Been eyeing this since a scorching summer is on the way and a daily hot espresso is certainly out of the question. These were retailing for about ~$45 just a couple of days ago, so glad I waited.

Usually dispatched within 5 to 10 days.

I've heard dark roasts are suitable for making cold brew, will Aldi's award winning Lazzio beans do?

      • I would say around 1.5 cups of beans per litre or so of water.

        • That’s like 1:3

    • Ty.

    • I thought the caffeine extraction comes from hot water?

    • you dont need a toddy or specialised vessel, a normal glass jar is fine. The reason is that after a day or two the grind will settle at the bottom of the jar and form a fairly solid plug. You can basically just pour the coffee off the top without getting grounds in your cup.

This is exactly what I was thinking. The odd occasion I've made cold brew, it's just dump the ground coffee into a random container, add water, and leave in the fridge.

A specialist container is totally unnecessary, and a bit of a waste of kitchen space.

  • Thanks OP. Got one.

Is there another version of this which is double walled as well, to infuse/make tea? I suppose I can just this one?

I've had one of these for around 5 years, I use it every summer constantly. I will get another one at this price so I can swap them out instead of having to decant into a separate jug.

    My take, for anyone interested:
    - I use a medium to light roasted coffee that has a lot of fruity flavours - the cold brew method brings out these sweet fruit flavours really clearly.
    - I make it strong (fill the basket 75% with a filter grind), steep for at least 24 hours, then dilute it to taste later. This way using 1litre stretches to more like 1.6 litres.
    - I only drink it black, with a lot of ice. As cannedhams mentioned, the caffeine content is very high in a cold brew so I like to drink it slowly and let the ice melt a bit.
    - If you want to drink it with milk follow advice from above and use a medium to dark roast to cut through the milk otherwise you're going to have some conflicting flavours there.

The glass on the Hario is quite thin and WILL break if you drop it, even from a low height.

As people have said above, the Kmart version for $12 will give you the exact same result.

Cheaper and bigger size in here

Thanks. This one actually might be more suitable for me.

  • Any noticeable difference between this and a V60 cold-brew?

    • +1

You'll get a totally different flavour profile from the same beans using the different methods.

  • The big Hario deal that jumps out to me is the switch brewer for 27.33.
I have a mizudashi and I mostly use it as is a carafe for iced pourover storage as unless I want a ton of iced coffee it's simply faster and tastier to make a hot brew and chill it.

  • How does this compare to the Hario slow drip brewer?

  • ahhh stop it OzB ! I'm trying to drink less coffee not moar :)

  • Can I just blitz coffee beans briefly in a little Ninja blender thing or do i have to buy some other gadget?

    • I have never tried this but I can't imagine it would make the "blended" pieces of beans small/fine enough. You should buy a coffee grinder. Even the spice grinders aren't good for grinding coffee beans.

      • Guess i'll find out. It has no problem pulverising ice, nuts etc so

  • Thanks OP!
Been making cold brew with my French Press but it’s a bit fiddly. Cold brew is delicious and definitely worth stepping up my gear :)

I haven’t read other comments. If you like your cold brew with dairy (or alternative) and with sugar, pretty much any medium to darker roasted coffee will be fine.
If you like black cold brew, Aldi beans are a fine place to start. The fun comes with exploring and trying other beans, and discovering what you do or don’t like. I wish you bon voyage!

  • Any thoughts on using something like this vs the Hario?

  • +1

Looks like it's sold out now. 😞

    • Yep, sold out sometime between after I added one to my cart and before I got to the checkout. :/

I ended up getting the Hario wine bottle style 650ml instead. $21.

    • There's an alternative and cheaper than this deal, see my post. Better deal than this one

  • +1

Yep sold out, but these Hario wine bottle style cold brewers for $21 are a decent alternative -

    https://www.amazon.com.au/Hario-Coffee-Bottle-650ml-Black/dp…

They’re 650ml, try this for 1000ml, $30, can lay horizontally unlike the bottle or OP’s brewer -

  • Just use any old container. Don't need to spend crazy and waste materials for cold brew

  • I want to try cold brew apart from cooling an expresso, but changing the dial of my stepless grinder would be pain in the a**

  • What about this one instead: https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B0BW3KS55C/ref=ppx_yo_d…
    $18.58
I know it's supposedly for tea, but I have a spare filter from a previously broken HARIO MCPN-14-B and on the picture the filter size looks exactly the same. Maybe the filter for tea is coarser.
Bought one to try if it works or not :)
If it doesn't work, I can brew cold tea instead :)

  • Mine arrived on the 13/10

    • My order.is now showing 30 October and keeps getting pushed back
