What Has Been Your Highest Lotto or Pokie Win?

With the new lottery office giving access to overseas powerballs and lottos have been wondering what has been your highest win?

For me I still remember winning $100 at the local club but to this day I feel like my family set it up just to make me happy that day on my 18th bday.

since then i dont think i have ever won over $55.

lifes too dull so i took a punt at the us lotteries

what would you do with a billion dollars lol

all i can think of is food and maybe hiring some help around the house

what a life ay

    Not lotto but…

    10$ to $2100 = NBA multi bets.

I think I gave that winning back to them for keep trying to win again + more $$$ lol.

  • +5

$1 in the slots, took back $57.

This was back when you’d get coins back from the machine rather than a voucher. I think my first play got me to like $1.50, so I cashed out the $1 to break even and kept playing.

  • +35

Biggest win was at a pokies.

    30 dollars.

    Spend 60

    • Wouldn't that make it a $30 loss?

      • +46

        An astute observation.

  • +2

I'm an adherent to the notion of the secret millionaire. No one will ever find out…

  • +54

the winners are the ones that don't gamble :P

    • +3

but you gotta be in it to win it!

      • +16

One of the greatest myths of gambling.

        • +11

How can you win it without being in it? It's not a myth at all.

          • @AustriaBargain: .
            Maybe you're just a loser? 🚷

          • +4

@AustriaBargain: With any gambling the odds are stacked against you. People get sucked in by this "gotta be in it to win it" nonsense, the old "sense of urgency or fear of missing out rubbish that advertising peddles. People buy into the dream and end up addicted. The real winners are those that steer clear of gambling, or can control the urge to the odd flutter now and again.

I am not anti-gambling. As you will see below I have been buying Saturday Tattlslotto tickets since it started back in the early 1970s. Sure, I'd love to be rich, but I only ever risk a minimal amount, e.g. less than the price of a cup of coffee per week. If the universe decides one day it is my turn to win, so be it. But I ain't gonna lose any sleep over it not happening.

It is your choice to do what you like, and I am not denying you that choice. You're presumably an adult who can make logical decisions based on your own circumstances.

            • +9

@johninmelb: Right, but the statement "you have to be in it to win it" is not a myth. The odds of winning it may be near impossible, but that doesn't make the statement untrue.

        • I agree, the saying should be more like
"gotto be in it, to lose it"

Since the odds are against u, the less you're in it, the more u dont lose, hence the more u win?

  • +2

Far better odds of you dropping dead in the next year.

    • +6

      Life insurance baby

    • Not true. Dropping dead in the next 0.00001 seconds.

    • +1

      I wish 😫

Lotto Winnings $0 Spent ~$100 overall
Pokies Winnings $0 Spent <$5 overall
Casino highest winnings $40 Spent ~$400 overall
SportsBet won $60 picking Hottest 100 winner. Added $50 to my account years ago and it's always hovering around $20-30 because I make 25c - $1 bets occasionally.

Unless you're good at poker, gambling isn't a good way to make money. Never chase losses.

  • +9

    All gambling paid $0
    won $0

    100% return, 0% loss

    • i think this makes you a really good financial advisor you know when to not participate

  • +23

The only thing I ever won was free paddle pop in the paddle pop stick promos in the mid 90's

    • +14

As a 12ish yr old back then, i had a streak of about 4 free paddlepops from just the 1 purchase. A well earnt delicious stomach ache.

    • +2

I never even won that! I remember i used to furiously lick the last bit off the stick!

    • +5

I ate a full 24x box of Crunchies with "1 in 4 wins" winning wrappers at work once :')

    • +4

I remember chance to win free mars bars.
Could shine your phone light, or angle it towards the sun, and see the winners through the wrapper.
I had won like 3 in a row before I felt I was scamming them - a friend picked up like 8 😆 Good times!

      • Whether you win or someone else wins, it’s net 0 against the planned wins by the company. I wouldn’t have felt too bad, except to the next person going through the box.

  • +4

I bet on Biden to win the last US election at 26:1 and won $520. That was a no brainer bet though, it was after he lost the first 3 primaries but was sure to sweep most of the rest.

I won $50 on a scratchy once, my grandma bought them for me every birthday. That was back in the early 90s so $50 went a long way with an 8 year old.

    • that kid must've felt like a prince!!!

  • +10

    Pokies - $5,023.

I was 19 at the time, went to RSL to wait for a few mates, prior to that day I had maybe at the most put $20 in the pokies at a time.

$20 went, $50 went, $100 went, before I knew it I was maybe $500 down, then just got angry, and bets went from 1c per line to 50c(?) and max lines so that's a fiver every push of the button. After about 40mins I was $5,000 down.

Took the last $20 from my account, and on the very last spin, won the mini jackpot of $5,023.

I immdiately cashed out, bought a schooner for $3, and went home.

Have touched a machine less than a handful of times 18yrs later and never more than a fiver at a time.

