I think when the 8tb ssd comes down to $400-sub, i'll buy one then for sure. IMHO it's still that touch too high in price, considering the age of the tech. Still a good price compared to what they used to be but still ……

    • Sub 400 would be heaven. That meant my HDD can be in the history book.

Sustained write speed drops to spinning rust speeds after not too long: https://i.imgur.com/IWqw71g.png

      "not too long" ?

The speed drop is after a single sustained write of over 150GB, directly from another SSD.

It's not something that most users will ever experience - you need some very specific use cases to be regularly doing file copies this large from another SSD.

No it's 150 seconds, which is about 75GB written. If someone wants to buy an 8TB SSD that can only practically be written to 75GB at a time before it turns into a normal HDD, go right ahead, but they should probably just trade their brain in for its mineral content with how little they're using it.

        • Again, most people just don't write more than 150GB 75GB directly from a second SSD in a single operation. Ever (aside from maybe a one-off migration of data to the drive when they first install it).

For "normal use" it's just not an issue.

If you're part of the niche group that works with files larger than this, then absolutely this isn't the drive for you.

    • Thanks for this. Just started shooting in BRAW and my storage needs just increased by about 10-fold. So I definitely need large storage with decent sustained writes for when I'm transferring a 500GB+ file.

  • For 4TB version, EVO is so much better for not much higher price: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/804698

    • Depends on your use case. As an example, for the use of being a Steam drive, you won't notice any difference between the two.

      • EVO is $297.86 now, QVO does not make sense at $5 difference.

If speed does not matter, you can save even more by switching to cheaper SSDs like TEAMGROUP 4TB QLC for $209 or the recent SanDisk deal.

          Totally agree 👍
