Just when i bought the miyoo mini+ last week

    • See the clam shell design

    • LOL… I ended up chasing my tail… got the MM and then the MM+ and then the RG353VS.

So now my nieces and nephews have handhelds, Uncle Roger approved.

      • +1

Which one you order the most?

        • I have been playing the RG353VS the most now… I prefer the simplicity of the a Linux setup.

The new Unisoc T618 handhelds all run Android and they take a while to setup properly. I still use the Pocket 3+ but only when I need to run a title that the VS can't run proper.

One thing I do miss from the Pocket 3+ is the stacked shoulders.

    • I literally bought the miyoo mini+ today! Luckily I got it at a decent price (AUD$85 delivered via ebay) lets see if it actually gets delivered…

      • I just did the exact same. I think it's the better device for me with wifi and OTA updated etc.

It's my first handheld, and first dive into retro gaming

    • +13

85 is $6 more expensive than this deal …

      • +22

Money can be used for goods and services.

      • Aus versus grey.

        I'll pay that

        • They all get their stock from the same place, in fact I ordered from that same ebay seller this device a couple months back and they told me it was shipped and provided tracking number, when I asked them for update they told me it wasn't in stock despite them having alternate listing of same product with different memory card config at higher price….. cancelled that order and left neg feedback.

  • +8

I had this for the last six months or so, paid $85 or so but a decent buy. GarlicOS really fixes things up on it.

  • +24

    This are great. Highly recommend.

After you get one, get GarlicOS.

Then go onto archive.org and search "Tiny best set go" and put all of that onto an SD card -> you'll be golden.

    • Same but I'm enjoying MinUI

    • Sounds good, but not getting any downloadable hits for "Tiny best set go" on archive.org.

      Any idiot-proof tips?

      • +2

        https://ibb.co/3CZCfmc

        That's what you should see?

You searching the archive or the Wayback machine?

        • +1

D'oh! Rookie mistake searching the wayback machine linked from the banner…

          Many thanks.

  • does this take micro sd cards? any value getting the 128gb version over the 64gb?

    • +1

Get one without any games… and then follow what Odin said…

The ones with games are on crappy SD cards that break.

    • +1

Yeah, the GarlicOS isnt hard to setup on here. So your better off with your own micro sd cards and I've personally used a 128gb, then a 256gb and finally now have a 512gb card in it.

  • +3

OPs username checks out! Haha As others have said, it's great. GarlicOS and archive.com roms will sort you out. I use it on my train commute to work

  • Very little research from me but what makes these good? Screen size first thing that turns me off. Yes I don’t have to buy it …. Waiting for someone to convince me 😀

    • +1

Screen size is actually reasonable. Depending on how big your hands, holding it can be a bit cramped.

      • Can you hook this one up to tv

    • +1

dedicated handheld for all the older consoles/games really. Screen is decent considering the resolution of the original devices. With GarlicOS everything is well setup for a pretty neat experience.

  • +7

Crossing out AUD $320 is just straight lying. This never retails for more than like $110 at max

  • -2

Why not use the PSX emulator on the phone?

    • +5

      Because this has physical buttons.

      • +4

Buttons can be used for goods and services

      • An old ps3/xbox controller connected to a phone would be better wouldn't it?
Even the cheapest phones nowadays have much better and bigger screens as well as CPU power.

P.S. downvoting? really? for a question?

        • +1

Why do you need a 'bigger and better' screen? The aspect ratio of a phone is shocking for retro games and you'll end up with only a small image because it can't use the screen area effectively. These machines have great screens for their purpose.

And carrying around an old PS3 controller? Really? Then you need something to connect it physically to the phone to make it a handheld. If you don't do that, then it's cumbersome to use. Sounds like a terrible solution.

    • Hispter gamers

  • With Micro SD cards, a single 32GB card lying in your drawer is sufficient with a small collection of your favourite games. Maybe a 64GB if you want a lot of PS1 games.

Any bigger and the list will be overwhelming to look at.

    • Even at 6GB if you do 16bit systems and below you'll still get overwhelmed!

  • Can anyone recommend any retro handheld that can play DS/3DS?
Or do they not exist? (I know there are some issues/difficulty getting emulators for these working on PC).

    • +3

Why not just get a 3ds and hack it?

      • Is that the best way to go?
Just had a quick search, looks like theyre hard to get / higher price point.

        • +2

I picked up a 3ds XL at a local cash converters for about $70, and followed the main guide on the 3ds hacks subreddit. Works a charm.

        • +2

Marketplace or eBay is your friend. The ease of mind when purchasing is that those consoles really do hold their value. If you ever feel like you're done with it, you'll be able to sell it to someone easily.
If you want just DS Games a DSi or DSi XL is your best bet. Just get an AliExpress flash cart and "acquire" your games.
For 3DS Gaming, there's a fair range to pick from, but I'd suggest leaning towards the "New" 3DS models, many recommend the New 2DS XL if you don't care about 3D features. When it comes to getting games here, flash carts only work for DS games, so for 3DS games you have to be comfortable with "hacking", but it's nothing more advanced than watching a Youtube tutorial.
Sauce: I'm a nerd with over 12 Nintendo Handhelds

          • @InLimbo: @InLimbo hey mate could you pls dm me?

