    Check out the reviews

They are both owned by Wooloworths so i assume they know of the price, they have been at $55 for about 3 weeks just didn't have time to post it.

    • +1

I love this Dan Murphy's review. "It's like a bearhug in a glass"

  • -5

    What is the use-by date?

    • +1

LMAO it's single malt almost impossible to go off

    • +34

      What is the use-by date?

      Way beyond yours…

    • It's 16yo scotch, and you think it has a use-by date?

    • +1

Unopened, it can be stored away for many (dozens) more years without changing chemically.

Once opened, you still have a long while; but I suggest that once it's 1/3 empty, you have ~6 months before it becomes noticeably different from the whisky you purchased.

  • no one has it in stock !!! :(

    • +5

Mill Park BWS has 1 in stock. I suggest no one buy it and get dan murphys to call them and price match

      • +1

Great idea! , please everyone do this!!

      • was just about to go to mill park bws.. lol

      • +1

anyone have any luck price matching at Dan's/1st choice?

  • +1

Price at Lindfield NSW is $110

  • I recon Dan Murphy had these in the $88-100 range. Nice drop.

    • $87.99

  • +1

    $110 in WA too :-(

  • +1

Seems to be a lack of stock, called 7 stores around me and none of them had stock. I'm not going to travel any further than that to get some. One of the stores mentioned safeway liquor is now BWS and I rang my local, he said they never stocked it and it was a BWS only line.

edit: im in eastern suburbs melb

  • Just rang most in the northern suburbs.
It was on sale for a month or so, none left discontinued.

none in SA CBD. Just called them up and the price is $117. Dont think it would apply for SA. What a good deal!

  • None in Lavington BWS although did buy Chivas Royal Salute Scotch Whisky 700ml half price for $132.50

    Is this a good buy?

    • Great scotch but not half price @ $132.50

    • Yes, it's a good buy!

    • LOL I was at same BWS 1hr ago !

Royal Salute is ok at that price but it's no single malt the lagvulin at full price is a better in my opionon

      • +1

We really need an official Ozbargain uniform

    • I bought the royal salute in Japan for $100 and felt a bit ripped off after I tasted it. None of the blended whiskeys taste as good as single malts to me.

  • Went down to my local bws and had a look, no stock at all.

I was looking around and asking for single malts when the cashier mentioned some other one was on special. Turned out to be laphroaig 10 y.

Snapped the last 2 for $46 each, so it may help to just browse your local bws and see what they may have.

    • Laphroaig 10 year old for $46 is way below duty free price. Nice score.

  • This is a clearance folks. They're getting rid of them because no one over there buys good single malt scotch. :/

  • +2

I love scotch, but cannot fathom how people enjoy strong, peaty Islay malts. Don't flame me, I'm really trying to understand what it is people enjoy about them. Are there any non-smokers here that enjoy them? Perhaps smoking gets you used to the smokey taste? Fire away!

    • +1

This is weak to medium. You want strong go Ardberg.

I actually like the flavour. Especially when you get the iodine hit with it. It's nice. I also like smoother scotches and choose depending on mood.

    • Mmmm having tasted few islay scotches, and after having bought this and trying it. I am inclined to agree, it is quite smokey, and it lasts throughout the experience, not just as an aftertaste.
I'm sure it is excellent to some, but I much prefer a smoother, fresher scotch.

      • what would be a smoother fresher scotch?

        • Glen Moray is an ideal "bright" single malt without smokiness, and the 8 year old version is at a good price for a daily drinker. The 12 year old is obviously more expensive, but with a smoother, deeper flavour, with more pronounced vanilla tones.

I think smell appreciation is about building an association.

I couldn't stand the smell of peated whisky for ages, because all I couldsmell was hospital disinfectant. Then I went to a mates house and made a few pizzas in their wood-fired oven. When I smelled the smoke on my clothes afterwards I instantly remembered sitting at a campfire as a kid. It wasn't the soft smoke you get from fruit trees, but that harsh nose-burning smoke you get when you burn redgum or other high-resin wood. Then the next time I had a sip of an Islay whisky I drew that connection again, and it was a positive memory.

