I feel VR would be an easier sell if better games existed? Quest 3 came out today and it also looks to have a rather anaemic library to choose from. Most people that rave about this just play Gran Turismo 7 on it all day, which is fine, but a hard sell at $700+

    • +4

For the serious or hard-core gamers there probably isn’t enough to satisfy you. But for the average and casual gamer wanting VR this is excellent. If you have a PS5 and want VR and don’t have a quest or a gaming PC or PCVR then buy this.
There is a heap of really good content and I’ve had heaps of fun over the last few months and still have a solid backlog and quite a few games coming out that I want

      • The only thing tempting me atm is Re8 and Re4 VR. But Ive played them both to death without VR, so still on the fence.

        • +4

Re8 is incredible in VR. I played the opening in normal 3d and it was okay, didn’t really pull me in.
But in VR it is absolutely terrifying. The walk from the car in the snow to the village alone was freaking me out, but once in the village OMG!!
I’m freaked out now just thinking of going back in

        • If horror games are your thing, there are heaps of others out and more coming out this month.

Since I got PSVR2 the only thing on the PS5 that got me playing flat again was the Horizon DLC, Spider-Man 2 will probably have me putting the headset away for a little while but have heaps of other VR games to get through.

      • +1

        I want to play VR!!

What do you recommend for me?

I have an old PC with RTX2070 Super
        No PS5, can borrow my brother's PS4.

        Happy to spend decent money

        • +1

Buy a PS5 if you're happy to spend?

          • @justtoreply: not for the sake of it
If person above has a VR recommendation that utilises my Nvidia GPU that makes more sense

            • +3

@ChatCPT: Get a Quest 3. You can play quest and PCVR games

        • +1

          Quest 3 for sure

        • In the same boat. Have a 2080 super mobile and a 6800XT. No PS5 - but the VR2 seems way ahead of most PC alternatives.

          • @Schrodinger: The PSVR2 is very good but has its flaws especially if you don’t own a PS5 it’s $1500 and you can only do PS5 games.
I’d look at the quest 3 at $799 unless you want to play horizon and GT7

            • @choofa: I'm a bit concerned about the LCD screen and lack of eye tracking on the Quest 3.
I pretty much didn't buy any non OLED screen phone since 2011 and all of my screens have been OLED for the past 5 years or so. LCDs must be good now but I'm skeptical of how dark the blacks are on the quest 3. And potentially once eye tracking matures, PC games will have to use foveated rendering to improve performance.. So Quest 3 seems like a very temporary solution. Game wise I think I want to stay with Half Life Alyx :)

    • +1

I rave about the PS VR2 all the time and I can assure you I play a lot more then just GT7. TO be honest I have only played about 2 hours of GT7.
If you are willing to be open minded and try games that aren't AAA then you will get a huge amount of value out of this device.
If all you care about are big IPs and AAA games then maybe it's not for you. Although I'd argue, and for some, RE Village and GT7 are worth the admission alone. These are the type of people you will see all over the web saying the games library is weak, of which I guarantee 90% of them don't even have the PSVR2.
And people forget that we are only 6+ months into the lifecycle. Let's not pretend that the PS5 or XBox Series X had more and better games after 6 months.

      • What have you enjoyed most recently?

        • +2

Now keep in mind a lot of these games aren't PSVR2 exclusives but I don't have any other VR headset so they are new to me. But games I have loved the most are:
Walkabout Mini Golf, Crossfire, Moss Book 1 & 2, Zombieland, Pistolwhip, Rez, Tetris, Before Your Eyes, C-Smash, Switchback.

There are other games I have purchased as well which I have liked but not loved like Synapse, Alvo, Firewall, Nock, Beat Saber.

One thing that the PS VR2 has made me is open minded. I have bought games I would never have purchased if they were flat screen and I am so glad I have tried a lot of games as there are some really great options out there. And with the sales that happen pretty often you can grab a lot of them for cheap. Will try to play RE Village and RE4 when its released but need to get my VR legs up and ability to handle horror games haha.

    • Quest 3 can play any PCVR game, though?

      • +3

You need a PC to play PCVR. Beware the slippery slope of PC gaming induced upgrades

        • And you need a PS5 to play PSVR and are locked into the PlayStation Store?

          • @cille745: Absolutely. I wouldn’t recommend anyone buy PSVR2 if they weren’t a PS5 owner already

        • Yes, obviously. But Quest doesn't have an anaemic library if you have a PC, while psvr2 is limited to PS5 games for now.

