    • Hook it up to PC via wireless. Seems the go, even with the Q2.

      • +1

Oh I didn't realise that was an option thanks for the info!

        • No problem, depending on your router / modem LAN wifi speed (local connection between local devices, not internet speed) you may need to upgrade that though.

          • @The One Demon: Might actually work out better as my router is in the lounge room that has a lot more space for VR than the bedroom where the PC is so I assume I could just hook it up and play next to the router and just wander back to the PC if I had to mess with settings there etc.

  • This is still too expensive considering the tech specs comparing other headsets (portable or not). The improvements over Quest 2 are small. It is a bum deal compared to Quest 2 pricing. It's not like there is an evolution in portable VR gaming that makes you want to purchase this. If you going to use it for PCVR, Quest 2 is still better value. Meta can go jump, the price will go down soon enough when they realise people in 2023 aren't going to rush out and buy this.

    • +2

Expensive compared to current Quest 2 but the improvements seem pretty substantial. Double the processing power, fully adjustable IPD (a return to Quest 1 feature), smaller and more comfortable with better weight distribution, higher resolution, better blacks, pancake lenses with larger sweet spot, wider FOV, full colour passthrough with much higher res, auto room mapping etc.

      • -1

That doesn’t sounds substantial in any sense…
Same LCD with a bit wider FOV, and a fraction bit higher resolution?

        • +1

pancake are a huge improvement, though OLED screens would have been worth this price

          • @Hatter: which OLED headset selling at $799 ?

        • +2

If a console or PC GPU were to get double the processing power would that not be a substantial upgrade?

The full colour higher res passthrough and 3D room mapping also opens up an entirely new avenue of AR gaming not really possible on Quest 2 (or at least very poorly done with low res black and white passthrough and no 3D mapping).

If someone's intended use was just as a PC headset, I can see how some of the new features are not worth a lot to them, but as a standalone device they are certainly substantial in my opinion.

          • @Gravy: Many of us play PC games on it.

            • +1

@John Doh: I realise that, I'm saying that if someone's primary/sole use is as a PC headset then any upgrades to the standalone features are going to be less important to those users.

            • @John Doh: For me the pancake lenses and better weight distribution, higher resolution and wifi 6e make it a better option for my PC rig than my current Quest2. With double the processing power and better standalone performance it means I can play some standalone games without being tethered, that's a small bonus but still useful. The faster chip and AV1 may mean better experience from the PC as well, but even if not, the other improvements are enough for me. Seriously considering the Bigscreen headset for flight sims though.

              • @Scrobo: I agree with all that, but bloddy there are no new good games like HL alyxx to make good use of it.

        • Same LCD with a fraction bit higher resolution is a new LCD.

          • @Morien: I think it is actually two individual LCD screens as well, as opposed to one on the Quest 2. Don't quote me on that one though. Resolution is a 30% bump if I read correctly.

            • @Gravy: Yes, two separate screens, which makes for better backlighting and better IPD adjustment and the resolution is a 30% increase which should reduce the screen door a bit and make text more readable.

  • +1

Just a couple of thoughts for those sitting on the fence, love my Quest 2, the FOV upgrade will make this an immense upgrade alone. https://www.uploadvr.com/quest-3-specs/

PS don't stress about the 512, just rotate the 3-5 big games you have on, go 128.
PPS game pass on Quest 3 seems like a good mix

    • Is it though? I have a PSVR2 and a Quest 2 which I exclusively use for PCVR. I actually prefer my Quest 2 via PC, more comfortable (with aftermarket strap) and less sensitive to screen door effect then PSVR2's lens. I don't feel the FOV is a massive upgrade on the PSVR2 which is the same as Quest 3, certainly not to warrant upgrading.

      • If you are not using the standalone features then the upgrade is perhaps not as important to you.

        • True but I would if the upgrades warrant using it as standalone. Better than the Quest 2 it is for sure, but the upgrades for the money is bad value compared to headset tech on the market. Quest 3 should really be a bit cheaper. It's a great headset at the 'right' price. $800 is hard to justify imo.

          • @Justin9mm: Yeah certainly a fair amount of difference in launch price between Quest 2 launch and Quest 3 (US$200 more expensive).