After that I no longer found the initial smoky hit off-putting and was able to get the more complex notes. After your brain learns to stop being shocked at the smoky smell you start to develop a taste for it. Within a few months of that revelation I was able to enjoy an Octomore - pretty much the peatiest whisky you can get. With a little water I could go through the smoke and smell a that kelp-like iodine smell and even a touch of dark chocolate at the end.

This is so cheap, it would make an ideal mixer with Coke!

    • +2

This is the most hilarious thing I'm going to read today

    • +4

I have seen people mix JW Blue with coke. :)

      • +1

Nixon used to mix JW Blue with ginger ale. I'd rather drink the lagavulin over a JW Blue anyway… seriously overpriced whisky in my opinion.

        • +1

Agreed. I think I'm a single malt kinda panda. I have several varieties of them at home and no blends.

        • +1

Totally agree'd. JW in all its forms is WAY overate. Although their double black is pretty decent.

Every scotch lover should have this in their collection IMHO: http://danmurphys.com.au/product/DM_84910/
I reckon its the best value scotch going around.

    • I neg'ed your sacrilegious comment. Shame! Shame!

  • Wow what an awesome deal.

For VIC customers, I work at a BWS and have checked the stock levels of other stores. Moe has 1 bottle, Mill Park has 1 bottle and Carrum Downs has 2. NO other stores will have stock as far as I'm aware. These stock levels should be accurate as of this morning, but it is known to be wrong sometimes. As far as I can tell, a lot of stores never stocked this item (mine for sure didn't)

Basically it would have been a deleted (no longer stocked) item which drops in price 10% every two weeks till it hits half price. It pays to walk into your BWS once a month and find out what they have on the deleted list (they are store specific a lot of the time)

    • Could you check the stock levels for QLD?

      • LOL!

    • +1

Rang Carrum Downs and there was someone just purchasing the last bottle……..Cheers to you, you lucky bugger

      • +1

        Lol. That was me. Cheers

    • +1

Just got the last one at Carrum Downs. Some one else rang on the phone while I was there asking for it

Come on, how about posting some of these deleted specials…

      • +2

That means telling you which store I work at… I'd rather not do that in case someone from Woolies isn't all too happy about it.

        • Why wouldn't they be happy about making more sales ?

    • Mill Park sold its bottle today so none left there

  • -1

Is this better then JW red label?

    • +1

slightly… it depends on the type of Cola you mix with it.

      • +2

        Red = Home Brand Cola
        Green = LA Ice
        Blue = Pepsi

King George V = Coca Cola. Only the best.

        • +1

          Gold = dr pepper :P

        • +2

          Yeah, dont ruin coke!

  • This doesn't show up anywhere on Boozle at this price :( Not even Melbourne

    • double boozle will show clearance stock, just advertised sales.

With Ozbargain, I seem to be buying Whiskey faster than I am drinking it. This is a…. happy problem.

Well, send them my way. We had no problems finishing 5 XO and 2 Chivas on Fathers' Day! We need some more for the footy tomorrow!

  • couldnt find this around at some SE MElbourne suburban stores… but i got Dan murphys to price beat … got it for $54… damn fine price for a good whiskey.

Gentlemen, try harder with price matching :)

    http://imgur.com/a/j4ARH

    • +1

where did you price match with? or did you just dodge the 'competitor must have stock' clause? keen as custard to get my hands on a bottle for post thesis celebrations…

      • +1

yer also interested in how this price match was done with the competitor stock being basically gone.

        • +3

Same way, I'm betting, that ppl got an OW pricematch on the WD USB HD from amazon: clueless staff

        • -2

Yer that or they have mates working there.

Pretty selfish that the two guys who did get price-matching didn't share how they got it with the rest of OzBargain.

