[QLD] OzBargain 17th Birthday - Brisbane Meetup (Saturday 4th of November, 12pm @ Pincadia)

Pincadia confirmed! It's going to be a great time. 12pm Saturday the 4th of November. Please add yourself to the event below!

This will be a three-phase event!

Phase One: Eating and Chatting
You have (up to) $30 to spend on food and drinks. See the food menu here. The venue (or I) will throw in some extra food also + the food prices are very reasonable ($30 goes a long way!)

Phase Two: Sharing Stories + Prizes
Get your public speaking skills prepared! There will be some giveaways (funded by generous donations from businesses) for the best stories from the website - what was your best deal in the past year? What was your highest awarded comment? Have you managed to 'stack' discounts + gift cards to get the highest % possible off? What lengths have YOU gone to grab a great deal? Anything funny or memorable here will be great - come prepared with ideas! There might also be prizes for the most comments, the most upvotes and the most posts for any given member for that year :)

Phase Three: Gaming
With your new (and old) Ozbargain friends, we'll pool the rest of the money together to spend on gaming tokens for the arcade machines! It will be an EVEN amount for everyone, depending on what's left. The more people who don't spend the full $30, the more we have to game (at minimum, we'll have $5 each). I know it's not exactly fair to evenly share what remains, the idea is to come with the right attitude to enjoy the company of other Ozbarginers!

How can I join?

We need 10 people to attend to make it happen! Max ~30 people, so get in quick!

Please RSVP here and pay a $5 (refundable on the day) deposit to my PayID: 0434902929

Once you've paid, you're officially in!

What do I need to come?

If you're coming ONLY for some free food, you're coming to the wrong event. This is about meeting up with and getting to know other Ozbarginers IRL! (The free food, however, is great!)

You will need a minimum ~100 comments to be eligible. Please leave the kids at home, as we'd want to encourage interaction (and kids will take up a lot of time/focus). Some exceptions can be made, so please PM me and I'll help you out :)

How can I help?

This is OUR event (not MY event)! πŸ˜„

I'd love for your creative ideas etc and I'm not at all precious about you taking an active role in the organisation, the more the better! I have not approached any businesses for free items/giveaways, so that's a big way to help. If you'd like to run an activity, or even a fun game, that'd be great! If you'd like to personally donate, that's awesome… if you'd like to bring some name tags and a marker, that'd be awesome!

As always, thanks to @scotty and the team for making all of this possible.

Original Message

Hi,

I'd like to get the ball rolling for a Brisbane Ozbargain meetup. I'm hoping that @stickyfingers @knobbs, and @chrisie (of course Infidel and others too) see this, and join me in creating/hosting the event.

We spoke about making this one having a minimum participation (maybe like 250 comments minimum?) threshold in order to come, just to ensure that ensure everyone who comes is there to meet and chat other Ozbarginers - as well as enjoy the free food!

As always, I'd like to host the event at a place that will do a great deal for us (so we can get the most value out of the $35 per person - it is Ozbargain after all!)

Roddy's Ribs has been a classic.
I'm also wondering about Pincadia… maybe they could provide a package for us that includes use of the PinBall machines?
There's also a place that does Cheese Raclette… πŸ˜…

Thanks for your generosity @scotty! I'm also secretly hoping that you can make it!! Please comment below your ideas, and if you'd like to come? If you feel a comment threshold is too harsh, or that you are an exception, I'm open to it - just want to make sure people come with the right spirit!

Edit:
Saturday 4th of November, time/place TBA!!!

Edit Edit:
Saturday 4th of November, 12pm, Pincadia! See above for details!

My ozbargain alert for "Brisbane meetup" worked!
I am keen for anything, but Roddy's has been good and easy to host the past few ozb birthday meetups.

I am secretly hoping there will be free ozbargain t-shirts too along with Scotty being there πŸ˜πŸ˜‰.

    Edit: Thanks for hosting !

Heyyyy! Good to hear from you mate!

    • +2

My ozbargain alert for "Brisbane meetup" worked!

      Mine too!

All the past venues were good. Pincadia looks like fun, if the packages/pricing doesn't work out an alternative could be 1Up Arcade which offers hire of the full venue including free play of all machines (180+ arcade games and 20+ pinballs). They allow BYO Food/drink which would help with the budget, eg. drinks from supermarket + pizzas.

I’m backing the arcade idea for this year, socialising was a bit difficult at other meetup venues when everyone was restricted to a table.

      • +2

The arcade does look cool, I like it :)

      • +1

        This is an awesome idea!

    • My alert only showed me the newer event, but thankfully @Russ has linked from there to here

      • What alert do you have set? I have "brisbane meetup option:titleonly", and that alerted me to both.