One thing that is more important for some people than others is the variable IPD. If your IPD falls outside the 3 fixed IPD positions of the Quest 2 then it makes the new model more attractive with variable IPD (yeah I know you can force IPD between positions but it's not the same).

            • @Gravy: Yeah they didn't think that one through on the Quest 2. The IPD was a very limited cheap design. I mean there are improvement features that hold more value to some that make the Quest 3 more attractive. I for one don't hold the same view. I would love to purchase the Quest 3 128GB @ $500 but not a dollar more lol

    • I thought there was barely any FOV upgrade, which is one of the main reasons this is a weird product.

      • I think it's an extra 10 degrees, but with the lenses able to get closer to your eyes, it will vary from person to person.

    • Is that MS's game pass or Meta's?

  • +3

This is not really a bargain - this is akin to “buy a perfume at RRP and get a free bag” type deal

    • It's always the way because they are testing the waters with the market, when they don't get the sales they want, price will drop pretty quickly. I personally wouldn't pay more than $499 for the 128Gb model. When that happens, I will buy it.

  • Can you watch movies or stream Kayo on something like this? Using it as a TV is my only use case as I'm not a gamer. I love the idea of an immersive movie experience wherever I am.

    • You would probably want to invest in a good aftermarket strap, I'm sure they have improved over Quest 2 standard one but it's probably the most important investment for comfortability. Especially if you are going to sit and use it as a TV screen. You can watch movies, not sure about streaming though.

    • Yes you can, and you can also watch 3D movies which look great. If you have the money though, the bigscreen beyond is tiny, high resolution and OLED. The best option by a country mile for movies.https://www.bigscreenvr.com

      • Oh wow that looks great! Thanks, I will look into that more!

        • Kayo is not an available add-on last I checked. Movies, are fine if you have your own movies or rent them online.
In reality (for me at least), watching a 2 hour movie via headset isn't the most comfortable even with a aftermarket strap. I suspect Oculus 3 with better the lenses and res would be more comfortable especially on the eyes compared to the Oculus 2.

  • +3

Can anyone comment on this as a pure tethered PCVR option?

I've read that there is horrible latency compared to, e.g. Index and Reverb G2 even when using the cable for this thing, and that even when tethered it uses significant amounts of video compression?

God I wish Sony would stop being lame and just release PC drivers for the PSVR2. They would sell like hotcakes if they did that.

    • +2

With a dedicated Wifi 6 Router (no other devices connected to the router) in close proximity and a good PC, I had no latency when using AirLink on my Quest 2, Quest 3 should handle the latency even better I would assume given the increased performance. I don't bother with tethered anymore since going Airlink.

      • +1

I can't see how wifi could possibly have anything like the latency numbers of directly going to DisplayPort like and Index, though? There would have to be some extra?

The whole wifi thing is pretty unattractive for someone like me who doesn't have a hard-wired PC. If you plug the USB cable in does it work the same way, just over the wire?

        • +1

A direct connection like the Index's DisplayPort might provide lower latency. But with the advancements in wireless tech, this difference is often negligible in practice. Oculus has optimised AirLink on Quest devices to minimise latency and enhance responsiveness. When using a USB cable, the Quest acts as a tethered PCVR, potentially with less latency than AirLink. However, some compression remains in visual quality.

I personally place great value on the freedom from physical tethers in VR, especially when the lag is barely noticeable.

          • @MalamuteMayhem: I'm the same, I also have a PSVR2 and my Quest 2 via PCVR over WIFI 6 is a much nicer experience.

          • @MalamuteMayhem: Plus the Q3 supports wifi6e so it should be good.

        • +2

@MalamuteMayhem is right! I personally use my Quest 2 exclusively for PCVR via Airlink / Virtual Desktop with my WIFI 6(router and PC). I have no real discernible difference between cable and WIFI 6. It is important though that you have the right setup. Good internet speed, proper WIFI 6 and great signal to router etc. I think a lot of people who have issues probably don't have the right setup. I would assume Quest 3 would be just as good experience.

          • @Justin9mm: I agree. Many people probably don't have a dedicated WiFi 6 router for VR that's close by, and that's a key factor. I purchased the ASUS RT-AX55 (Currently $123 on Amazon AU). When you think about a long USB cable costing about $40, the extra $80 to go wireless is definitely worth it.

