore dollars inside the country, ie. actual Singapore currency is accepted there.

      • +1

I had an overnight layover many years ago and I still remember going around in the local bus to the mosque which was very nice.

  • +21

Reckon you're better off flying direct with ANA for about $300 more
    + Haneda instead of Narita
    + Free domestic flights
    + No stopover
+ Day time departs and returns
    + Asahi on board

    -Cost more but worth it

    • How many Asahi should I drink to compensate the price difference?

    • +2

ANA don't fly to Melbourne (and looking at the dates they have on the links, it more than 1000 more).

Only Qantas will soon fly direct to Haneda from Melbourne as JAL flies into Narita (Narita is not as some people suggest, just not as good for domestic connections).

      • I muchly look forward to the day ANA fly MEL to HND

        • +1

They'll have to relocate one of their existing slots to do this. ANA fly out of Narita for their Perth route.

    • never been to JP before, is Haneda better than Narita ?

      • It's very close to Tokyo so if lazy can just uber or taxi. Narita is a long way out so you need to train it. Haneda smaller and easier to get around.

      • Haneda is closer, it's 13 minutes on the train to/from Haneda to Shinagawa, where you can pick up the Yamanote (green circle) line or what have you. Arguably the monorail is more fun, also 13 minutes, and drops you off at Hamamatsucho (also with convenient access to the Yamanote line). Both options are about AUD$4 more or less.

Narita is about 40 minutes by Narita Express and more like AUD$40. Stops at Tokyo and Shinjuku, and sometimes Shinagawa and Shibuya as well. There's also the Keisei Skyliner, it's a little cheaper but only goes to Ueno.

(I may have got some of the facts wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me in due course)

      • +1

        Location wise, yes.

But Narita has much more interesting things to do while waiting for your flight than Haneda imo

    • I need to get from MEL to Sapporo (CTS) early Feb 26 - a mate is going with china airways, any hot tips?

      • Assuming your mate means China Airlines of Taiwan, if so, that's a hot tip as they are a quality airline and fly one of the most direct routes to CTS. You need to go to their website for the best prices. Join their membership program and wait for sale days and birthday discounts.

Cathay Pacific is another hot prospect for that route. Wait for a sale. Try and get on their A350s over the 777s.

JAL is best if you want stopovers in Tokyo and are prepared to pay a slight premium for their amazing economy cabin. Otherwise it means transiting between Narita and Haneda airports - not as bad as it seems. Just avoid the JAL to SIN then Qantas back to Melbourne option.

        • Also JAL has 2x23kg luggage allowance. ANA do as well, but not with their sale fares. I don't think Singapore Airlines nor Cathay Pacific have that allowance.

May '25 - March '26 incl. Ski Season

I was disappointed with the skiing in Brunei last time I went…

    • +1

you must not have gone during their ski weekend…

I've flown with Royal Brunei once and it was an unexpectedly cool experience. Was meant to have a brief layover at the airport, but the flight was delayed and we missed our connecting flight. They put us up in a swanky hotel, organised a van to and from the airport, gave us a great buffet breakfast and we had half a day to wander around BSB. Was all well organised and well communicated.

    • a swanky hotel

Was that the Empire Hotel ?

      • +2

No idea. But as a budget traveler, it was far nicer than anywhere else I'd stayed.

    • +3

Yep, can vouch for them being amazing. I was unwell on one of their flights recently and had to go to hospital in an ambulance from Brunei airport, and miss my connecting flight home to Melbourne. The staff looked after my family and helped us get transit visas, found our luggage and pulled it off the plane for us so it wouldn't go to Melbourne without us, arranged for us to catch the next available flight 4 days later at basically no charge, and while I was actually sick on board they were beyond incredible looking after me and doing everything they could for me. Can't speak highly enough of them.

  • +2

Dates are from May 2025 to March 20226

Deal runs for 18,000 years !

RB is a decent airlines. I flew with them few times (Economy). Good legroom, average food, boring airport, comfort seat, free 3/4 stars hotel for layover.

    • Oh I didn't know about the free 3/4 star hotel for layovers? How do you book those?

      • +1

Contact your travel agent or call/visit RB office in Melbourne CBD. My last few times always stay in the same one, Times Hotel. Free buffet and within the shopping complex with cinema at rooftop with plenty shops to kill time

        • Thanks, managed to add this on. Appreciate the info.

          • @yh786: Do share.

How'd you add the free hotel on?

      • +1. Found a solid deal to ICN in Sep/Oct with a 21 hours transit at BSB which we don't mind as long as there is a good hotel. How do we request?

    • +1

The food is excellent in both economy and business to our palate, actually among the best we've had. Perhaps we like Malay food already, so easy impressions

    • +1

Nah, their food is definitely above average, it's one of the best food I've had on airlines.

  • Times hotel has poor reviews

  • +1

Been flying with RB a few times MEL <> HKG before COVID
generally their aircrafts were pretty new and services were good too
also has been staying in the layover hotels a few times

Homosexuality is illegal in Brunei. Would they be arrested or imprisoned in transit?

    • +1

I think you'll find they won't even notice unless you're making our with your partner in public in which case no one should do there anyway? They're some of the kindest people I've ever met

      • -2

The kindest homophobes you've ever met?
