Which Car? Rough Time to Buy - Budget $60,000

Hi,

Keen to hear peoples thoughts on what car to buy at the moment, between wait times, technologies (electric), the shift to SUV's I feel it's a really odd time to be in the need of a car. I've always driven 'hot hatches', I've found that the balance of these provide the practicality and enjoyment that suit my lifestyle and needs. 85% of the time it's just me in the car, to and from work (that's not much highways) 10% of the time its +1 passenger and 5% of the time it's + 3 passengers.

I'm a little conscious that world is progressing to electric/hybrid powertrains but I personally feel that the options that exist in Australia are not worthy of going fully electric/PHEV yet, the lack of charging, excessive price tags (for range/performance) makes me hesitant to make the switch, even then, it appears a lot of this tech is going into larger cars, which I really don't have the need for.

As odd as this sounds; I find myself juggling between a Civic LX e:HEV vs a WRX rs manual; I KNOW they're two completely different types of cars and I think its a head/heart battle. I feel the rex lacks a bit on the tech/feature side, when you look at things like larger sunroof, digital dash, front sensors, rear air vents, but you do get the performance and high petrol use. On the other hand, the Civic is quite frugal, but dont think i'll have much enjoyment from its whiny CVT, its quite advance it its tech things like Honda Connect (Maybe gimmicky?)

First and foremost my key priorities are reliability and safety, I feel the Australian market has really killed off any decent options in the warm / hot hatch space, I feel items such as a Focus ST, Megane RS are completely gone, US models such as a Civic SI just dont exist….

I have test drove a i30n (manual), and personally felt that the vehicle was just 'always on', even when adjusting settings to be off and the harsh plastics just made it feel cheap. I did drive a 22 Focus ST and loved it, and a tad spewy (still till this day, that Ford culled my order) I felt this was a good balance between 'performance' and maturity.

Keen to hear peoples thoughts.
Ideally id like:

  • Manual (Don't really feel they exist much anymore)
  • New preferably.
  • 150-200KW
  • Sunroof
  • Tech, I like 'tech'.

Budget is approx. $60k which I feel is more than reasonable, although these days, it seems like a crap budget.

I feel I'd like to stay away from any Euro product as I don't feel the reliability is there.

Edit:
I just wanted to edit to assist in clarifying some of the questions raised in the comments section:

  • I have done my research…. a tad insulted with the comments that mention I haven't, hence why I provided the two comparisons
Focus range culled from Australia - https://www.drive.com.au/news/ford-focus-st-and-fiesta-st-ax…
Megane production finished - https://www.carscoops.com/2022/07/renault-megane-reportedly-… (yes… you can technically still get one for now, but not for long, also euro)
  • I do approx 10k - 15k kms per year
  • On the point of warranty my opinion, on a new car, even though there is warranty, trips to dealerships should NOT be required.
  • I've been very very privileged, I acknowledge that, and have been able to swap my cars regularly in the past and also drive various products through work. Dual Clutch transmissions any from any manufacturer, at low speeds frankly dont work well (at least ive found), I'm actually really disappointed that traditional torque converters are disappearing and can only be found in some manufacturers. Anywhooo Im ranting a little, Im now not in the same position and need this car to last at least 5-10 years.
  • The reason why I'm insistent on manual, is is I feel the engagement, as well as you being in control, what I mean by this is, there's one route in particular (near my home) where, in a traditional auto its 2>3>4>5(sometimes), as they're designed for efficiency within seconds im back in 2nd. The car doesn't know I'm about to slow again! I'm finding time and time again, autos cant make the prediction well…. (paddles dont help) - But I also acknowledge that in higher spec models, manuals dont exist (https://www.whichcar.com.au/advice/every-new-manual-you-can-…)
  • Why new? I just feel like buying used, id be going backwards…. I've had a new car in 2015, 18 and 22….. to go back at year a get a used car to me, doesn't make sense.
-On the elect front…… I'm not going to comment tooo much here, but this is personal opinion and circumstances (yes, maybe a little bit lack of research, and fear, i.e fires, replacement batteries, charging etc) and take it as you will.. and selfish as this sounds, I don't care about emissions as a factor when purchasing

Hopefully this helps apologies for poor English

On the HEV front I would ask this question on the Electric Vehicles for Australia Facebook group - it has 18k members and a very good mix of enthusiasts, skeptics, and autoengineers. I know you're not interested in EVs but it will bring you up to speed on the latest re batteries and fires regardless because there's a lot of decade-old misinfo out there these days.

Have a look at the Cupra hybrids (formentor for wagon - 180kW at around 64k)

  • Cupra born, RWD EV?

  • seeing e10 petrol is $2.30 i think if i was in the market for a new car, i would seriously consider the tesla model 3 base version (it just got updated) - $64,814 drive away
    https://www.tesla.com/en_au/model3/design#overview

    • lol where are you seeing e10 for $2.30?

      • most central to western suburbs cheapest ive seen is 2.20 to 2.30 depending on the day.

  • Tesla Model 3 or Honda Civc Type R

  • push $15k more and buy a Nissan Z :P (I forgot they are so expensive… sorry)

    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2023-nissan-z-z34-m…

But I would go give a Tesla Model 3 a drive. Its both interesting and dull at the same time, I hated the interior but rather liked how it drove.
Ended up in a cheaper secondhand station wagon because it was more practical and useful for me but everyones different!

