Although this is 12th Gen Intel 12th, 13th & soon to be released 14th Gen Intel are effectively the same architecture with Intel simply adding a few e-cores, improving the IMC a bit in some SKUs and ramping up the power consumption + clock speeds with each refreshed Gen.

This 12600KF is effectively an i5-13400F but comes unlocked for OCing, has higher clock-speeds out of the box, works with any 600 series mobo without a BIOS flash needed, and is cheaper.

For productivity it generally slots between the 7700X and 7600X, for gaming it generally competes with the 7600X/7600 and its power draw is similar to the 7600X. AM5 will obviously have a longer lifespan than Intel LGA 1700 though (Intel 14th Gen is the end of the line for this socket).

Looks like it can be combined with the Shopback CB offer for an additional $20 cashback bringing it to ~$265 if you have a linked Westpac Card [Expired]

  • Any thoughts on using the stock Laminar RM1 cooler that came with my 12100F with this CPU?

Saw on description this is CPU only.

    • +1

With that small cooler this CPU will likely thermal throttle if placed under any kind of load and be limited to clockspeeds around 3.3GHz (well below its 4.9GHz single core boost speed). The RM1's fan will run at full speed and CPU temps will likely remain in the high 90s if doing anything mildly taxing with the CPU.

A CPU cooler like this Thermalright one runs quietly and will give plenty of headroom to even overclock this CPU (it performs as well as a $200 NH-D15 CPU cooler for a quarter of the price). It has been on sale for less than $45 before but is still great value at its current price

    • Don't do it

      • Thanks for the advice. The case is a Silverstone SG13 so no room for a tower like that.

Guess Starfield will just have to wait…

        • +1

A 120mm AIO would also do the job, and should fit the SG13.

    AHH no

7600x in gaming draws about 75watts

    The 12600k is about 122-155

7600x is a the far better CPU due to the upgrade pathway, but at this price yeah the 12600k is a good steal..it's just SO hot and power hungry

    • Um… the review I read indicates 7600X (being a 105W TDP CPU) draws about 91W when playing Cyperpunk 2077. Are you sure your 75W figure is for 7600X?

      • You can put it in eco mode, and loose no more than 2Fps

        • Well, I don't think 7600X needs to cheat through eco mode in order to show its power consumption advantage.

          • @netsurfer: not really a cheat if it's a function in the bios.'

Gamenexus showed it's the mode you should leave it in

Plus the systems claimed to support the next 2 generations of Am5

            intel can't even promise 2024 on 1700

            • @reader64: My B450 board supports PCIe gen 2 with AMD blocking PCIe gen 4 support via AGESA microcode. Even my outdated Intel motherboard which I bought before B450 supports PCIe gen 3 throughout.

AM5's DDR5 support is not as good as Intel's outgoing platform. Trying to show something is better should be possible with default setting.

    • Ah my statement was based upon power consumption when running the CPUs full tilt in productivity workloads see https://youtu.be/JM-twyjfYIw?t=1163 for reference. Have tried to edit to make this clearer but it will not let me (keeps complaining that the simple edit is changing the store from Amazon Global to Au when this is not the case).

Your statement that the 12600K is so hot and power hungry in comparison is quite an exaggeration though when comparing quite a few reviews online. The 7600X heads well into the 90+ degree C region when running heavy loads (as is expected behaviour to extract max performance in its out of the box configuration)

I agree that the AM5 upgrade path is very appealing and worth considering though

      https://www.techpowerup.com/review/amd-ryzen-5-7600-non-x/22…

This review shows the 7600X and 12600K using very similar power under gaming and full load. If you're worried about temperatures the 12600K should actually run cooler because the chip isn't as dense as the 7600X.

  • 12600kf is almost 30% SLOWER than 13600kf

    • +1

I don't know how accurate is CPU benchmark
Right now 13600kf is more than 50% more expensive at compared to the current deal.

Deal appears to be still active. Actually coming up as $282.51 delivered for me.