    • +3

Bloody hell the dopamine hit/ euphoria of the win would have been crazy? I’d be chasing that high for the rest of my life.

      • +10

Losing $5k at 20 feels like losing $50k now, I think I blanked out with blinding rage as I don't have any recollection what happened between losing the first $500 to drawing the last $20, it was a blur.

My mates were all running late so I never even saw them that night, after the schooner I just went home and crashed, woke up with the $5,020 cheque from the RSL confirming it really did happen. A ridiculous experience that I certainly don't ever want again!

        • Love this!

  • +21

About $80 a few weeks ago on Powerball.

I dont play to win, I just pay to fantasize for a few days prior to the draw. Worth the $20.

    • Why not just buy one ticket at 5

      • I do the Powerhit, guaranteed that I get the Powerball.

        • Those powerhits start to stack up quick hey…

Now I’m just a bitter jaded old man with a stack of loser tickets :(

          • @Jimothy Wongingtons: won $1100 from a Powerhit back in April

          • +1

@Jimothy Wongingtons: I only do it when the powerball is over $40m. So maybe once every two months.

            • -1

@nedski: That is the way.. TIL or relearnt about the powerhit i might give it a go on the next one.

This latelst powerball I just did 2 standard games getting lazy and also brain is so burnt out from other stuff I just blitzed it this time round without thinking.

The new opportunity with the US lotto now being a thing has made me increase my fantasies a whole lot more now.

Saw the article of that guy who won big and I was like this guy could be me .

      • I go with this, buying the smallest ticket instead of no ticket. Statistically I go from 0% chance of winning and 0 fantasies of winning to 0.00000297% and 1 fantasy. Both an infinite increase.

Spending 4 times as much gets me 4 times the chance of winning and 0 extra fantasies. 4 and 0 are a lot less than infinity.

        • Same amount of odds, to find a winning lottery ticket lost on the ground

  • My mate won 65k at The Brisbane casino was a good weekend ha

    • +2

Jeeeeez, how ir|responsible was he afterwards?

    • wow what was that on slots blackjack roulette craps?

      • On the pokies $10 spins one of the dragon linked ones

  • +7

atleast 100k by just putting what you would gambling into an index fund and letting it compound

  • Nothing over $35 yet but I am still hopeful I will win a big prize soon.
I'd buy a new house and a new car.
A billion dollars? I would retire and share it with my family.

    • Yep honestly the little punt every week gives me enough excitement and enjoyment to keep playing.

I don't really have much expenses or hobbies besides pc gaming so all the excess stuff can go to things like this.

Food is really my only expense besides rent and bills.

I tell myself I would move near to either a kfc or my local chinese place because they don't deliver but my god their food is amazing.

  • High reward, higher chances of you losing.

win/money & success ratio for me in order:
    1. Sportsbet (have been mostly successful)
    2. Pokies
    3. Lotto

  • +4

I've never won more than $60 on Powerball.

My first job as a fish and chip shop kitchenhand saw the cook win $850k, he bailed to pay off his house/travel the world., they couldn't find a replacement (he worked 6 day weeks) and the family business of 40 years had to close.

    • +2

Yeah I have heard stories from coworkers of past coworkers winning big in lotto they never said exactly how much but i think it was the jackpot aka 1 million plus and same story they just bailed and basically relocated and retired.

Honestly stories like this and my local chinese food place are some of the only things that keep me going.

Good luck to you mate. Good luck to us both.

  • $8,200 on pokies feature. Twice in a month.
Biggest win on lotto has only been $6!

  • Biggest lotto win would probably be $30 or so. Definitely keeping my day job.
I only buy every second month or so for the off chance of striking gold anyway.
    No gambling or betting otherwise.

  • +3

$10k on a $1 Pokie. Won some mega jackpot
Spent $1k on a steak dinner that night

    • Ohh what restaurant, Rockpool ?

      • +1

Yep.. in hindsight, was stupid. But was a good meal

        • At least you got to keep slightly more than 87%

        • sounds like you were in the heat of the moment but i am easy and simple going

no matter if i win $100 or $100 million I am still going to kfc or the local yum cha

i might order a bit more that's all

  • I placed a $1 bet. I won $13.50.

2022 World Cup Final: Argentina vs France.

Bet: Draw that is not 0-0 or 1-1.

Four of us in a work syndicate won $6000 in Tattslotto way back in the early days (1972). $1500 each. I had a trip to London - the return economy class airfare was $700!!

Have played lotto almost every week (4 games) ever since it started, but that was the one and only big prize. Had quite a few minor prizes over the years.

Poker machines bore me stupid, so I don't go near them, and I have no interest in casinos. I used to dabble with the gee-gees a long time ago, but never more than a few 50 cent bets at the TAB now and again. Won $80 at the races one day, and never went again. One go at the tin dish lickers was enough to know that was a mug's game. Apologies to all the aficionados of the Dapto dogs :-)

The biggest gamble I ever took was buying a house and watching mortgage rates rise to 18%. I really struggled, but I own my house. That's my biggest win.