            • +1

@MalamuteMayhem: I have the ASUS TUF Gaming AX3000 which I think is virtually the gaming version of yours. Maybe the secret sauce is our router lol. It just works!

            • @MalamuteMayhem: I guess to me the issue with this is that if you have to set up a "dedicated Wifi 6 router for VR that's close by" then that's actually a significant inconvenience in many cases. Typically if you're using wifi it's because you can't conveniently cable your PC to the router, so the router is not going to be close by or necessarily have fantastic signal right where you/your PC are.

Everything I've read also suggests that PC->wifi->router->wifi->Quest is not a good setup.

It's a little disappointing that Meta haven't gone with a best of both worlds approach here. The hardware looks good, why not give the option of a decent PC tether cable that maximises bandwidth and minimises latency? Then they capture two markets in one.

              • @caitsith01: No one has tested the Q3 cabled yet, so we will have to wait and see,

    • And give MS a free hit? hardly..

      • That's definitely the Sony mentality. When in fact they would sell a crapload of hardware at a decent mark up and also build a much bigger base of people who can access VR games on PS5 (because a lot of people, like me, would probably buy the PSVR2 if it was dual use).

    • +1

PCVR was absolutely fine for me with wifi

Tethered was worth the hassle (tried both options)

      • Sorry, it WAS worth the hassle, as in, it was noticeably better?

        • my bad, "wasnt" worth the hassle. i returned the cable to amazon.

the image quality and latency was the same, but the cable had the additional annoyance of being in the way.

i just made sure nothing was connected to my 5G channel for my router. used an Xiaomi AX1800.

    • Sony would stop being lame and just release PC drivers for the PSVR2

Why would they… With Microsoft locking down bethesda all for themselves, I don't see a reason for this.

  • I want to buy this as a gift for my nephew in US. Will this work with 110v ?

    • +2

Might as well purchase direct from USA and receive the correc power brick. As it's USB Charging, voltage conversion shouldn't be an issue with a device like this. Just needs the right powerbrick / adapter

  • It says "Est. delivery: Fri, 13 Oct". Is it the arrival date?

    • The estimated arrival date, yeah.

    • october 10 is the official release date.
So october 13th for arrival makes sense :)

  • +1

Note: Once you are no longer a paying Meta Quest+ subscriber, you will lose access to all previously redeemed Meta Quest+ titles and not be able to redeem any more titles. When you resubscribe, you will regain access to all previously redeemed Meta Quest+ titles and the titles that are currently available for as long as you are a subscriber.

    • +2

Yep that’s pretty much how subscription works.

      • +1

Except it doesn't for many gaming services. For example if you subscribe to Prime Gaming you can claim the free games and keep them forever even if you cancel your subscription.

  • I’d rather order from Amazon for ease of returns. Seems only the 128gb is up for order there.

Has anyone seen any good impressions that compare it directly against the QPro over Q2?

    • The pancake lens are the biggest upgrade, only real reason to buy Q3 or Pro

      • Yeah, but I'm deciding between the Q3 or Pro. All the impressions I've seen have been about Q3 being better than Q2.

    • +3

It's up. The 512GB is on Amazon. Just search Meta Quest 3. Actually $10 cheaper. $1039.99

      • +1

        Hey, it is now! Thanks!

      • Yeah. On amazon it says "Headset only" but on the left shows controllers too?

        • Yes…..as there are available bundles i.e. with optional accessories eg. Elite strap, Elite strap with battery, Face cover, etc. The "Headset Only" is just the Oculus 3 (which incl controllers).
Am not seeing the bundles there today….or perhaps I viewed a different Amazon link yesterday?

    • I ordered my Quest 2 from Meta and they even replaced it out of warranty when it had an issue.

      • I'm after change of mind returns. Something like this, I don't want to take the punt on the wrong headset.

    • Check out the hands on review on tested. It's the best review so far and compares directly to the Pro. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WUbtyCljnjE

  • +1

Launch price of a new product is not a bargain.

  • +3

John Carmack made an amazing product with Quest 2.
and now Zuck and FB has f**ked it up, with overpriced QPro and jacking up the price of the Q2. This cost more then a PS5, and you will not get more than 3yr before meta drops support.

    $200 for head strap
    $100 for USB cable
    And still no eye tracking

    • -1

Plus you need a powerful computer connected to it yeah? It's not a cheap hobby if you don't already have that PC.