        • +1

Never mind… it was there, just not where I was expecting it to be so didn't see it at the time!

    • +1

Luckily, someone always sends me a reminder each yearπŸ‘
      Thanks @stickyfingers
      Will be thereπŸ˜‹
      (formerly know as Infidel)

      • +2

haha I know, but you'll always be infidel to me!

  • +3

    Tempting

  • +1

Hey, good to hear from you again, welcome back to Australia.

I'll back Roddy's Ribs, love their ribwich. But it appears their Fortitude Valley store has closed, and the South Brisbane location may be a bit small, maybe 30 OzBargainers max?

Perhaps we could meet nearby, and get Big Roddy's to deliver?

    • +1

Lockdown one of the undercover areas at south bank?

      • +1

I was thinking more of Musgrave Park Swimming Centre - South Brisbane. $2 entry in December, and we may be able to monopolize the grandstand area.

It's not an ideal place for eating though, we really need tables. Maybe we could book Kurilpa Park or Davies Park?

  • +1

    Hey Buddy,
I agree with your thoughts and are working to having a successful meet up :)

  • +1

My alert worked too! I'm afraid I wouldn't meet a comment threshold though. I'm a lurker, as my husband usually posts our collective thoughts!

  • I will be away between November 5th to November 16th. So hopefully any other date should be good with me. πŸ™‚

    ( Ν‘Β° ΝœΚ– Ν‘Β°)

  • +2

So glad you’re onto it this time 😌

    Party time! πŸŽ‰

  • +3

Thinking of going back to Brissy for this and turn up quietly if the date is right.

    • +1

excited hope to see you there!

    • +1

I’ll keep an eye out for the bot hidden amongst us

    • Can’t make this event. Will probably drop (unannounced) into the other one.

  • +2

Heads up, a second Brisbane Meetup has just been announced:
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/804964

I think there are sufficient numbers of OzBargainers in Brissie to fill two meetups. Might solve the "possible overcrowding" issue we might have, if we all try to go to Roddy's Ribs.

  • +3

I think some form of minimum participation would be good, especially if there will be other events that people could go to (ie other options without minimums). Might also help to cap numbers to open up the possibility of more venues and to encourage interactions. Ideally some kind of cocktail/finger food setup where people are free to mingle instead of confined to tables… so Roddy's while I love their food isn't the best setup, and last year's Shabu House was a bit better in that you had mostly long tables.

I have some contacts at fried chicken buffet joints that might be suitable for such a meetup.

    • Sounds like a good option

    • I like this idea - in part, this was why I suggested Pincadia, as it encourages interaction!

Fried Chicken sounds great too! PM me the ideas? Or reply here? Thanks for your help!

      • +1

        Ok check your inbox.

    • Just wanted to say that a fried chicken buffet sounds amazing! Keen for this.

      • +1

https://www.seoulbistro.com.au/ ? All you can eat buffet costs $26.90 per person. It’s in Sunnybank though, so may be too close to the other one?

        • Ive been to seoul bistro. The buffet there is awesome (all you can eat wings, garlic bread, fries and unlimited iced tea). Can get busy though.

  • Ok,

I'm going to commit to a date to make it easier - Saturday the 4th of November, around lunch time :) (time TBA!) - Does that work for people?

    • +1

Would it be wise to suss out a place to hold the meet up to see if it's available before setting the date?

      • +1

It's a good point, but I'm actually only free that weekend (or much later myself) I feel that we'll find a venue, either way! Shoot first, ask questions later hehehe

    • +1

      That date works for me!

    • Works for me.

      • Sorry, can't make it now as will have my son with me that day.

        • +1

Aw, I'm putting together a little OzB social club so hopefully we can catchup there soon.

  • +5

I requested 5 weeks of annual leave from early November to join Ozbargain annual meet up! I will be there!πŸ˜†

    • If you come and this is true, you will earn a prize haha

      • +1

I will screenshot my annual leave apporved and show you on the day for prize 😎😎

  • +1

My SMS/notification ringtone is the age of empires WOLOLO sound so on that basis I will attend your event

    • +1

Sorry mate - there's not enough space for TWO people associated with Wololo

      I propose a 1v1 death-match and the winner attends the event ;)

      • +2

I think you need a bit of convincing…

        WOLOLO HOYO HOYO WOLOLO

        • +2

Alright, alright! I can't argue with that! You're in!

  • Saturday 4th of November is to be added to the date reminder here? thanks everyBUDDY

  • Unfortunately I'll be overseas but I went along last year, hopefully someone else can have a great time in my stead.

