No deal. Qantas is no match to most Asian carriers. Lounges in all Australia are very dates/crowded. Inflight food? Bring Macca's onto the plane. (Even in J, the beef "pho" served was worse than instant noodles). Only good thing was the newly refurbished jet. But that was an Finnair plane.

ANA is around that price +/-10%

    Example https://fly.iwantthatflight.com.au/flight.ashx?po=all&ozb=70…

Date wise, some of the worst time to go Japan unless humidity is your thing.

Yep Qantas is a joke the service & the food is as bad a Jetstar of course same company they keep dropping down the list of the worlds best airline & soon to be at the bottom .I just did 4 long flights with Singapore air & all great, I took 1 business class with qantas awful .

      • -2

Not as low as Malaysia though 😬

I saw a tiktok of a woman sharing her experience of her and her 4 year old flying Qantas business class. Kiddo didn't want his meal so she put it on her tray so the kid could go back to sleep.
Instead of the staff offering to clear it and then serve her meal of choice, they assumed she was eating her childs meal and didn't serve her the meal she ordered. When she questioned it, they couldn't offer her the original meal of choice because they had given it away.
She said she had paid over $15k for these business class tickets.
Might sound trivial to be upset over a meal, but for these prices you should expect top notch service.

We generally fly business just to get some rest with overnight flight. Wish we have AirAsia with their no frills flatbed in and out of Sydney.

Having said that, Qantas is bit of a joke on food offering. so, we normally buy 24 packs nugget from Macca's to bring onboard. They are not fuzzy eaters by any stretch.

We also try to use a different lounge (NZ one when flying Sydney, emirates lounge in Sydney if they are open). Easily worse than the food court there. Not to mention how rundown the bathroom showers are.

No issue when kids are on CX, CI and SQ.

Good prices, BUT youll melt into a puddle at those times of the year

    • There are travel dates in Sep/25 and Feb-Mar/26, which is a lot cooler.

QF? No and a big NO!
I will repeat the same comment as in March.
It's just a gamble. and it doesn't offer PEY.
Prefer flying some Asian airlines with decent PEY product, anything but Qantas.

I havn't flied international with QF since COVID.
I had some points sitting there so I decide to give them an opportunity.
So I flied with them to Japan last month and I would never do that again.

First there was mechanic issue and the flight is delayed for 5 hours.
All I received was just a $15 meal voucher. $15 can't even buy a Hungry Jack meal in Melbourne Airport.
They then ask everyone get onboard and made us waited for 40 mins inside, so they can fly as soon as the "paperwork is done."

Narita has a curfew at 11pm, no flight can be landed after that.
QF managed to land my flight at around 10:45pm.
Sounds great? No! After clearing custom and collecting baggage,
It was already 11:40pm and there was no public transport except taxi/uber, which costs around $400-$500 to Tokyo at midnight.
The last train leaves at around 11pm and the last bus leaves at around 11:30pm.
I had to wait until 5am for the first train and by the time I reach my hotel, it's already 7am.
There is no compensation from QF, no transport arrangement, no hotel, no cash.
No wonder why QF is so desperate to reach Narita before 11pm so they don't have to pay a cent for compensation.

In contrast, I flied ANA from Sapporo to Tokyo a week later.
Ticket price was only around $100. It was the last flight of the day and it was delayed.
ANA admitted that they are responsible for it. (which means it's not caused by bad weather, traffic control etc.)
By the time I reached Haneda, there was no trains.
ANA pays up to $150 cash compensation for my taxi fee or hotel fee, at my choice.
That is the kind of customer service we needed in Australia.

    • Safety is one thing. But also goes to show how poorly the company is managed with no contingency plan and resourcing is "just enough". Anything that doesn't go accordingly to plan is a sht show.

I wouldn't have imagined saying this about QF 20 years back. I still remember they serve one of the best beef cheek with mash that you can get inflight.

My QANTAS flight from Singapore to Melbourne (QF38) a few weeks ago was delayed 18 hours.

Apparently was due to 2 "faulty navigation lights". The initial delay was an hour (to 12.30am) then 3 hours (3.30am) then "unknown" as they put us up in hotels in Singapore.
Luckily I'd organized a lounge pass for that leg; I can't imagine how uncomfortable it would've been for people waiting at the gate!

The hotel was very nice, but the whole situation was so badly handled.

When we finally boarded the plane at 5.30pm the next day, the "auxiliary power system" was faulty too, so they couldn't run air-conditioning in the plane on the tarmac - so the first 45 minutes in the plane was in a nice sauna of 200+ people.

    Personally wouldn't fly QANTAS again.

  • Lol i just came back from Haneda Qantas and flew to Seoul Qantas. Good seats and food, always heaps of snacks, unlimited alcohol and drinks. If i get snacky they gimme more snacks, time flew past. Not sure what ya'll complaining about. Jetstar was 600 i swapped to 900 for Qantas was great! But japans tourism is getting out of hand so yes whinge more and dont go 🫢

    • +1

Pro tip, get out the major cities and explore the more regional areas. I'm currently in Japan and some carriages have been half Japanese, half Tourist, but in more regional areas there hasn't been nearly as many.