I ended up finding a DSi in a random drawer at home ahah.

I have a few questions and would love your assistance :)

    • getting an actual (3)DS is still the best IMO, the dual screen deal makes things annoying short of having something like a galaxy flip.

    • Like others have said, best to get an actual 3DS.

Otherwise take a look at the Retroid Pocket 3+, it got an update recently which boosts performance a fair bit and looks like Citra incorporated Vulkan into the current version. This video tests a few games and seems to perform pretty well: https://youtu.be/Svr-xDyBCnM?si=iWgsl1pHYlg-VU0F

      • -1

        Do not get an RP3+.

Just spend $490 and pre-order an Odin 2. You'll get Switch emulation as a bonus.

        • +2

You can get an RP3+ for like $210 on sale, the Odin 2 is more than double the price lol.

          • +1

@mangobango: Fair enough I don't think I've seen it under $300 AUD. Once you get to that price point in my mind you might as well go all in!

This is why I'd grab this deal or Miyoo Mini plus. The price vs performance (plus pocketability) is pretty spot on. Then you almost have to double your price to get into dreamcast, GC, PSP emulation at the lower end.

            • @serpserpserp: Yeah that's fair, there was an AliExpress sale recently and I saw it for $210ish delivered, personally waiting for sub-$200 before grabbing it.

I agree though, RG35XX/Miyoo for lower end stuff and then splurge for higher end.

    • I think this can play DS. it isn't perfect. But you can get some games running.

Miyoo Mini + can play DS but again, not every title can play because no touch screen and it is pushing the limits of its hardware so not all games play well or work.

    • The Steam Deck if you're willing to pay more than these go for (and you consider it a "retro" handheld).

    • Yeps DS and 3DS is better served by getting the actual system…

  • got 3 of these for my kids about 4 months ago for a big road trip. As they are they work quite well, haven't needed to go the GarlicOS route yet. Saves game state etc.
Construction is delicate so don't expect a drop to be handled - we dropped one and the screen came off - broken - waiting for a new one from AliExpress.
Also one arrived with the battery not holding charge - opened it up and all the wiring was ok so just something dodgy. Got an 80% refund and now just use it with a USB cable only.

  • how does this feel compared to a geniune gameboy?

    • Grew up with an OG Gameboy and this scratches the itch.

  • Does it come with games or you need tonpurchase them ?

    • +4

You can download them for free. But you should only get the ones you have cartridges for….

  • Does anyone have a recommendation for one of these types of handhelds that feels good for people with big hands?

    • +1

You'd probably prefer a horizontal handheld instead of these vertical ones. However they are much more expensive (and more powerful)

    • Get moulded handles.

But nah need to spend 200 plus for better form factor

  • +1

Love how they show one of the screenshots it running RDR2 lol.

  • Don’t the latest version of these have a 2800mAh battery?

EDIT: says 2100 and 2600 on the page.

  • Does the 128G version just come with a 64gb microSD card?

Or is the soldered memory 128gb?

  • Prefer the psp design. Hands get sore quick in this position

  • I was considering the miyoo+ or this one or something smaller/lighter, but CANT DECIDE… just want something on the go to be in the bag most of the time, the miyoo looks sleeker imo

    • Get this. It is cheap. The screen is probably a bit better.

Otherwise pay 6 bucks more for a MM+ off eBay and enjoy it.

    • +5

      I got a Miyoo+ because Miyoo has:

      • Wifi
      • Removable battery cover and battery
      • Smaller than RG35XX
      • Better (more accurate) D-Pad for Contra and similar games
      • L1/2 R1/2 buttons don't feel loose and don't rattle
      • Better battery life

Factors I counted in RG35XX favour:

      • Slightly larger (taller), may be slightly more ergonomic for some
      • More true grey colour, closer match to DMG GameBoy
      • RTC for Pokemon games
      • HDMI out
      • Faster chip (but not good enough to add any systems)
      • will the miyoo mini ever be in stock?

        • +1

Miyoo Mini+ is available anywhere. Always in stock.

OG Miyoo with the 2.8" screen is not though. I don't think they will make any more as the 2.8" Blackberry screens they were using to produce these have run out I believe

They did drop a several hundred more a couple of months ago on their AliExpress store, but bots and collectors bought them up within seconds

  • +1

Iv been using one for a few months with garlic
    Os.

Biggest issue iv been having is the sd card getting corrupted, not aure if its a power or sleep state issue

Been using a samsung evo 64gb card.

Have had to rebuild the sd card 3x now

Apart from that the screen is great, nice and bright and emulation is good

Well worth it for some retro gaming

  • Do N64 games work on this?

    • +1

Not reliably. There is a GarlicOS-based port of Super Mario 64 however.

