  • Seems like a solid price.

I was looking for some HD600s for around $300. These seem like a good buy.

    • +1

Do it, they are fantastic (depending on what you are going to use them for). Mine took around 3-4 weeks to arrive. I paid around $340 or so after conversion, so this is a good price.

      • Paid similar or $350..
Knew they'd be $20 off at some point..
They charge GST as well these days.
Only took 2 or so weeks too turn up.

    • +1

These are the Drop version of the HD650, which seem to be in the mid to high 500's

      • Mostly because nobody bothers to order it due to the 6XX's existence.

They are different flavours of the same thing.

        • +1

I’m pretty sure they’re exactly the same.

A couple of tests that suggested there was a difference in sound noted they compared a new pair of 6xx to a worn pair of 650, and any difference was likely down to wear on the earcups.

          • -2

@AlexD: I'm telling you that they're not the same, but it's such a small difference that it doesn't matter 99% of the time, and doesn't really sound different for the other 1%.

It's silly to suggest the change in housing has zero changes and caveats, but they're almost negligible. Maybe the slightest timbral alteration alongside that.

    • Seems like a good price, I paid $331.17 for the HD600 on an ebay special a few months ago.

  • Don't "drop" it

    • +3

Easy to do, without a head, I imagine..

    • Actually they're quite durable.

  • +3

    Was $199 - $10 discount + $20 shipping + $20.90 GST = $US 229.90 in July last year. So this deal is great.

I bought a Topping DX3 Pro+ as a DAC / Amp. Happy with this combo for the money.

  • +4

Are these as good as the Normal hurr durr six hund 0s by old mate Senny?

    • Same thing!

      • Close, they're a copy of the HD650 not 600s.

        • Close, they aren't a copy, they are Sennheisers tweaked by drop. Perhaps the sounds signature is similar but better (don't know the whole background and every model).

          • +2

@G-rig: 6XXs are identical to HD650s with a different name. It has been proven by measurements.

Difference between 650s and 600 is 2db extra of bass.

            • -2

@zjz93: Engineering tolerance is technically 1% vs 2%, but it's small enough that it doesn't really matter.

            • +2

@zjz93: Ok I see, so drop don't modify the sound of the headphones at all?

I usually listen to them with EQ applied anyway if at the PC with peace APO (unless using exclusive mode/hi res with tidal). They aren't perfect but nice mids either way.

              • @G-rig: Depends on the product. Some are collaborations and are unique to the site.

In this instance, Sennheiser had more than made up R&D/tooling costs of the 650, which was their flagship until ~2010. This continues production without (theoretically) affecting the value of the original.

              • @G-rig: Not on this one, but they did modify their 8XX a lot.

                • @zjz93: Good to know, I've got the 6xx anyway a while ago :)

          • @G-rig: iirc the 'tweak' is that they changed the headband colour slightly.

  • Is drop and massdrop the same company

    • +3

Massdrop turned into Drop several years ago.

      • And recently got acquired by Corsair, so watch stuff like this slowly disappear…

    • +2

essentially yes, massdrop got rebranded to drop when they pretty much downsized their offerings to just keyboards and headphones. I miss the old drop that sold pretty much everything, including knives and edc gear.

  • +1

Recently got the Focal Elegia, must resist ….

    • I feel ya.

By the way, I got the ifi zen air dac and have started streaming lossless music through apple music (on Windows). Its really improved the elegia.

      • Really? What has improved exactly?
        Thanks

        • +1

Honestly the whole experience with the elegias. I also have the Hifiman he400se and wasn't overly impressed when I first got the elegia, but was happy to have premium cans for the sale price (considered reboxing and waiting until they were not available and reselling).

People say the mids are too much on the stock elegia and I agree. I found some music to be kinda piercing. This is all personal though and they might work fine for you.

After some research, I read alot of people EQing their elegias to restrain the mids. Pairing with the ifi dac was also reccomended for the bass boost ifi offer, which is really nice when you want it.

