              • @Eatoff: https://reddit.com/r/SBCGaming/s/uCSxAAqoBr

SBCgaming is great, but you can also find more info about the same OS for other devices around Reddit. If the device supports BT, then the instructions are the same.

                • @RocketSwitch: What's your recommendation, arkOS or jelOS?

Do either of them have the game switcher like in onionOS on the miyoo devices? That looks like a great feature

                  • @Eatoff: I'm heavily using ArkOS. The only thing I can't seem to get working is to see how much time I have played in a game. The rest is perfect.

Yes, has a game switcher, but more like recently played. Even better, it has a screensaver that plays the short videos of gameplay of the games you have and you can enter any of them.

                    Very cool!

    • Sounds great, where's the best place to order an RGB30?

The official store. Pay via PayPal for extra protection over AliExpress.

That's where I got mine from, came in under 14 days. I did have a stuck pixel on mine up top, hard to see and some light bleeding, but can't tell during gameplay. So in the process of trying to get a partial refund, don't wanna return it.

        • Nice, thanks.

Out of interest, are any of these handhelds capable of playing Mario 64 DS? My son has been on a Mario binge of all the different versions and is apparently quite keen to get his hands on this, but i can't bring myself to buy an old DS just for this.

          • @Arsenal: The RG35XX has just got an update/mod for DS.

Check it out here: https://www.reddit.com/r/RG35XX/comments/173dbr7/i_test_4_nd… (Mario about 6 mins into video).

          • +1

@Arsenal: Yeah, XX, but performance probably isn't worth it.

RGB30 can, but for best experience, you would need to switch between screens.

I use a New 3DS XL for that, nothing comes close to match the experience.

            • @RocketSwitch: Thanks. I haven't played the game.. does Mario 64 DS rely on the second screen for much?

I realise that due to the unusual form factor emulating a DS is not ideal, but as I said, i just can't bring myself to buying an old handheld for one single game. At least if i get one of these modern handhelds some other games will get played on them too.

              • +1

@Arsenal: Not really, but there's a Mario 64 port for the XX that runs well if you're into that.

                • @RocketSwitch: Interesting. Is it worth getting something bigger/more powerful if performance could be an issue with the XX? A Retroid Pocket or something?

    • Powkiddy stuff seems to be on sale at the moment too. Not bad options. A lot of the advantages above are covered by the Miyoo Mini plus as well

      • I don't like the official website, no buyer's protection, can't pay via PayPal. Use AliExpress, they have an official store there.

    • How long ago did you pay $130? Starting from $145 now ($160 inc GST).

You've sold me on the system itself (I have RG35XX and love it but am keen on a better vertical shmup handheld) but at twice the price it's no longer a comparison to the RG35XX.

      • Almost 3 weeks ago, they had an intro price and they gave me a coupon for having the thing in my cart. So the price has risen since then.

Yes, in terms of price, you can't really compare, I agree. But most of the time, XX is about $40 less than RGB30. So, when it's not on sale, it's almost as if you can't compare the XX.

If the XX is on sale, yeah, hard to beat.

But I'll tell you this, once you play the RGB30, you'll pay 3x as much if you had to, it's that good.

I wasn't sold before I got it. Love it to death.

        • I've bought 3 RG35XX over the past 7 months, it's always $85 standard price.

Guess I'll have to wait for a deal on the RGB30. Search alert created.

        • $130 from THIS seller (86% positive feedback score).

          • @Villainous: That's a good price, but uhhhh that 86% rating is pretty low. Thanks for the heads up

Buying direct from powkiddy, it's 90USD, then there is a banner for 5USD off, making it 85USD ~ $132.

            • @Eatoff: Just no Paypal direct from Powkiddy. Never bought directly from them so no idea how you would go if you run into any issues.

            • @Eatoff: Did you end up buying from Powkiddy?

              • @Villainous: I did, yes. Buying direct was the best price I could find (came out to ~$130), and I figured they should sort any issues for me too. No PayPal option though

                • @Eatoff: Woud love to hear your impressions after it arrives.

                  • +1

@Villainous: Sure, will do. My Miyoo Mini + turned up, and am very impressed with what it can do for the size. I'll compare the two for you

                    • @Eatoff: 👍

                      • @Villainous: So, it arrived and I've had a bit of a play with it, and compared to my Miyoo Mini Plus, I much prefer the Miyoo. The RGB is quite a bit larger, but the screen area is the same size for what I'm playing (mostly SNES and PS1). OnionOS on the miyoo is so much better than the stock JelOS on the RGB30. I might give arkOS a go to see how that compares. The initial setup is going to take more effort on the RGB30 too. The miyoo was easy as to get going, and the game switcher is super handy.

I don't mean to sound negative on the RGB30, it seems like a great device, I think it's more that I'm in love with the miyoo mini plus

                        • @Eatoff: Interesting but totally makes sense. The RGB30 is a niche product and unless you are utilising it for it's niche use then other handheld are just more suited.

                          Which colour did you buy?

                          • @Villainous: I picked up the white. It's quite a bit bigger than the miyoo mini plus, so I've decided to sell it to a friend for what I paid for it.

  • +1

You know, I've been thinking, wouldn't it be amazing to have a retro 3DS/DS console? That covers what…like a 15 year span of Nintendo?

    • We're not far off. There's been some clam shell designs with just 1 screen, there's been some handhelds with vertically orientated screens that emulate both virtually, plenty that just go fullscreen with hot swap screen. The emulation side of things is pretty much covered (Steam Deck can play 3DS without question of course).

The trouble is, some of the best DS games use rare gimmicks like the microphone or closing the lid to solve a puzzle. Probably never going to get a 3rd party manufacturer to replicate the 3D effect either. So getting original hardware and modding it to play every Nintendo handheld game ever, up to the Switch is the only sure fire way of everything working. Or Analogue Pocket is working on it now, which will cost more anyway.

24hrs later, this handheld has just been upgraded to be able to play DS games with a new version of the free fan made Garlic OS.

  • Just tried to order with the code, comes back with "Coupon code doesn't exist".

  • How do you make it two players? What controller do you have to buy?

    • Get x2 of these 8bitDo SN30 Pro and the 8bitDo BT adaptor.

  • I bought the 128gb version from eBay but now I'm reading people say to get my own SD card and install Garlic OS there instead.

Should I buy and use my own SD card or am I fine?

    • +4

Literally every review I've seen says to replace the SD card. You can use the one provided, but try not to get too upset when it stops working and you lose all your saves etc

  • Really love this but I might get one with analog sticks next as some of those PS games would be playable like RE2.
