  • Not really worth it to me, but i'm digging the new ultra modern look.

  • +6

Eb are doing the 500gb with 2 x controllers and 2 games for $399

    • +10

Yep, fix your description OP. Personally I think the extra controller is better than MIB3 movie and HDMI cable.

  • what the??? I would rather just stick with the current slim model considering the first fat model had issues and this looks too small for efficient cooling to take place. I bet those ripples on the top of the model are for extra cooling actually and if they need a rippled design for extra cooling it can't be good.

    • +7

These newer models have a smaller die CPU/GPU and consume less power and produce far less heat of the original I very much doubt this model with have heat issues.

      • +4

sorry I scrolled down on my smartphone and hit neg :( nothing neg about your post.

    • -1

My Fat PS3 had no issues with heating and it used to live in a closed of entertainment unit. New Chipset get small which is why the units get small look at the lifecycle of the PS1 and PS2 in size.

      • -2

That's good but you'll find it gets warmer when switched on.

  • +16

They should be concentrating on ps4 instead of this. At this price it's a robbery, should be at least $199 by now.

    • Even though the PS4 & X720 aren't expected for over a year, I still agree.

    • You are paying for a new design!

      • +1

My PS3 has been hidden in my entertainment unit since I got it (free with my TV) I can barely remember how it looks LOL

  • Im not familiar with the new slim model, Is it as easy to switch out the hard drive like the first fat ps3? cause if so, i would just op for the 299 12gb version. Hopefully its just a 2.5 SATA HDD.

    • The 12gb version doesn't have a hard drive buy does have a hdd tray for you to install one, once the hard drive is installed the ssd hdd is disabled so information is all placed on one hdd (searching for information on 2 hdd's will draw slightly more power and slow things down).

Edit - I believe the largest practical hdd you can install is 500gig still and they cost ~$100, I may be wrong because it's virtually impossible to keep up with computer pricing.

      • +1

I'm running a 1tb drive in a slim model. 1.5tb didn't work, it can't format more than 1tb. At least on 3.55 firmware.

      • The 12gb model has probably got a 12gb SSD in it or some other memory storage. But you would only be able to fit one or two games on a drive that size.

  • -1

Don't you love how brilliant the guys and girls at Sony are; if your going to use an ssd then put at least a 64gb, 12 gig is like 4 games or 3 hours of play tv.

Although I do like the new look.

    • Atleast they are now releasing a budget version like the xbox arcade which has 4gb from memory

      • I know it's a budget version, but it's a budget version of a games console. Some ps3 games require several gig of pre installed content on your hdd meaning you have to constantly delete your games off a games console and re install them if you want to play.

        • +1

Some Xbox games need multiple discs meaning you have to get up and change the disc, its just a perk for those who cheap out.

        • +1

The difference is that some ps3 games CANNOT be played at all without a large install. There's probably games that wouldn't even fit.

        • Then pay for the bigger version, simple

      • +1

Budget in terms of specs but not price.

Is sony releasing a new version of the console soon (PS4)? PS3 has been around for a while now…

Rumour mill says Christmas 2013, so more than a year away.

      • -1

thanks… new Wii it is then…

        • +3

          lol.

          dunno if stupid or troll

        • Both :)

        • Both :)

  • Maybe he meant the WiiU?

The outcome of not implementing a 64GB or 128GB SSD is still unbelievable!

    • i dont think so…. it would jack up the price for minimal gain.

you can do it yourself if you want to anyway.

      • Does it mean people will then get the new version, discard the 500GB hdd, spend extra on getting a SDD for their own benefits?

What is your logic behind? If your logic is valid - then every laptop should still be using physical hdd rather than SSD, right?

Note that SSD is quite cheap these days ($100 for a decent 120GB compare to a 500GB 2.5 in which is around $80)

        • mate,

my ps3 runs perfectly fine on the normal hdd's… not many people see the benefits of SSD's like you might in a ps3.

  • Whilst it may not be the best looking ps3 I actually need another slimmer one because my fat boy does not fit alongside my Onkyo Amp in our new entertainment unit lol

    • +1

      first world problems… lol.

i hate when people say that.

Can't believe Sony is still trying to sell a $400 console one year before its successor.

    • +5

you should check the price of iphone4S as of today…

      • Apple is a completely different company. Sony doesn't have their marketing muscle. Apple can afford to price it at whatever they want. Hell, they could sell their excrement and all preorders will sell out in 24 hours.

The two products and companies can't be compared.

        • clearly you missed the point in your haste to post a fanboy comment

    • They were still selling PS2 units and games when PS3 was released as well

      • -1

Perhaps I should emphasize that it's not the console I'm surprised about, it's the price. $400 is a lot for what's about to be a last gen console. A year before the PS3, PS2 slims were under $200. I bought a PS2 slim in 2006 for $169 with a free game. 2007, the PS3 launched for $999.

        • +1

This includes another controller and a brand new big release title as well as LBP for $399 from EB. In essence around $180 of value as well as the console.

    • Honestly, what makes you think the PS4 is coming out soon? Just the simple fact that the PS3/360 are old?
Doesn't make sense to me, they're still unlocking the power of the console, still adding new features, plus the Wii U is just coming out to compete with the PS3/360 with it's equal amount of processing power. If anything we can assume another generation is far off.

I hope this means a sale on the current model