On the side of Qantas, this thread is a bit of a whingfest. Yes both their Melbourne and Sydney international business lounges are sub par and often overcrowded, so plenty of room for improvement there as I went to their Singapore Business lounge last year and it was miles ahead. Melbourne airport has started building the extension which will allow the Qantas to move out and Sydney they say they've started but I saw nothing (They should really operate 2 business lounges in T1)

This deal is particularly good for connecting flights within Australia (ADL, CBR, HBA, etc) as the connecting flights are either the same price or around 100 more, which is a deal.

I flew Sydney to Haneda only 2 weeks ago and I couldn't fault them as they kept us feed, the meals were fine, the Angus beef with veg and mash was tasty and well cooked, the later meal service of the Beef bulgogi was probably a little overcooked but still a good meal too.

There was a snack service before the meal with drinks; including Beer, Wine, Sparkling wine, a large selection of spirits including Smirnoff Vodka, Jack Daniel's, Beefeater Gin, Scotch, Juices, Soft Drink and this good new drink the Qantas Aviation spritz which had Gin and a few other things in it that made it great (Had a few).

Meal 1 (Another drink service too) had 2 meat and 1 veg option which came with foccaccia, cheese and crackers, Bulla ice cream later and Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and tim tams afterwards. Crew did pass through frequency offering water. During the meals we even ordered another Spritz and we got it quickly with Ice and Lemon, which if they were a half assed crew I doubt they would have bothered.

Second meal was 1 meat and 1 veg but was still a substantial meal with the same additions on the first meal except for no separate hot beverage service and no cheese and crackers. Dessert was a creme caramel. When we landed in Japan, we didn't need to eat until the Morning.

As someone who's travelled in JAL business recently for 2 long haul flights, that service can hold its head up high. Although I like the a330s seating layout they 300 series they do run to Tokyo are a bit long in the tooth and are starting to show their age, so it will be good then the a350-1000s or the 787-10s start doing the route (Although 787s have less seat width which can be a problem).

      My 2c

  • Hi OP, your hotel link is broken.

  • Is this the best option for brisbane? Since JAL and ANA don't fly direct from here?

    • JAL and ANA only fly into Australian cities. :p

    • Is this the best option for brisbane?

For a direct flight, probably. Jetstar is often cheaper, but many avoid Jetstar for good reason.

If you're okay with longer flights, Singapore Airlines is worth considering. If you're booking direct with the airline (recommended), then these sale prices are about the same as Singapore Airlines normal price, but you'll have 14+ hour flight times as the routes all fly into and out of Singapore.

Alternatively, you could consider buying a Virgin flight to Sydney, then flying SYD-Tokyo on one of the ANA/JAL deals that are published here on OzBargain. BNE-SYD return is about $160 if booked months in advance. The catch is that this is using two separate airlines, so if your BNE-SYD flight is delayed and you miss your international flight, insurance normally won't cover that.

China-based airlines are probably cheaper again, if you like those airlines.

I've flown both JQ and QF Brisbane to Japan.

        Reasons to go JQ:
        If you're going to Osaka
If you prefer 3-3-3 config vs 2-4-2
If you'll be transferring to another flight at NRT T3
        Prefer 787

        Reasons to go QF
        If you prefer 2-4-2
If you're ok with the food
If you'll be transferring to another flight at NRT T2
        Want the 30Kg free luggage

        Both:
Have bad food (QF a little better particularly snacks)
Take off and land similar times

But really, consider flying indirect via another Asian country and fly into, say Fukuoka / Sapporo / Nagoya and out of Tokyo / Osaka (or vice versa)

        • I believe Qantas gives you an inch more of legroom compared to Jetstar, when flying in economy.

  • -1

I just dont get all the QF hate. I've flown QF quite a bit, pretty much only international, and have never had an over the top horrible experience. Sure, my IFE last time was crap, the screen was dead on one side so i couldnt swipe right, but apart from that, no particular experience was horrible. Maybe my standards are horribly low? Haha

    • They are not "bad" if no frill is your thing.

Just that there are better options and usually cheaper.

Qantas as so so as an airline and Qantas fares are inflated with many paying with their corporate account. People fly QF whilst work pay so they get the "petty" status credit in J that otherwise they can't afford.

  • Are there ever any deals for like dec 21 right before christmas

    • +1

There will never be deals for Christmas time flights. Those tickets will sell at the higher cost 100% of the time.

  • +4

Just got back from Tokyo flying QF.

Luckily didn't have the issues above but definitely agree with the comments re flying with others as QF is just not competitive other than being a direct flight for some (e.g Brisbane) but even then Jetstar is a strong contender with newer and nicer aircraft.

The one thing I noticed has deteriorated significantly is food: horrible taste and texture, rice is like it's microwaved. My 3 year old wouldn't touch it and just ate the bread and cheese/crackers for lunch and dinner…

    • "Jetstar is a strong contender with newer and nicer aircraft."
      Spot on

    • A fussy 3 year old? Unbelievable!

  • +1

Positives of flying Qantas to Japan - daytime flights (if you don't like sleeping on planes), many non-stop options, A330 2-4-2 seating good for couples. Not much else of note.

    • If you are sitting in economy, the 2-4-2 layout really cant be beaten!

  • Well got tix ML to RJAA return, over ANA for a similar price cause direct, over JAL cause $250 cheaper, fingers crossed I don't have as bad experience as the comments, haven't flown QF (or internationally) in 15 years lol
