serious question, genuinely curious how this compares to apple vision pro

    • +11

Apple Vision Pro will undoubtedly by a lot better. OLED displays = perfect black with no bloom. Processor is equal to a high end computer. Resolution should make it far clearer.

But the Quest Pro has something going for it that the Apple one doesn't… it's out.

      • +9

Not really fair to compare this to the Apple Vision Pro when that thing is going to retail for $5,300! Quest 3 much better option IMO if gaming is the main intended use case

        • cant wait for it to hit the apple store. would it be ready this christmas?

        • +3

we dont even know the full software capabilities of the vision pro

in typical apple fashion youll be locked into the iOS ecosystem

i dont know any 3rd party vr compatible ios apps yet. VR is niche as is, $5000 vr is even more niche

i know its apple but not sure if devs are jumping to make apps for it just yet

vs Quest devices > you can run PCVR as well as occulus store apps

the apple quest pro could literally have the dream hardware specs but be useless without the software app support

          • @furythree: Even as an avid apple fan I find the price of the vision pro eye watering.
Even if I can afford it, enough users probably won’t buy it to hit critical mass like the quest, which means less support for it.

Still despite being an apple fan I have been turned off gaming and apple for the most part.
Publishers like Sega and others have failed to update their App Store content for iOS over the years and would rather pull it.

Investing in anything for gaming (which is what I use VR for) on apple platform has left a sour taste in my mouth over the years, often when you want to come back to replay or go for 100% completion something it’s been pulled from the store or no longer supported.

        • To be fair, there isn't too much game-changing apps yet.
I probably used my Quest 2 five times since I got it.

          • @Muten-Roshi: the main point is that you can play all the VR games, of which there are hundreds, which i dont know will come to vision pro

and the productivity apps and native functions isnt a quantity measure. its a usefulness measure

and the third part is being able to do PC VR, which basically gives you everything a windows machine can do

      • And priced somewhat less ridiculously. The Australian price for Vision Pro will likely be four times higher than this.

    • +2

Apple Vision Pro is never meant to be a gaming headset and it’ll never work with PC gaming.

    • Unknown at this stage. The vision pro will have far more grunt, however keep in mind that the price is unlikely to let it reach a critical mass to sustain an ecosystem. It's also apple's very first vr headset, so I would expect a lot of teething issues.

They're essentially putting a $5300 product with no ecosystem at all against a $550 item with a mature system of software (that's still lacking imho) and can stream off a pc for even more options. It's also amusing that the quest has had handtracking for several years.

That said, this isn't counting on the random apple factor that will cause hoards of people to run out and purchase it. Who knows what will happen, we might inexplicably be all using vision pros in a year or two as a way of doing wfh meetings. They could also end up releasing a cut price option for non business users and that could take off.

  • +1

the price difference perfectly matches the GST import amount
regarding the difference between apple vision pro and quest pro, get the apple if work apps and movies are important to you, get the quest for the much much larger game catalog

  • Don't forget price - US$3,499 price so you are looking at $5000 or so AUD

    • +2

Direct currency conversion plus GST comes to $6,090 AUD.

  • What is the difference between this and the quest 3? Early previews say the quest 3 has significantly better mixed reality and is cheaper, surely Metas not that dumb to overprice the pro?

    • +1

I mean… Pro did come out a year ago, so even if it was exactly the same, it's expected that tech will get cheaper over time, and that might happen with a new product launch.

      BUT, to answer your question:
More RAM, local dimming, eye and face tracking

    • Never underestimate people's willingness to drastically overprice something.

(By the same token, people buying something is not evidence that it isn't drastically overpriced).

    • +3

The Quest 3 is a better buy.

    • While the quest 3 is a better value buy, you are getting facial tracking, better ergonomics. The cpu is not as good. There are less cameras compared to the pro.

If you are going to do any development, the extra features may help slightly.

    • +1

Quest 3 also has a much more powerful processor and higher resolution. Not sure if upper body tracking and simultaneous controller+finger tracking is coming to Quest Pro or exclusive to Quest 3(?)

Quest Pro controllers self-track with their own cameras for fewer occlusion issues, though apparently they have their own problems such as long wake-up times.

  • Asking for that much, they should do a 100 day trial period

  • +2

But for some reason the price changes at checkout to $1,572.72

    Glitch.

Any product sold by Amazon AU that costs $1100 or more is currently appearing without GST included during checkout.

    • +1

      That’s interesting.

      So will GST be charged?

    • I've marked this as expired. It shows as $1572.72 in my account, but the transaction is the full amount.

  • i'd get a PSVR2 anytime.. oh wait.. i have one already…

    • +1

Enjoy those 5 good games you can play at the moment. :). Seriously though I bought one on launch with the hope that Sony would really put the effort in for good games but I really think they’ve not gone as hard as they should have. It’s a decent piece of tech. Just not enough stuff to play on it.

      • +1

Worth it for GT7 alone for mine.

        • I will admit that GT7 with psvr2 and a wheel is beyond amazing. But again, i needed variety. Hopefully in a year or so there will be some more killer titles.

          • @krammis76: There is plenty of variety
            GT7
            Horizon Call of the Mountain
            Resident Evil VIIlage
Red Matter 2 (and updated original Red Matter out tomorrow)
            Pavlov
            Walkabout Mini Golf
            No Mans Sky
            Beat Saber
            Synapse
            VR Skater

Variety and options are not the problem at all.
Sure, the amazing must-play games are very few…
I've had mine for a few months and love it - there is so much content and so many more to come.
Only those with too high expectations or already own a PCVR or quest headset would not be happy, the rest of us are loving it so far

    • PSVR2 is really great for untethered VR or PCVR.

      • You can use PSVR2 on a Windows machine? Lots of articles online list quite the few gotchas and caveats.

If Sony releases Windows drivers, I would have instantly retire my old and creaking Oculus Rift S for the Psvr hardware.

        • +4

          Vool was being sarcastic.

PSVR2 isn’t working as a PCVR headset. It’s still a “hopefully one day” situation.

        • Yes sorry that was sarcasm, it doesn't work untethered.

Quest 3 is a far better purchase for most people. Maybe Quest Pro if mostly using for PCVR.

  • Quest pro is already discontinued due to poor sales.

  • Not sure how to contact the moderators but could the moderators please update the format for the referral link for Meta. I could be wrong but it looks like the word Oculus has been swapped to Meta.