Surely most people are not buying a Quest to play Quest-only games.

A bigger issue with quest seems to be fov and image compression/latency.

    • I agree with you, both of them are too expensive for what they offer. I would not like to spend 700+ $ to see in vr how my daily rigged roulette ticket yields me less than 1% of some of the cars needed to complete the high level menus. No F1 2023 support, no upcoming WRC game support.

    • There's at least 10 good games, maybe as high as 20. We're very happy with it

    • +2

Losing the library from PSVR1 hurts it for new adopters too. To play older titles on PS5 you still need PSVR1. I imagine switching between them there would be a distracting difference in quality.

      • Seriously? That sux, that was going to be a selling point for the WAF.

        • Yup, lots of games lost. If you can't play SUPERHOT the most innovative shooter I've played in years, then what's the point?

Plus features lost. Can't watch a 3D blu-ray on the latest hardware, but I can on PSVR previous gen. Sony needs to sort their shit out. Not being able to watch Avatar 2 in 3D on their own propriety format and hardware is so stupid it hurts. Waiting on Apple for force them.

    • +2

Didn't they say the Quest 3 will support Xbox Cloud Gaming as from this December?

    • -1

And if Apple wasn't about to redefine VR. In a few years VR/AR could be mainstream. Buying a PS VR would seem like a toy if Apple VR and the Android clone of the experience has much of the same games ported to it, with finger tracking instead of needing weird controllers. All these niche VR headsets could be sitting in your closet next to your plastic guitars and drum controllers soon.

      • +1

Sure but while $700+ is an overpriced toy we will be waiting a long time to get an affordable redefined VR given the near $5k price tag of the Apple headset

        • Apple, and Facebook, are betting big on VR/AR. I think we’ll see a mass produced version in a few years. Assuming Vision Pro doesn’t flop. Apple will earn on the App Store and Facebook will earn on the data collected, they have big incentives to mass producing these things affordably.

          • @AustriaBargain: Sure in a few years that will be great but right now it’s fantasy and these are the options for those wanting to play today.

          • @AustriaBargain: Eventually entry to the matrix will be free.

      • LOL, the specs on the Apple headset look deeply mediocre and IIRC it doesn't have controllers or basically do anything interesting that current tech can't already do.

        • +1

I wouldn't call the M2 mediocre. Unless you mean other specs like the cameras, screens, refresh rate? I think it was revealed recently the refresh rate is 96hz, though it'll go up to 100hz if it needs to cancel out the flicker from 50hz lightbulbs.

    • I bought Quest 2 for the vast game library, but all I end up doing is watching porn.

  • +5

If it was $800 for both PS and VR, might get it

    • It isn't? Silly me.

  • +2

Pretty disappointing sale price considering it’s been lower without a significant event. Hoping Sony drop the RRP on this to boost sales, but the game library is just so weak atm. Quest 3 launch isn’t helping much either, considering a lot of the Psvr games are also available on that platform, or are existing PCVR title ports

  • +2

Still waiting for < $500 before I pull the trigger on this. As much as I'd like to give it a go (mainly GT7 but also No Man's Sky, Tetris Effect, etc), I just wouldn't use it nearly enough to justify the current prices, even when on sale like this.

    • By that time there'll likely be a hardware update too.

    • been monitoring marketplace for the same reason

  • +2

junk you will use once and collect dust.

    • -5

Exactly. Overrated, overpriced garbage. It’s nowhere near where it should be. Give it another decade.

    • +5

      Not in the slightest.

  • +2

yeah got it and the game, since launch haven't played it since I got it lol

    have played beat saber though.

    • +1

Synth riders better than Beat Saber.

      • Personal tastes. I prefer Beat Saber. On the Quest specifically as there are loads of custom maps and songs you can download for free with mods.

        • Wait, you can mod Beat Saber on Quest? I thought it was a PC only thing!

          • @FujinShu: Yes you can mod it obviously through a PC, then you are free to download songs and maps directly on the Quest using the headset only.

        • Assuming no mods, Synth Riders is the superior game IMO - either way mods would be nice, we nearly bought a quest just for Synth

  • +3

to be honest you might as well get a quest 3 for the money.