      • Ok thanks
PS1 games is good tho. Do they all work or are there some that just don’t or work but have issues

  • This, or I have a ps vita sitting in a draw? I heard they can be turned into emulators.

    • If I still had a handheld I'd just use that. But I enjoy the vertical form factor

    • I am in the same situation lol got mine in box and all should I sell and buy this

  • Great for M8 tracker headless

  • +1

As I was checking out the coupon code suddenly stopped working with an error message

    • +1

Yeah getting same :(( code not working for me

Been playing the RGB30 for 2 weeks now, and I haven't touched my RG35XX:

    • WiFi is great, didn't know I needed it until I made a RetroAchievements account
    • Scraping ROMs is awesome on the fly
    • Update OS on the fly
    • Better OS support with many features in comparison to Garlic OS
    • GB, GBC, SNES, NES and vertical arcade games look stunning
    • Pico-8 is fantastic, barely could get it to run on RG35XX

For $130ish there's far too many upsides to the RGB30 to recommend RG35XX.

So if you're looking for more portability, RG35XX is still #1 here, and no black bars for GBA, but you're missing x3 integar scaling. Vertical handheld if you're into that is pretty cool, your finger isn't close to the screen. The RGB30 has the LED light right in front of you, not that annoying, but the XX doesn't.

Lastly, the sound is much better on the RGB30. You're also getting joysticks, which are a better fit for some games, even if they were originally meant for a d-pad.

Not much going for the XX unfortunately, it's nice to have both, but 9/10, you will be playing the RGB30.

    • Thanks for sharing - genuinely interested, especially as I love playing those vertical shooters on my Miyoo Mini. What OS are you running that supports all those features you mentioned?

      • +1

ArkOS. It does come with JELOS, but it heated up far too much and the battery drained hard (so UI issues like scrolling on its own which pushed me to ArkOS, but future updates might have addressed it). So if you want to stick with JELOS, get the image from the Wiki for it, and flash on another SD card, the one it comes with is horrid.

Ultimately, I liked ArkOS better, but JELOS is easier to set up, and takes time to get the best out of ArkOS.

I do have 2 16gb SDs, to go back between JELOS and ArkOS, as the ROM system SD 2 is transferrable.

    • +1

@RocketSwitch Was looking at the Anbernic RG405M. Is the RGB30 a better option?
      TIA

      • +2

RG405M is in a different category. Costs twice as much, so it's not comparable, for example, I would get:

Retroid Pocket 3+ over RG405M as you can do:

        Dreamcast (Wide mode)
        Genesis (Wide mode)
        GBA (Wide mode)

RG405M is not wide enough to do the above, but same chipset.

But, 405M can't do what RGB30 is made for, that fills up the screen:

        Verticle arcade games/shmups
        Watara Supervision
        Wonderswan/Color
        Atari Lynx
        Pico-8

        Aspect Ratio: 1:1
        Game Gear
        Neo Geo Pocket/Color
        NES
        GB
        GBC

        Aspect Ratio: 8:7
        SNES
        TurboGrafx-16

        Tate Mode (Games): https://consolemods.org/wiki/Games_with_Tate_Mode

So, it's a better option for performance if what the RGB30 excels at isn't what you want, but you will soon find that you will most likely use RGB30 more if those points are better for you.

        • +1

@RocketSwitch Thank you so much for the detailed response. Much appreciated!!
Ok now I'm looking at the RP3+. Decisions decisions! :)

          Cheers!

    • Great feedback, thanks. Can the RGB30 do Bluetooth audio?

How is the size compared to the XX?

      • Yes, I remember seeing the options in both OS for BT audio.

Size is about 20% bigger, but this is horizontal vs vertical. Much better ergonomics due to that, but feels like a vertical system due to the awesome screen.

        • Thanks for the info about Bluetooth.

I bought the MM+ as it was very compact and I can pocket it while commuting. Reckon the RGB30 is pocketable? The only reason I'm looking at it is because of the Bluetooth audio, I no longer have any wired headphones.

I suppose I could pick one up and resell it if it's not.

          • @Eatoff: It is pocketable. I can fit it in my pockets, no problems.

But yeah, it's like having a wide wallet.

            • @RocketSwitch: RGB30 currently $160 delivered via their AliExpress store. Who is gonna pay for this new obsession of mine?

        • Hey mate, I know it's a big ask, but can you check if BT audio actually works on the RGB30? I can't find anyone actually confirm it works

          • +2

@Eatoff: I found several people on Reddit who confirmed it for JELOS.

And I just did right now with my Galaxy Buds via ArkOS.

Here are the steps for ArkOS:

Options / Bluetooth / Turn it on / Put your buds into pair mode, so open the case / Find / Connect / Exit out of BT manager / Press Start / Quit / Restart EmulationStation

Sound will now route to your buds, boom!

            • @RocketSwitch: You are a legend, thanks mate. Which Reddit should I be finding this out from? I searched the SBCgaming one with no luck.