Elegias are (mid tier) premium cans, so you really should be putting out good quality audio to let them shine. First the source (apple music is the same price as Spotify and tidal but you get lossless audio), then the dac retains that lossless audio a d brings out all the detail, then EQing the elegia makes them sound nice, then the elegia themselves have the components to sound great.

EQing wasnt hard either. I used https://autoeq.app/ and fed it into Peace Equalizer. I recommend at least starting here. It's free and you can play around with what you already have. Then personally, I think the $150 for the dac was well worth it (I work from home so can deal with a bulky dac). My thoughts are that the elegia now offer premium sound for what was a very decent price.

Sorry, if you already know all of this stuff I've just explained. Thought I'd just get it all out in case you weren't aware

      • +1

I've got the Elegia too but with K7 and Qobuz.

        Great listening times.

  • Can you guess suggest a DAC to use with this and my PC?

I have a Fosi Audio K5 Pro, but apparently I got one of the bad ones, and it's worse than my (cheap!) desktop's onboard audio.

  • Have a 595, would this make much of a difference? If yes how much? I drive the 595 with an AE-7 card.

      • +1

I have the HD555's and did the HD595 'hack' when I first got them. The HD6xx's are in a completely different league.

      • +1

I just got 599se to replace nearly dead 595. Sounds with more bass, but feels less luxuary. Not silky, not that soft. I paid $145 though, but better would have taken these.

        • Definitely if you didnt already buy the 599SE. But you need a good amp to go with these.

          • @John Doh: This thought is my only relief. I'm too lazy to use it with anything like that, while even 595 is good enough to clearly hear difference between various laptops and mobos. Seems 599 is the balance of price-quality-ease of use. I can live with that.

  • what do people use these for normally? just hi-fidelity FLAC audio? or do people just use it for day to day stuff, e.g. gaming, streaming youtube?

    • Use it for everything. I started with these but since fell down the rabbit hole. Great thing about them is they are super comfy, light and open so you can wear them all day without fatigue and your ears never feel congested.

They're perfect for gaming (not the best because of their limited soundstage but have super accurate imaging for footsteps ect in shooters).

  • anyone know if it's worth the upgrade from the 599?

  • How do they compare to audio technica ath-ad900x ?

    • +1

I have the ath-r70x which i believe is very similar/slight upgrade to the 900x. I prefer the sound of these over the HD600, they have noticeable better soundstage and (I guess) crispness/clarity. I have not tried the 6XX.

  • -4

byerdynamics any day over that trash.

    • +1

I prefer the build quality and ergonomics and comfort of beyerdydamic but depends which model for both.

I have the dt1990 pro and hd6xx, both great. I sold the dt990 and dt880 edition, would recommend the 6xx over those but need a decent amp to power the 6xx.

  • Hmm, worth upgrading my 990 Pro?

    • I wouldn’t necessarily call it an upgrade. They’re both very different.

I enjoy my DT900 Pro X for games and movies/TV, instrumental/orchestral music, jazz, electronic and anything energetic/punchy. It’s also handy that it’s easy to drive from most sources compared to HD6XX.

I like my HD6XX for everything else, especially acoustic guitar and vocals. Most headphones don’t emphasise midrange like these do, so it’s a nice change to hear.

There’s no perfect headphone after all.

  • Do you need a amp or can run direct of the phone?

    • +1

It will run out of your phone but an amp will improve the experience.

  • Ugh, I just bought some Audeze Maxwells. Is there any point in getting these, apart from satisfying my curiosity about the hype?

    • +2

      No. Maxwells are excellent.

  • +1

Bring your favourite playlist and try to find somewhere to go listen to a bunch of Sennheiser headsets you’re considering. What somebody else rates highly could be too much/little bass/mid/upper and so on to you.
Apparently these are closest to the HD650, but personally I preferred the HD600. Just because the number is higher doesn’t mean it’s an “upgrade”.