    • The OLED clarity and contrast a huge advantage to the PSVR

  • +3

i just wanna try OLED and see how that fares vs q2

  • +4

Just FYI for those wondering if iVRy driver for PS VR 2 going to be a thing, it is, currently being worked on. So hopefully this year you will be able to run a PS VR 2 with steam vr on PC. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1021000/iVRy_Driver_for_S…

its a free upgrade if you already got iVRy drive premium edition for the psvr 1 back in the day :D

please note also that if you computer doesn't support virtual link you will neeed to buy yourself a virtual link adapter.

    • Ok this is big.

    • I was wondering what happened to this. It's good news. Remeber reading once that they kinda gave up.
I'll definitely buy one of this works.

      • I got it in my Steam wish list so hopefully I get notified when it comes out.

        • Oh yes, same here. I hope I can avoid buying a PS5. Even if I add the cost of both VR2 and PS5, doesn't seem like there's a good VR headset to be bought at that price.

          • @Schrodinger: O am sure the YouTube videos on how to do it will be out long before i realize its out lol.

  • +7

Released in February and abandoned by Sony since.

    • the headset is good its just been slow to be adopted. when iVRy open up there driver to psvr 2 on pc then I think we will see people use it more on pc.

      • Big issue is the investment required to even experience it - unless you've got friends or access to a VR venue.

I remember mall demos of early clunky VR in the 90s, that weren't about selling the tech, just the idea.

A live event outside of conventions or scheduled in store demos would probably sell units - but wearable tech, the setup for each individual person and expectation for basic hygiene would make that challenging.

        • +3

its still the cheapest headset with eyetracking though and once you have experienced eyetracking you will see why you need it :D

          • +1

@kungfuman: I bet - I'm on PSVR1 version 2 on PS4 Pro and still find its dated features astounding. Any kind of upgrade will make it redundant - but I won't be doing that for years.

    • +3

I really don't get this take. Its only been out for just over 6 months and it hasn't had 1 xmas period yet. If sony aren't pushing it or releasing good exclusives in the next year or 2 then yeah they have abandoned it but it hasn't even been out for a year.

It's weird the amount of hate the PS VR2 is getting. I really don't get it. I can't remember people dissing the PS5 or XBSX after 6 months when it only had 1 or 2 AAA games.

      • There were more games than that on PS5, but beside that point Sony had announced a heap more.

They clearly don’t care about VR and haven’t allocated any of their first party teams to work on VR games.

It’s going to be all about the shovelware that fills every VR store in hope something sticks out.

Sony had a big chance to bring VR to the masses and fumbled this horribly.

        • Sorry how do you know that any of their studios aren't working on PS VR 2 games? I imagine that they will definitely go down the Hybrid games model like GT7 and RE Village.

I had a PS5 since launch and the first 6-12 months weren't that great. But I also recognised that the thing will be around for 5-10 years so wasn't calling it dead on arrival like so many people are with the PS VR2. And let's be honest, VR is never going to be for the masses. It's no where near as accessible.

        • +1

Sony also haven't announced basically anything flat-screen beyond Spider-Man 2 which is out in a week and a half. I think it's more of a change in approach now the PS5's library is pretty well established.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to know that they are working on Astrobot 2, a direct or indirect sequel to Blood and Truth, and VR modes for more upcoming flat games, and if we're a year out from launch and they're still quiet I'll start getting worried, but Sony are providing support (and cash) to other studios - there's no way the VR update for RE4 Remake would be free unless Sony were paying Capcom to make it, and indie devs for games like Into the Foglands have said Sony are helping them out with their games which in some cases aren't even going to be PSVR2 exclusive.

      • VR has always been a very niche area of gaming, people for some reason thought this time would be different, but it's definitely not. It'll take another 5-10 years before VR and AR are truly mainstream.

        • +3

It is strange that they didn’t partner with more first party studios to get some launch titles going. I think the hardware is very impressive for the price. If they gave me Astrobot and maybe one other high quality exclusive I’d probably pull the trigger. I was also gutted that Dreams didn’t come to PSVR2

          • +1

@Bohlin: Yeah 100% agreed on Dreams and Astrobot, huge missed opportunity. It sounds like Sony is content to play the long game, but I do fear this means a drought of major 1st party titles. Looks like it'll be up to 3rd parties like Capcom to fill in the gaps — I'm really looking forward to the RE4 Remake VR mode later this year.

            • @deadpoet: Huge missed opportunity. "There's not enough PSVR2 games, so we will make them!" Heck of a way to prototype stuff for a willing audience.

