  • big bangers for bucks

  • nice find on the Samsung.

  • Price error on the Samsung? As its the same price on the following:

    $808.20 SAMSUNG 51" FULL HD PLASMA TV
    http://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-lcd-led-plasma/samsung/51-inch-f…

    • The price should be correct as the Smart 3D model is in the catalog I picked up just before for $898, so with the 10% off its $808.20. Pricing anomaly's like this are not uncommon, perhaps it's a way to make the newer model seem more appealing?

      Plasma's have always beat entry level CCFL and LED panels with respect to picture quality. You still need to spend several hundred dollars more to get a LED, and even then the picture may not look as natural as a plasma.

      But to answer your question, Yes plasma can use twice the electricity, but over the years this might only be a couple of hundred dollars more. In other words, the extra money you spent on a LED (which may even have an inferior picture to the plasma), you mightn't recoup that extra investment in energy savings for at least several years. By then you'll be upgrading again anyway.

      I would say the advantage of the LED LCD display's are:
      * Brighter = good for bright sunlit rooms
      * Energy savings
      * Less prone to malfunction (plasma's often get vertical lines after the one year warranty is up)
      * Less prone to burn in (though it's much less of a problem with the plasma's sold in the last few years)

        This is a good take on the situation and I mostly agree, however I have owned 2 plasma's over the last 6 years, and never had burn-in or 'vertical lines' problems on either of them. They do use more power, and can get hot however. Suggest using a gold or platinum credit card to get free extra warranty if reliability is a concern?

        Totally agree about picture quality, I bought my first LED TV (Sammy 6000) this year, i sold it on ebay a few months later so I could go back to plasma because the picture quality was not as good as a cheaper plasma (went and bought the sammy D550 instead).

    Good guys have this for $897 at the moment. Get them to price match JB and you can claim a bonus Jamie Oliver tall boy BBQ valued at $199 http://www.thegoodguys.com.au/cons/groups/public/documents/b…

    • I got one yesterday, paid $897 with 2 years extra warranty & claimed the free jamie oliver bbq which is $125-$200 from what i can see.
      I nearly got one from BBB a few weeks ago for $899 but they sold out. So this is a great tv for the price :)
