Says here it has a micro-usb power jack. Does it require to be powered?

    • +6

I just had a quick look at mine. It is not plugged in via micro USB so I don't believe it is required.

    • +4

It's optional for devices with higher power requirements. For keyboards/mice/thumb drives you won't need a power source.

    • +1

i think, if you want to plug and share a hard drive then it maybe good idea to use and supply that power thing.
also hard drive here probably the 3.5", not sure. basically first just try use it without power if not working then give power

      • Another confirmation for no. I'm using one now and it is not plugged into power.

I have a webcam, Wireless keyboard and wired mouse plugged into mine.

  • From the previous posts, with people saying they seem to have stopped working for 'no reason', I wonder if the way the LEDs are aligned, "the wrong way around" might be relevant. I have two of these and took me too long to realise (with the ones I've got) that the left hand indicator LED is for the right hand USB input and vice versa. Otherwise have no issues with them.
No idea if this has been changed but it is not great "user interface", might have lead people to think that it no longer works when actually it still does….

    • I think that's because when viewed from behind, the USB ports would be labelled 1 and 2 (left to right)

      • yes, and then when viewed from the front, going left to right, the LEDs are also labelled 1 and 2 so are the other way around from what we expect.
If you have only the device plugged into port #1 (the right most as you look from the front) turned on you will be disappointed if you expect this to work when the right most LED (also looking from the front) is lit because that is LED2

    • I had a similar experience too. Sometimes it does not recognise my keyboard; either because it was on the wrong side or because there is a USB unknown device error (e.g. USB failed enumeration). So I keep pressing the button not knowing which side it was and end up having to crawl under the desk to check the LED status. I had it installed underneath my desk due to cable management.

    • Mine stopped working for no reason. It worked and then it didn't.

  • I’ve been using this for couple of months now. Switches between my mac and windows machine without any issues.

  • +3

I bought this a while back, but I actually prefer this one, solely for the fact that it has a remote switch.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B0C8MSP967?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2ov_…

    • This one looks good too. I'll add it to my wish list for when it goes on sale!

      • +1

Yeah, I got it for $37.49 a few weeks back, not sure how frequently they discount them.

    • That's an interesting one. I wouldn't mind one and dumping even more into my cable management tray.

      Will throw that onto 3camels.

    • +1

That remote switch is handy to have,
ie. it reminds me of my ATEN KVM.

Now, I'm wondering does the USB hub/switch work like a "KVM",
ie. if you have 2 x drives plugged in [say 'A' and 'B'],
does switching computers, switch access to all devices?

I wonder if computer 2 can still 'write' to a USB drive,
even if computer 1 is the active one.

      • +1

I don't believe so, it diverts all connections to one of the outgoing USB ports, there's no shared ones.

  • +1

I wouldn't recommend these based on my experience. Got two similar units from Amazon and both stopped working (dropping in and out of connection) within 2 months of use. Waste of money in my experience.

    • +1

What were you connecting to it? Anything that required high bandwidth?

I've had this model for 2.5+ years and use it to switch my keyboard, mouse and mic between my work macbook and PC daily and haven't experienced connection issues. That said, ~6 of my keyboard RGB lights have become faulty (blue no longer works) since I started using the switch. Could be a coincidence due to the keyboard getting old or maybe switching is relatively stressful for the LEDs.

    • +1

Yep same here. When it worked I loved it. Then it started playing up and was next to useless. Given other people's luck I might try again.

    • +1

Are you saying you bought some dodgy random Amazon devices that sucked then concluded all USB switches are junk? UGREEN is an actual brand and not Amazon junk.
I've used my pretty much daily for 2 years between a Mac and Windows without issue.

  • +2

I've been using mine for 12 months, connected to a hub used for work laptop and other to home PC. Keyboard, mouse, webcam connected, didn't even notice the micro USB, all working well in that time, so experiences vary I guess

  • Using mine since May 2022 with Neo G9 and now C3, works fine.

  • i got 3 of these in my household now. all of them work flawlessly, highly recommend them

this one cheaper with $6 discount.
some pretty bad reviews for both units though

  • I have the USB 2 version of this one. It is okay, I have been using it for 2-3 years to switch between my work computer and my desktop PC. There is sometimes issues with it not working and generally switching to the other device and back seems to make it work. Great value but not perfect.

  • I had one of these. Wouldn't recommend. Couldn't handle a headset, keyboard and mouse plugged in, even when powered.

    • does your keyboard happen to have RBG backlighting? A lot of backlit keyboards pull well above the 500mA spec of 'unpowered' USB devices, which might be the reason. I've been using mine for about 3 years now with no issues (keyboard, macropad, wireless headphone dongle, and the uplink to my monitors hub)

How is this better than the Kmart one for $6? https://www.kmart.com.au/product/4-usb-ports-with-usb-adapto… Other than it’s now out of stock… That’s the one I have.

    • +2

This is a switch. You can connect it to two computers and switch using the button.

      • Ah I see, thanks.

  • +1

I had this UGREEN USB3.0 hub switch for a while but it was a pain to switch between my work laptop and personal PC. When it failed, I bought this ABLEWE brand and was surprised it could do 'auto-switching'. Meaning when my personal PC is off, it auto switches to my work laptop and vice versa. Makes transition from work mode to evening play so seamless.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B08MBXMZLV/ref=ppx_yo_d…

    • I have this one and it's way better. Netter build quality, also only $29. I would grab this instead

    • The product description specifically says:

it also does not 'automatically' switch between ports.