        • +1

it would be a thing if there are more games like half life alyx

      • i just want Ace combat 7 to be finally upgraded!!!

  • Damn, that's a bit annoying. Bought this on Saturday, went into JB - they could only offer it at $925 for the bundle, went to EB, they could price match it to Dicksmith for $899 so I went with that.

    Could have saved myself $120.

    • I think you can return it for a refund if unopened?

      • Na been playing it heaps haha

        • +1

Buy the cheaper bundle, then when it's delivered, take that to EB unopened for a refund?

          • @pj1351: How is it going to scan in their system?

            • @[Deactivated]: If it's an identical bundle, it'd going to have the same barcodes, would it not?

I don't think their system bothers to track the individual serial numbers for each unit.

  • +2

For anyone considering the PS VR2, I'd recommend you hold off for now, epecially since this price isn't great — it will go lower in the Black Friday or Christmas sales I reckon.

Better yet, I'd say wait until the end of next year when the VR2 library has matured, and prices for both the headset and games will be cheaper. It's still early days at the moment and you're paying the early adopter tax.

If you're a VR enthusiast, by all means go for it. For everyone else, you're not missing a whole lot. I say this as a satisfied VR2 owner (bought it at launch), but I knew what I was getting into.

I was initially also skeptical that a PS5 Pro is coming, but I'm warming up to the idea. At the moment a fair amount of VR2 games are struggling with graphical fidelity — the full potential of the VR2 headset is not being utilised in many cases — and I think a PS5 Pro will definitely help a lot in this regard, especially when it comes to running the VR2 at a full 90Hz refresh rate for maximum smoothness, rather than doing 60Hz and reprojection. The Pro probably won't arrive until 2025 sometime.

  • +1

anyone else get motion sickness while playing these?

    • +4

It's not uncommon, most people get over it in time - best not to try and push through if you start feeling sick, have a break and come back to it later. I went from feeling a bit off with any kind of movement to fine with full locomotion in probably 3-4 sessions over a week but it can vary.

      • +1

I felt okay trying it on the weekend for the first time, then I tried the kayak game in a norway storm, jesus christ the water movement and waves lol

        • +2

I once developed Mal Debarquement from playing Sea of Thieves for a couple of days. For about a week every time I closed my eyes all I saw was the undulation of waves and it also affected my balance while I was walking. I think that VR kayak game would break me lol

          • @ChadHominem: Wow this happened to me actually… I didn't realise it was a thing but certainly have been feeling it

    • +1

Hell yeah. Especially playing Wipeout VR. I pushed myself to race through one track and was physically ill for a few hours after.

    • Only on Squadrons VR. Felt ill after two or three missions.
Maybe Wipeout VR a tiny bit after a decent stint.

Sitting down helps heaps, but still Squadrons left me queasy.

  • People with glasses can wear this?

    • +3

Yes, and it's quite comfortable, but I highly recommend you either get 3rd party spacer inserts to prevent your glasses from touching the lenses, or you get 3rd party prescription lens adapters so that you don't have to wear glasses at all (this is the ideal solution). Either that, or wear contact lenses.

If you regularly use the PS VR2 while wearing glasses, you may end up accidentally scratching the VR2 lenses at some point, which will be a costly problem to fix.

    • +1

Yes but like the other dude said, be extremely careful and you'll be fine

If you like it, pony up for custom lenses, wife did and loves them

  • +1

If only this would work with PC and Steam

  • -6

    PlayStation Rip-off 2

  • +1

    😭 Cries in pre order.

  • VR1 made me really dizzy…..this is much much better or?

    • It'll probably be a very similar experience. You'll need time and patience to develop your "VR legs" and get accustomed to it.

  • still not beating the last sale from march… if the bundle was round $700 id consider it…

  • I can say also in support of it, there's way more games than just GT7.
However honestly it's almost worth it just for GT7, it's really, really good in VR. Amazingly good.

There's a few fun games girls like too, my wife enjoys puzzling places, beat sabre, synth riders, moss 1 and 2 etc.

  • +1

Love the PSVR2 (brought at launch), I would say it has brought back I love for playing games as the flat screen games start to get a bit repetitive for me. Not a huge player (4 hours a week if lucky), but also use it for fitness (boxing game). Fair bit of money but great fun and I have quite a big back catalog of games to play (thanks to the constant Sony sales)

  • Well I can also say, I just got the red flashing light of death and google is showing this as a common fault, so that's not great either.