  • Hey! So, two possible venues:

1: Pincada (Gabba) can put together a custom package where, you get food, drinks and some money to spend on their arcade games
2: Bufwin (Underwood) can do unlimited boneless chicken + drinks + dessert

At this stage, I'm leaning towards Pincadia, but I'm keen to hear everyone's thoughts!

    • Thanks for the suggestions..but since the other meet up also happens on south side… would it be possible to consider venus in the city area or north side too please?πŸ˜…

    • Im keen for Bufwin

    • Pincada would be my first preference.

    • I might be able to make it, Pincada would have my vote. However, please take opinions of the confirmed (or nearly confirmed) first!

    • +3

I've never been to Pincadia, and am wondering how conducive the place is for strangers meeting together and having conversation? I also think the playing of arcade games component would mean people are spread out all over the place doing their own thing instead of staying in one group for meeting/chatting. But maybe some people might prefer the former!

      • +1

The reason I like Pincadia is that they have a downstairs area (basically private) where we can first mingle, order food (our choice, good prices) drinks, chat… then, after an hour or more, we can see what's left in the kitty ($5-$10pp) and distribute the rest as game tokens.

So I see a two-stage meetup - the first half is chatting, the second half is with the games (they have some great multi-player games). It's also more central for everyone. Not sure if that helps change the perspective of those on the fence?

        • +2

Yeah fair enough. In the absence of a clear preference by the masses (and I'm not sure you'll get one based on the response rate so far) I think you (+ any other co-organisers) just make a call and run with it.

    • +1

      Pincadiaaaaaaaa!

    • +1

      Pincadia, easy choice.

  • +1

Attended my first ozbargain birthday last year, keen to go again this year!

  • Keen to come too

  • +2

Hey Pincadia is an awesome choice. Too bad Cross River Rail won't be finished by then.

I'm in and this time I'll be quicker with deposit so I don't miss out!

  • +1

Hope you guys have a great time. I'd love to attend something like this if I lived in Brisbane but I'm too under the pump with my work and family to organise in toowoomba. Have a blast guys.

  • +1

How strict is the ~100 comment minimum to attend?

    • +1

      You’ve got plenty!

PM @The Wololo Wombat and have a chat about it ☺️

    • Mate, would love to have you!

      • Thanks! I'll be there. I was asking on behalf of someone else but all good, they've PM'd you.

  • testing

  • i am interested

    • Hey mate - I'm sorry, you don't qualify for the min comment threshold.

I have removed you from the event!

  • I'm keen so count me in.

    • +1

Hey mate - I'm sorry, you don't qualify for the min comment threshold.

I have removed you from the event!

      • +1

        You cruel man :)

      • +2

First of all thanks for organizing wolloowombat and stickyfingers.

I don't know Gorzy either in real life or on this site but they have the civil duty badge and thus has voted on 100+ deals. Also he has been a member for a few years. With 70 comments that's close enough? Also a brief browse of their comments page and they have a few upvotes on their reasonable length comments (as opposed to negative or none or many jv style short one word comments).

Possibly discretion could be used here? Otherwise it's your event and thank you for letting me in :) (hopefully?)

        • +2

70 comments is not close enough, as it is not 100 lol. I was thinking of making it 250 originally.

That said, voting on 100+ deals I think is a fair point, and I'm think you made a good advocate haha. Happy for Gorzy to join if he's still keen after this debacle lol

  • Slideshows - Calling creative geniuses.

Hey if I recall Pincadia has a few TV's(see vibe section of Google Places photo section) in the downstairs room and we can use it for slideshows as told by Pincadia management.

    Any ideas for slideshows -
    * most popular deal of those present, in South East Queensland and in general?
    * most voted comments of those present, in South East Queensland and in general?
    * What was that video of an OzBargainer filming a vending machine that some poor sod had mispriced?

    • Just wondering are you arranging a meet up at Pincadia as well, what date is that for?

      • +1

Nope I am not organizing one and sorry am I too forward as @The Wololo Wombat said he welcome input into organization? I think scotty would only want to sponsore one meetup per venue per year. This idea doesn't impede or distract from the main events?

        • Hey mate! I’m all for this idea - love it!!

Would you be able to put something like this together for us? I can let you know confirmed users around a week out if you like?

Even top comments and deals etc in general would be interesting and fun. I think there is an ozbargain wiki for stuff like this?

          • @The Wololo Wombat: Sorry had a busy week and didn't get around to it. I can still however make the event. See you soon.

  • +2

Thanks for your studious organising @The Wololo Wombat! Look forward to catching up with all

  • I could come but I'd have to leave at 1.30PM for work. Would it be worth it?
