nbn FTTN Upgrade to FTTP

Hi Guys,

I am with AGL NBN FTTN using Belong Modem and am now eligible for a free upgrade to NBN FTTP.

Not a technical guy, so need your recommendation.

In Western Australia, TANGERINE is offering a good deal on the upgrade. How is your experience with Tangerine NBN provider? If you have any other recommendations, then let me know please.

I would like to use my current modem for the FTTP connection. Currently, using Belong Modem on AGL NBN service, is this modem compatible with NBN FTTP?

If my current modem is incompatible with the FTTP, please recommend a good one.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

If you have a CBA account, go with More on discount rate. Keeping mind, free upgrade comes with high end plans for first 12 months.

    • I Just checked TANGERINE free upgrade is about $49.90 for first 6 months. May be I can transfer to More after the free upgrade.
Do you know if my current modem works with FTTB?

Also, just wondering after the upgrade can I downgrade to 24/12 speed if I dont have the high usage?

If my current modem is incompatible with the FTTP

You don't need a modem, NBN supply it.

You just need a router to connect your devices…

If you are a CBA customer, check out More Telecom. They are in partnership with Tangerine, so just go with the one with the best deal.
More Telecom do 30% off for CBA customers for 12 months.
I've been with them for about 18months and no issues at all and great speeds.

Adding to this: More will provide a code for a free eero6+ router if you go for a FTTP plan.

For OP's benefit, your Belong Modem is also a router.

  • Im in Perth and did the Tangerine upgrade. Speeds were awful and I was getting constant dropouts. My speed would be 25-under 50 with the needle going everywhere in Speedtest.net

Jumped ship 2 months later to Superloop 1000/50, thought surely if it doesn't reach 1000 it will still be fast enough, but sometimes Im still getting 36-100mbps.

Auspost was surprisingly the most stable and constant Max speed even though it was FTTN for me lol

No idea about your modem but I'm using the Telstra smart gen 3 modem and it worked for Tangerine and Superloop.

Tangerine (and More, they're the same company) are fine if everything goes right, absolutely useless if anything goes even slightly wrong in the upgrade process either during or after.
Just go read any Ozbargain thread for Tangerine.

Go with a better provider who will resolve issues if they arise. (and if they're going to arise, it'll be far more likely during a complex process like a technology upgrade)
As something comparable, Leaptel offer a $65/month 100/20 Fibre upgrade plan for the first 12 months, so over the course of a year, the cost is identical to the Tangerine Upgrade offer if you were to stay with them for 12 months.

I have been churning providers since I got my FTTP upgrade. So far I have been with Aussie Broadband, Superloop, Exetel and Tangerine(my current provider). I have to say my experience with Tangerine has so far been the worst. Not saying they are awful, but I do get random very slow connection sometimes, I find myself checking the speed at the router just to determine whether it is my wifi or the ISP.

Surprisingly, Superloop experience was better than Exetel. Aussie Broadband was obviously the best, the connection was always rock solid, but they are also the most expensive.

I will probably churn from Tangerine at the end of the month, due to the random slow connection.

    • Not saying they are awful, but I do get random very slow connection sometimes

Have you contacted them? Maybe they have capacity issues during peak at your exchange?
They don't publish CVC graphs so it's almost impossible to tell as a customer….

More Telecom is supposably using the same network and I've never had such problems in the last 18 months.

      • No, I have not contacted them. The issues were intermittent, usually happening during peak times as you mentioned and not every day. My router says there were no capacity issues with the connection, testing around my rated connection, but my kids were complaining about latency to their favourite game servers and I was getting blurry Netflix videos on a 100mbps connection. So it wasn't an actual outage or slow to a crawl, just annoying sometimes. Before you say it could be my wifi, I know enough about how the internet works to work out it is not my wifi.

With this kind of issues, I don't want to spend time to go through "basic" troubleshooting steps with support. It is easier just to churn providers. If you never had such problems, good for you, you and I are probably on a different pipe going out to the internet. All I am saying is Tangerine is not for me.

        • My router says there were no capacity issues with the connection

How do you test congestion with your router?

          • @jv: My router connects to the nearest test server node and performs a speed test. This checks whether there were any physical line limitations with my connection. I have had in the past where my physical line connection was limited because it was raining, those were the ADSL/FTTN days.

        • I don't want to spend time to go through "basic" troubleshooting steps with support. It is easier just to churn providers.

I had congestion issues with Superloop a while back.
Took a couple of minutes to contact them. They checked and agreed it was congestion and fixed it within 2 days.

          • @jv: Superloop support is helpful and prompt.
Tangerine's support is, well essentially non-existent.

            They are not comparable.

            • @ESEMCE: More Telecom's support has been pretty good, no different from when I was with Superloop.

    • Don’t you get charged $200 if you churn before 12 months?

I’m looking to churn but my fttp upgrade is under 12 months- don’t want to get hit with the $200.

Let me know if they still charge that cheers

      • Most ISPs don't charge you $200. Who are you with?

  • Merged from Best Router for nbn FTTP

    Hi Guys,

I am switching from NBN FTTN to NBN FTTP.

Please suggest me a good router for FTTP. I have multiple devices which needs to hard wire connected to the router.

Currently using Belong 4353 Modem for FTTN.

    Thank you

there is no such thing as best, unless we know your exact situation, devices, housing material, location relative to one another, router placement, humidity, etc then we can only suggest based on our knowledge not on the exact situation

      Best Router for nbn FTTP

Router isn't impacted by NBN connection type…

      • it is, FTTC/FTTN without a terminal will require a VDSL2 compatible modem inbuilt to your router.

However with HFC/FTTP you'll always get a terminal installed at your property and you just need a plain straight router.

    • Take a read of this thread and then come back to use with some more information.

    • Not enough detail on devices and range or floor area, but If I were to have FTTP again, I'd prefer a bit of overkill to ensure that I can work as far as possible from the router (for wifi) and hopefully that would mean having LAN ports in each room and/or corner of the house so I could just plug in.

I don't do any gaming, but that being said — I'd choose any of these.

    • You didnt specify wifi, and hence below are my non-wifi recommendations

      Get a GLInet brume2
      And a network switch

    • If you have a small house, get this
      TP-Link Archer AX72 AX5400 Dual-Band Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Router ($200+)
Long house/two storey, probably need mesh system (Deco or Eero).