    AU Falcon on gas

  • Very familiar with the MQB platform and a MK7.5 Golf R is excellent value for money. Stay on top of scheduled maintenance and keep an eye out for water pump/thermostat housing. The rest is pretty bullet proof. Lots of bolt on upgrades and ECU/TCU tuning options. You can leave it stock or run E85 flex tune on a bigger hybrid turbo. Results are high 300 to 400kw at 4 wheels. Lots of power and fun in a small package and affordable price point and faster than probably 99% of cars you'll come across.

    2019 Toyota Crown Hybrid
    https://www.carsales.com.au/cars/details/2019-toyota-crown-h…

Extremely powerful, fuel efficient, packed with features and very unique. I own the Majesta model before this one, don't regret it one bit.

    • I was under the impression that Toyota had stopped the sale of Toyota Crown here since 1990's. Are these imported directly from Japan? Can you take them to Toyota for service or you need to find an independent mechanic for it?

      • +1

Yes all the modern crowns here are imports. Service depends on the dealer, some don't want to touch it while others don't mind. It actually has more in common with lexus sharing the same engine/hybrid drivetrain as some local lexus models. I just use an independent along with my own research/sourcing of parts.

    • Nice car, but I've never own an import. How would one go about servicing this hybrid, and what about parts?

  • BYD ATTO 3 if you can take advantage of the tax benefit. Test drive before you poop on the idea

    • I think most concerns are about reliability, it has great features for what you pay for, but will it last?

  • My thoughts are that I share similar requirements to you, and have been very happy with my MY16 Polo GTI manual purchased when about 18 months old and 20k on the clock for $22k. I considered that to be a lot to spend on a car. Felt a bit excessive. $60k? Jeepers.

Sure, being a euro servicing might cost a bit more, but my car cost less than half your budget.

    • VW is on the low end of the euro cars, sometimes people who want to flex that they have a german, all they can afford is a VW.. not that any other german is anything to brag about, when it comes to luxury, lexus and genesis all the way

  • 60x AU Falcon's

Try go for an EV under a novated lease, the FBT exemption benefit is a really good deal.

    • Someone really needs to break down this for me. I dont understand leases, every time ive attempted to work it out, find myself paying 3x the cars value in 3 years for no reason, left with no car, and have to pay interest. If i've got the cash I dont understand why leasing is beneficial. Let alone an EV lease

  • Ford Falcon mate

  • It is nice to have this problem of choice. My suggestions won't meet all your criteria but cars that I instinctively considered

Nissan Z (Beyond your budget and low supply and probably won't have enough tech). Q60 has similar engine but not sold anymore and didn't have raving reviews with it's auto.

    MX5

BMW F20 LCI-2 M140 (or the 2 series equivalent) (most likely automatic available but maybe a few with manual and maybe not enough 'tech'), but having said that maybe test out various auto transmissions and see if they meet your criteria for response in flappy mode and also when dawdling around town. I'm impressed enough with the ZF8 speed in bmw but maybe it is also the software

BMW G20 330e - it has tech ie. probably a million interior RGB LED lights impress your social circle (and to appease the FanTec RBG ATX case in you), and LED instrument display but still has buttons (to appease the Cherry MX keyboard custom build in you). It has some 'EV' so keeps your social circle from asking you about buying a Model 3 because you drive long distances to regional areas. No dual clutch transmission. I bring this car up as I just saw this 2020 model (https://usedcars.bmw.com.au/details/2020-bmw-330e-m-sport/OA…)

Older Boxster,Cayman,718 - maybe old cars but I people who appreciate these cars probably don't lose sleep at night whentheir Spring Drive watch has less tech than the Apple Watch Ultra 2 Pro Max SE

    • I probably should have clarified what I mean by tech aye, RBG, 'Digital Dashes (at least the ones that replicate the analogue ones) are the most gimmicky crap. I guess by tech I mean the latest driver aids. :) But thanks

      • the G20 330e shoud have most of the drivng assistance and it has the Laserlights w/ auto dip and shaping. Plus auto parking plus the rear /front alert
That car may also have the 50 metre reverse/backtrack function

  • I think for you it's either the WRX or nothing in this market. It seems like you want small cars (Corolla) over city cars (Yaris); if you're insistent on brand new, non-EV, and able to seat 4, there's only 5 cars currently offered that meet your requirements near your budget:
    - Honda Civic Type R (over budget ~10K)
    - Toyota Corolla GR (over budget ~10K)
    - Subaru WRX
    - Hyundai i30n (you don't like it)
    - Renault Megane RS (on run out, and you don't want euro)

If you're willing to consider city cars there's a handful more options, most of which are compromised for more than one passenger:
    - Hyundai i20n
    - Fiat 695 (you don't want euro)
    - Toyota Yaris GR

My personal opinion is that if you're an manual/petrol car enthusiast, this is the time to consider used cars. Take this opportunity to buy something special and enjoy it before ICE vehicles become impractical. Buy something that was outside your budget to buy when new. Test drive everything you can and find something that really clicks with you.

    • Thank you. You get me. I think you're right… the used market

  • @Mintee
    Made a decision?
    .

    • Pretty close to one tbh. Depends if i can get a used car for the price I want, eying one off. And im just waiting some funds to come my way before making the jump but hopefully by the end of this week i should have more of a decision
