For those who don't know anything about this camera:

Yes the new NEX-5R and NEX-6 are arriving soon but those will cost you at least $200-$300 more when they are released. The main difference being the new models will have slightly faster focusing (probably), Wifi and apps.

The main criticism of NEX cameras is normally the lack of quality lenses, however there are a number of lenses to be released in the next 3 to 9 months:

Zeiss lenses:
12mm f/2.8 Distagon
32mm f/1.8 Planar
50mm f/2.8 macro

Sony lenses:
16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS pancake powerzoom
10-18mm f/4.0 OSS
35mm f/1.8 OSS

  • See this post for the extra 16mm lense, battery, for an extra $100.

    • Hi Buddy.. Do you think the extra $100 is worth it? Is 16mm lense useful? I am hesitating… which one to buy…

      • yes, any sort of pancake lens on these types of camera is a must buy. Fits the profile nicely

        • great bokeh on the 16mm, the lense if you change your mind later and want to buy it, it more than $150 i think.

  • Can anyone give me some advice… Should I go for the $613 kit (18-55mm + 16mm Lenses) or this one? Which one is a better deal?

    • 16mm is a wide angle lens, do you shoot a lot of landscape or architecture? If not the 18-55 would be enough for everyday purposes.

Plus the 16mm is generally considered a fairly soft lens… I have one with the original NEX-5 and I hardly use it. So even if you do shoot a lot of landscape and architecture, I would wait for the Zeiss 12mm or Sony wide zoom 10-18.

      • Thanks! I'll make a decision then..

    • with both deals coming from overseas, the $613 is a better one with the 16mm lens and also extra battery (very good if it's original Sony battery).

Regarding returns, I have not dealt with either T-dimension or B&H so I cannot answer that part. I am looking at buying one NEX 5N myself too :)

      • Thanks! It seems the extra battery is other brand… very hard to decide .. hahaha

        • oh yes, sorry that I forgot the B&H deal has a free original Sony battery too, as pointed by chadiwrx.

  • Don't forget you can add 1 accessory from this list for free too. Click on Click Here To Select Your Choice of FREE Accessory

    1 of the accessories is a Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1080mAh)

    • Thanks chadiwrx, missed that part. will add to the description

  • The new Zeiss lenses will likely cost at least $1000 each, if optically decent. Needless to say probably not too appealing for people browsing here. The Sony lenses available at the moment are mostly quite bad, but hopefully the new ones will reverse that trend.

  • the 16mm is not very sharp. but still a good price for twin lens. however if i were to buy one. i will but this kit and get the sigma 19mm

  • I think B&H Video don't handle warranty issues after the first 30 days, so you'll have to deal with Sony USA directly. I doubt Sony USA would cover international postage there and back from Australia. Something to bear in mind…I think places like T dimension do cover international postage if it's a manufacturers fault as they deal with Sony HK on your behalf. Correct me if I'm wrong.

  • So this camera will not take standard SLR lens?

    • No it's mirrorless.

    • Yes, it can if you buy the adaptor for it. You would then be able to use the Sony Alpha A mount lenses and also Minolta.

  • would customs apply any tax to the camera?

    • no tax or GST for anything under $1000