    • Really great story and thanks for sharing I appreciate it.

Yeah I understand this is a possibility to just play lotto for the next 50 years and never get more than $100 again but having that one in a million chance is well drool worthy.

Congrats on the house that is I am sure a big dream among many of us who know we will always be struggling.

    • They had planes back then?

      • Yeah, they did strangely enough. It was an almost brand new Boeing 747, and Qantas had only just started flying the 747's a year before in September 1971. Because it was so big and heavy, I never thought the thing would get off the ground as we hurtled down the full length of the runway at Tulla.

  • $400 Cash 3 a few years ago.
But in the 80s my parents won 150,000DM in the German lotto. Used it to move to Australia and buy a house and 2 cars and start their family bakery. And then dad effed off with the money and left mum and I by ourselves.

    • sad to hear it man

according to chatgpt that 150,000 DM in 1985 is worth about 122k AUD in 2023

not sure how accurate this is but

    • +1

Your Dad sounds like a pumpernickel

      • Yup. Actually it was 400k. I just happen to find a photocopy of the cheque in mums belongings. She passed away 3 years ago to leukaemia.
Not sure how to post an image.

  • Not me but I was with a mate when he hit the grand jackpot of about $25k. Good on him that he hasn't fallen for the dopamine hit chase and only plays the odd $20 once in a while if we have a big outing.

    • +3

sounds like a good mate very grounded

      I am the same

if I win i would just help mates out and order the occasional luxury food more often i pretty much have everything i want.. might just lvl up a few things like new bed maybe new pc thats it

drugs never interested me but i still fall for food

We won Div 2 in a Big Saturday draw in 1998. It was the lowest Div 2 payout of the year - approx. $5200. For us, it was just enough to replace the broken refrigerator and go to New Zealand and be there for my In-laws Golden Wedding Anniversary. It was the family together for the first time in 14 years and our 11 year old met his 2 cousins for the first time. We definitely could not have afforded that without the win.

I've had minor wins over the years, the biggest being $120. I don't regularly play. I have organised a couple of work syndicates and one of those used to pay a bit. It was a system: each member chose a number. So when we won , we would win say 7 X Div 6 or whatever and that mounted up. I know the last win took the group out to lunch and each got some cash as well. We were all uni students so it was welcome.

  • $10,000 Ozlotto about 15 years ago.

  • My Dad and workmate won $500.000 on the soccer pools in 1977…

    • (profanity), that's like 10 big Sydney investment properties back then. Your dad must be loaded now.

      • yeah i think my grandparents got their house in 1980s for like 60k or something like that

  • +1

Officially, the chance of winning first prize in tattslotto is around 1:8,000,000. Someone once worked out that’s the same as laying every bought ticket end to end from Adelaide to Perth and then randomly picking up one ticket.
Nonetheless, each week there is usually at least one winner - and no one has ever won without a ticket.

  • +3

I bought a lotto ticket last year when Powerball got to like 600 million or whatever. Didn't win, regretted it. But it was fun thinking maybe the cosmos will cut me a break and give me a few hundred million dollars. I could use it to finally get revenge on all my enemies.

    • +1

Highest it's ever gone was 150 million. The US megamillions can rise to over 1 billion though.

      • +6

150 million, 600 million, it would equally change my life and never would have happened anyway.

      • +2

The US megamillions can rise to over 1 billion though.

Take the cash upfront option and you'll only get $500 million before taxes.

Federal taxes will then be up to 37% plus depending on where you live you'll also need to pay state taxes of up to 11%

Our tax free lottery winnings are kind of comparable to an American billion dollar jackpot.

    • Revenge on all my enemies hahahahah
      So good
      Can relate

  • I got 5 out of 6 in the early 90's and won about $900. Noone won the jackpot

I reguraly win small amounts. Powerball 2 weeks ago I got $191 in 2 divisions. Last week I got $20
Most I ever play is 18 games but usually 12 in lotto and powerball

About a 40% win to 60% loss rate when i do lotto or powerball

  • +2

My mates old man used to play the same numbers in lotto every week back in the early 80s. First prize was half a million back then. One week he got drunk and couldn't remember if he had put his numbers in that week so put his numbers in again. Won the first division that week along with 3 other people so pocketed $200,000 instead of $100,000. Crazy good luck.

    • +2

Great story. I guess he won it twice.

FYI- he would have won $125k without the second win.

      • +1

I used to be better at maths.

  • +8

I won a Maccas Monopoly small fries.

    • The real win

  • +4

8 million on the powerball. I bought a house and a car but that's it, still have over 7 million and no idea what to do.

    • Buy 0.01% of X.

    • Time to talk to a financial advisor….

    • Obviously buy more powerball you obviously have a good luck streak going.