  • I got these from the last deal, and pretty disappointed to be honest. No audiophile, and coming from Apple/Bose/Sony headphones, but the treble sounds horribly subdued. The bass is also lacking but that was expected from these, but I didn’t know that the ‘veiled’ sound in the treble would be so bad. It feels like there was a flat EQ applied twice to the treble/mids region…

    • Bose/Sony are bass boosted, so if you like that, you won't like these :-)

      • I'm not really fussed about the bass, I wanted clear treble but this one does not have it. An artist can sing in piercing falsetto, and this will just water it down way too much.

        • You might prefer hifiman sets like Edition XS or Arya Organic.

    • Are you running them through an amp at all? They sound lifeless through a normal aux connection

  • I need a pair of headphones for a digital piano I'm about to buy - would these be appropriate?

    • +2

yes good choice, as long as you don't need closed (noise isolation/cancelling to block outside noise)

    • Yup. Our digital piano sometimes has the 6xx and sometimes the 59x plugged in. Both are good.

    • Most digital pianos do not have enough power to drive this. These are high impedance headphones (300ohms) that requires a good amp. It might work for you but the performance would be lacklustre.

If I have to use headphones on my digital piano, I would plug in my Audio Technica m40x (35 ohms). Most of the times I prefer the studio monitors for the more neutral sound and bigger soundstage.

  • Massdrop x Sennheiser HD 58X Jubilee Headphones are also on a deal there

I've read they have a better full range LFE and slightly tamer mid range compared to the others, HD600 etc.

Am thinking of getting as open backs for gaming with great stereo field.

Anyone else know much about them?

    • Not the best for gaming since the 6X0 lineup don't do imaging too well.

You'd prefer the ATH R70X for that application

    • Got both, both are fine. Really not worth worrying about the differences too much imo. If you're going to go fancy amps and audiophile DACs, the 6xx.

I would disregard comments about imaging and soundstage for games- they are just stereo headphones, most the difference is going to come from whatever sound engine the game uses. It's a bit like obsessing about different variants of high performance tyre when you're driving a VW Combi. (I've compared both these models, as well as others like the HD800S and some planars, it's really not worth making a big deal about).

      • I went down a rabbit hole with Sennheiser and listened to some audio demos with iems, at least for an indication, generally there isn't much of a difference between them at least in regards to frequency response, although there is so much division online about them all.

I think the 6XX sounds the most transparent, and people have said their stereo field is great for games. I can hear how people think the 58x has a veiled sound. The 600s sort of sound better than the 6xx but they exaggerate the top end in a way others call 'sparkly'. The 800s sound like they would only be good with certain kinds of soundtracks, if somethings too free you will hear it and it might not be nice especially in the top end.

I am using Logitech 733 for games which aren't terrible considering they're wireless, but I've always been curious about open back for stereo field.

I'll see what 6xx is like over black friday, but then I'll need to get something to drive 300ohms.

        • If you're going to be playing computer games with them, it's not going to make any difference. I have used my 6xx and 59x interchangeably for games, whether the perfect tonal response and impedence matching occurs for footsteps and pew pew noises really isn't noticecable.

Frankly, just get the cheaper ones if it's mostly computer games. Both sound good, and for music both sound better than cheapo headphones (even if the 6xx isn't properly amped).

But people going on about soundstage and imaging for computer games as pertaining to open backed Senn headphones… that's reading way too much into things.

  • I use this HD6XX for single player PC gaming.

Great soundstage. A few times I thought I had some real knocks on my door.

  • FYI it appears the offer period has ended.

  • Of course my headphones break over the weekend then when I go to buy these the price has been bumped up.

    • Just get them anyway. I paid US$199 plus tax plus delivery.

  • i just bought these blind (true ozbargainer) havn't bought headphones since my Ultrasones Pro900 in 2011, looking forward to these!