      • quest 2 had both options you could be completely mobile with out a PC or you could use it as a good PC headset.

        • +1

Q3 has a pretty decent mobile processor, that how meta makes most of it money off the quest store.

    • +1

agreed its not the value for money quest any more. Meta did screw up Oculus when they took over.

the last good PC value for money vr headset is still the Quest 2.

  • Told my son he could get one for Christmas if he saved up half, reckon a 9 year old would get much benefit of a 3 over a 2? Was thinking of waiting until the 3 becoming available hoping for the 2 to go on special but with the colour passthrough maybe a 3 would be a better choice?

    • +2

The main thing here is the better quality pass through video.

If you think him having a better sense of his surroundings is important than yeah the 3 is recommended.

      • What is quality pass through ? Neewbie

        • Quest 3 has full colour cameras that allow you to see the outside world whilst wearing the device, this allows for augmented reality (AR) games that can be superimposed over the top of the real world view and includes the ability to map your room in 3D through depth sensors. This mapping then allows objects in the game to be "aware" of the real environment and hide/be obscured behind real couches etc.

Quest 2 has pass through cameras but they are black and white and low resolution, so not very suitable for AR games.

          • @Gravy: You can buy my pretty much unused 2nd Quest 2 headset if you like. Used for about an hour :)

    • At 9, no.
There should be a price dip with the Quest 2 coming after launch. At least thats what they said.
The quest 3 is better in basically every way, but a 9yr old isn't going to get much from the extra cost.

      Here's a spec comparison
      https://i.imgur.com/45VtRT5.png

Consider the quest 3 a middle ground between quest 2 and quest pro, rather than a replacement for the quest 2.

    • though only 2-3 games that make use of the Mix VR

      • That will likely change with the improvement to the camera though right?

        • for sure, but will have to wait sometime next yr to see them.

      • It’s not mixed VR you’d be interested in for a child.

You can double tap the side of the headset to instantly see through the screen to your room.

This could be very important for a parent.

  • +1

    RRP ain't a bargain

  • If they made the front plate black then it would at least look more like goggles instead of a scifi helmet from Dead Space.

  • I have a quest 2 with with elite strap with battery, and I have a VR cover Facial Interface & Foam Replacement. I got it though when it was still called Oculus quest. Not sure if I really want to spend 800 bucks for a new headset that doesn't have a elite strap with battery option. I love playing wirelessly on my PC with wifi 6 though with all my steam vr games. Don't know if I will upgrade to a quest 3 or not.

    • All of my optional Quest accessories are Chinese-brand generics from AliExpress and eBay. The headstrap only cost me $40 (as opposed to the genuine article which is over twice the price)

You can save quite a bit of money purchasing the generics over the Meta-branded accessories and in some cases 3rd party alternatives can be better quality than 1st party.

      • I have had the oculus quest 1 and 2 and I have always got the genuine oculus accessories like the elite strap with battery (this accessory was the only one out there that had a built in battery that gave you an extra 3 hours), and for facial interface I always get VR cover because they make the best facial interfaces never had an issue with those.
I never go for the chinese brands.

        • I’m curious about compatibility with the strap and case for the quest 2 with 3

          • @Elijha: yep from the youtube videos I have seen today none of the quest 2 straps are compatable. Some companies are releasing adapters though so be good to see how that goes.

            • @kungfuman: Crazy of me to hope that adjustable head strap connectors would be kept the same. .. I bet they flipped the charing port to the other side to just to ensure they break compatibility with battery expansion (havn't checked but that my expectation).

              • @Elijha: its the same story with the first quest lol they always change it so you can't use the old stuff with it. lol But they did make alot of adapters even made a HTC adapter to use there headset. someone will work it out with a 3d printer too

  • RRP is not a bargain…

    • its double the price from the quest 2 as well lol the only good thing about it is you get a free full version game with it.

      • +1

        It isn’t double.

There are also multiple new and better features.

I downvoted as this isn’t a deal but you are kidding yourself if you don’t see the big upgrade here.

        • +1

true it is a decent upgrade especially with those pancake lenes, but it still just a $600 android phone.

the eye tracking and OLED screen would have been well worth the price.

          • @Hatter: It also includes 2 controllers. If you consider people pay $100-150 for phone attachment controllers you can see how the price here is about right.