Looks like they're all gone from BWS now so no more.

        • -2

I don't get this preponderance of conspiracy theories about this stuff. It's as if everyone assumes that these companies work perfectly, with perfectly functioning staff that are perfectly trained.

Mis/poor training happens. People forget shit. People assume shit. People make poor decisions.

To me it is far more likely that the people got bargains because they met staff that were as above than that they are conspiring against everyone here. The likelyhood that people give a rats arse about denying you a bargain is, I would say, rather on the low end of the scale. The likelyhood that they posted and moved on, is, IMO, high.

        • -2

Not just me, there are plenty of others here interested in how the price-matching was done considering most stores have already sold-out (as per the BWS rep post above).

All I was saying was: having the time to post a picture of a receipt for us to see, yet not explain how the price-matching was done is like posting an OzBargain deal for everyone to see, yet omit how to get the deal and tell people who can't get the deal to "try harder".

          Kapeesh?

        • +3

          Greetings grapedrink,

The picture of the receipt was posted as proof that a price match can still be had at Dan Murphy's.

I'm deeply sorry that I didn't explain how a price match works. However, as my wife has taken the children to their French lessons, I've had the afternoon to research the specifics for you. Please take note that I'm currently enjoying my 16 year old single malt scotch while I type this out, so if I manage any grammatical errors - please don't take offense.

Now, it's of my understanding that any person can walk into Dan Murphy's and ask politely in regards to a matching of a competitor’s price. The only requirement of doing so is that the purchaser is over the age of 18. After formalities are undertaken, the terms of sale are either accepted by the clerk/management, or declined. Reasons behind non-acceptance of terms can be based on a slight difference in product or the lack of availability.

Even after I've taken the time to explain this to you, I don't think it'll help you. I believe the reason you've been unable to acquire the discounted price is because you lack manners. You may need to find some before attempting the above process.

          Good day sir.
          George L. Itchlol.

        • [Deleted]
My single malt has resulted in a double post :)

        • Actually Dan Murphy's clearly states their conditions for price matching:
          http://danmurphys.com.au/help/price-guarantee-content

This is the reason of my initial inquiry. Whilst I appreciate your quaint attempt at redeeming yourself in the eyes of OzBargainers, it still doesn't explain why the staff at the store price-matched an item that breaks all the rules listed in the conditions aforementioned.

There is a reason why stores have price-matching conditions in place, it stops people from taking advantage of store policies and abusing them. Hence we come back to the reason of why I asked about the price matching in the first place. I think I've covered everything here?

        • After visiting my local Dan Murphy's and showing them your receipt, it appears Dan Murphy's do not price match with BWS clearance items.

The manager who was a former manager at BWS knew straight away that it was a clearance item and has rejected multiple attempts at price-matching this item.

          Good day.

    • +1

according to Dan Murphy's you need to take in a the ad from their catalogue to show it is a current deal. so unless you can badger or bully them, it is probably a slim chance…

      • Exactly.

Finally someone understands my confusion regarding price-matching.

  • -2

Found one @ my local BWS, but not on special - price is $117!
Bought a couple of JW Gold instead …to celebrate another Crows victory tomorrow! :-)

    • +2

ozblocd that JW Gold is going to be in storage for quite a long time.

      • -2

haha… too late! All gone before half time! Mates brought over 2 Blue labels for 2nd half…. Well worth it! :-)

  • So price matching will work at Dan Murphys?

    • oh well. just paid the RRP $87.99 and got two bottles (one for me and one for old man).
Figure if I like it I'll be more likely to wait till specials to buy more (instead of pay RRP again).

  • Bottle from Moe BWS just purchased by a friend.

  • Just downed half a bottle while watching the Hawks win.
Awesome Scotch, nice smoky flavor and very smooth!

  • Unfortunately Brisbane stores aren't following suit :(

  • +1

I managed to get this one price beat at Dan Murphys in SA, good times :D

    • which store, and did you show them that photo of the receipt?