      ?

      • That is why I was surprised. If you check the reviews, many said it autoswitches despite being denied by the brand. I suspect it doesn't auto-switch when both computers are on. It only switches when either one is on.

  • +2

Im now convinced that Amazon put things for sale based on my personal purchase history in the last two weeks. Sigh.

  • +2

Been using this for about a year now, almost perfect except sometimes it won't recognise my headphones after going to sleep requiring me to press the button twice to pick them up again.
I have barely used it to switch though.

  • Been working perfectly for me with daily use for a while now. No complaints

  • You can get ones from AliExpress they combine monitor and USB switches into one. As long as you don't have a 4K and high refresh monitor that requires the latest HDMI or DP versions, there's a lot of affordable options.

  • Great stuff, I've been using it with my mouse, keyboard and speakers for the last 2 years.

Needed the 5V input to help power the speakers pass whisper level but other than it is not necessary.

  • I've had one of these for about a year or so and use it to switch my webcam and separate microphone from my work PC to my personal one. No complaints so far, it's worked perfectly.

  • I bought mine about a year ago. Works fantastic. Had one before which was so temperamental. Would recommend

  • +1 from me on being happy with it after a couple of years. KB, Mouse and Streamdeck plugged into it (w/o power) and has worked flawlessly. Purchased Nov 2020 according to my email.

  • Is there anything like this but for Display Ports as well i.e. switching between laptop and a desktop PC for monitors?

  • I use this to switch between work laptop & home pc

  • If you guys are looking for a hub, this one is very decent at 29$ https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B09M8LD1MK

  • I have used this for 2 years now, works perfectly. It powers my Razer keyboard, mouse, camera and an audio DAC without an external power source.

  • I've been using this for the past couple of months to use my gaming peripherals for wfh. Does the job quite well.

  • Could I use this with a wireless keyboard/mouse with a dongle? Currently, I'm manually switching the dongle between 2 PCs which is a pain.
    Cheers.

    • +1

Yes. Just plug the dongle that controls the KB/M into the switch and all you need to do is press the button when changing PCs. I got a wireless mouse dongle connected to it.

      • Thanks. I might look for something better quality.

        • +1

This one is good quality. Ugreen is known for making stuff that works and last at a budget price.

          • @KaTst3R: Thanks for your advice. I'll give it a shot; it's doesn't cost much. I was just worried by these reports of sudden failures.

            • +1

@pupdog: I'll be more concerned if i got it through Aliexpress but Amazon customer service is pretty decent. All products in the market has risk of failure but the risk is lower with Ugreen compared to other Chinese manufacturers like Baseus or the smaller ones.

  • This one looks cheaper. Has anyone used it?

    https://amzn.asia/d/8yzhkDF

    • Save yourself the hassle and get the Ugreen one which is considered a quality trusted brand. You need this thing to be reliable and quick to switch.

  • Failed within a month or two. Currently using a Sabrent USB 2.0 and it has been rock solid and quick.

  • I'm using one of these to switch keyboard mouse & camera along with a .bat file and controlmymonitor to switch the monitors between my work and personal PC's.
Does anyone know if there's a way to run the script that switches inputs on the monitors when it detects the USB switching?

    • i dont know how that would work other than monitoring each USB port on each machine and then also testing when say the keyboard or mouse was ALSO connected at the same time…

OR just checking for the existence of keyboard or mouse…

      and then switch monitors…

The suggestions here might get you somewhere close

      https://stackoverflow.com/questions/44433346/cmd-command-to-…

      Or even

      https://www.nirsoft.net/utils/usb_devices_view.html

Read help file, you can list all USB devices , find one you want to trigger off and then check for it in script with

For mouse/keyboard it will be a green HID device

the trigger a check for connection via:

      /is_connected {\RemoteComputer} <Device Name>
      /is_connected_by_serial {\RemoteComputer} <Device Serial>
      /is_connected_by_drive {\RemoteComputer} <Drive Letter>
      /is_connected_by_class {\RemoteComputer} <USB Class;USB SubClass;USB Protocol>
      /is_connected_by_pid {\RemoteComputer} <VendorID;ProductID>
      /is_disabled {\RemoteComputer} <Device Name>
      /is_disabled_by_serial {\RemoteComputer} <Device Serial>
      /is_disabled_by_drive {\RemoteComputer} <Drive Letter>
      /is_disabled_by_class {\RemoteComputer} <USB Class;USB SubClass;USB Protocol>
      /is_disabled_by_pid {\RemoteComputer} <VendorID;ProductID>

    • This might also be a good starting point:

      https://www.tenforums.com/drivers-hardware/192219-program-mo…

  • Been using this one for well over a year now. Never had a single issue.

  • Had a similar thing for about 3 years now, switch between my laptop and desktop….with:

    keyboard/mouse
    streamdeck
    webcam
    usb keys/ext drives

my monitor auto switches inputs, so this is way cheaper than a trad KVM….

once you get one you'll wonder how you ever made do without…switching cables over is cavemen level nonsense
