What Is The Most Expensive Thing You Have Ever Owned and Currently Own?

Getting bored at home so I am curious to know what is the most expensive thing you have ever owned or currently own?

I think for me it is my gaming pc setup which is over 4.5k if i include desk monitors.

Never owned a car otherwise I assume most people would put that.

I am prepared for the houses.

But curious about other stuff that is not the obvious like lambo porsche or waterfront property lol

Love that everyone people are inadvertently calling their significant others and their children 'things'.

I recently added up all the things at my desk. Came to a total about 25k of gear (laptops, gaming PC, couple of expensive monitors, iPad Pro, iPhone etc).

I don't own a house in my name (yet), but I'm living in it.

I'd have a very nice car but thankfully I chickened out of buying them.

    • You must be alot of fun at parties!

  • The need to learn, grow and expand. It’s really expensive in terms of opportunity cost — can’t be working a salary when you need to commit to a new craft for the 10,000 hours, plus the allowance for procrastination, such as browsing ozb. The experience is priceless.

My house. I won't tell you the price as I purchased it just as prices started to get super silly. think 2005. In short, my very normal McMansion is worth almost 4 times what I paid for it.

Do shares count? I have some shares in an ASX listed company that are worth close to $4m. Other than that, and the house, the most I've spent would be a car that was $100k in 2015. And it's not even mine, it's the wife's.

    • i guess anything counts.. how did u acquire those shares

Most expensive thing by far is travel, but that's not really something you own… Over the last 3 years that's at ~50k (granted has been months worth in 9 different countries with large international music festivals along the way).

    • This year I've spent 15-20k on travel, 3 international trips & 1 domestic. Better than any material possessions I own.

  • Up until 2 weeks ago it was my land. I had more in the offset than the loan.

But the house is getting built and progress payments have returned it to the red. By this time next year, it'll be the house and land that will be the most expensive thing I own.

  • Great question. Apart from property, the most expensive thing I've owned was a brand new mitsubishi lancer which I bought for 18k as a fresh university graduate in 1999. I'll never be as extravagant. My three cars since have all been second hand and for under 10k. The older I get, the tighter I get. I blame OzB!

The most expensive thing I've bought was a pink diamond engagement ring for my ex wife for 25k in 2009. She still has that….

The most expensive item in my house is a Yamaha grand piano that I bought 6 years ago for $32k.

When it comes to buying a piano at the moment, there are a lot of parallels with the car market (though I believe the latter is starting to improve). Ever since the pandemic, the cost of pianos have increased significantly with long wait times and dealers refusing to discount as they struggle to keep up with demand. In the current market, it would cost $58k to replace my piano and I was recently advised that I could sell my used piano for well north of $40k.

    • I assume you are a decent pianist and it isn’t just something to lean on in a smoking jacket or have women draped across?

I have a friend who has a baby grand piano that was built by an Australian manufacturer, many years ago, and he has just spent a reasonable amount getting it restored. Apparently there aren’t a lot of them still around.

    • Out of interest, which model do you have? My C2X cost me roughly 32k about 2 years ago.

      • Mine is a C3X. At the time, I could have bought a C5X for another $5k and a C7X for another $16k but I didn't have the room (or the budget!) for either.

You did well with the price on your C2X. What was the negotiation like and did you have to wait long for your piano?

        • +2

Dayumm… nice. Yeah, I had to wait ages for it to arrive from Japan. Placed the order in Nov 21 and it was delivered in March 22. Negotiation went as well as it could have I think. I don't think I could have gotten it for any less. I haggled the price down in person then called the salesman a couple of days later to ask for a cover to be thrown in and to upgrade the bench, which he did.

You should redo this topic and ban cars and houses because a lot of the responses are just house then car. Except those who don't have a house, then its cars then whatever.

It is a good question and it is interesting to read the responses of people who didn't say house and or car.

Having said that to answer your question for myself… House then Car lol.

    • TBH, those that responded with "house" most likely don't actually own their house outright, but would have a mortgage to some extent.
Even ignoring that, the perceived value of the house is debatable; most probably base it on the current expected sale value (but don't actually have it on the market to validate that). The value is only able to be determined when there is a buyer / seller agreed value.
And, even if their house was recently sold, should the value of any mortgage be deducted from that value?

      • +1

That is true but the price of property so far outstrips the next thing down that the initial deposit you need to get the loan would already be worth more.

As for the property value, same thing. While they can't validate the sale price I'm sure it's worth more than their car.

        • +1

Negative equity can be a thing.

          • @GG57: Absolutely is a thing, but if you're outside of the boonies, you've likely seen substantial equity growth over the past few years.

Regarding your point about most people don't own their house outright, that is a very true observation. However, even the equity most hold in their property, would likely outstrip the value of their next asset.

Perceived value is fairly easily discernible - most folks would be refinancing fairly recently given the "fixed terms" coming to an end, or a lot of banks offering interest rate discounts based on LVR ladders. The other way is to simply look at comparable sales in the vicinity and get a rough idea of the numbers thrown around.

      • +1

Anyway I really only commented to say I recently spent some time driving a $250K car, my thoughts quickly went from F-yeah give me those keys to Oh F, this is too expensive to fully enjoy.

Not that I was looking to purchase one, but the small thought of it disappeared while behind the wheel, a little cost benefit analysis when responsible for the vehicle felt very different than when considering it at the pub.

And now I am happily back in my used DD 2005 toyota.

    … And what's your address? ;-)

  • I thought everyone here owned a Bugatti with their 500k jobs

    • I would challenge the fact that a 500k job is enough to own a Bugatti. (Except if that’s your only goal in life)

      • If you owned it outright maybe, on a bad year (ie. major service, tyres due) it'll run you about $200k in running costs, on a good year about $60k (insurance and general maint)
