This Barista Express comes with a thermal milk included for the same price as the regular one ($639.20)

  • Thanks. Was looking for the Breville Precision Brewer and this brought it down to around $335. Appreciate it :)

  • Saw the black stainless steel model (of the barista pro) for 756 on amazon yesterday, unfortunately it's up to 869 today. Hoping It'll dip back into the 700s come black friday. Probably the best option if they don't have the dual boiler available outside of the dynamic duo anymore

Dual boiler is the oracle. And damn too expensive

    • What happened to the price, bought mine in 2020 for about $800 on discount. Shocked to see RRP $2100!

      • -1

No idea… And its the basic version of oracle.

      • Got a replacement dual boiler last Christmas for $891 iirc, just keep an eye out for deals, RRPs are for suckaz what don't use OzB

        • Where from?

  • +1

Wish i just bought this instead of the Delongi Arte and Breville Smart Grinder. Takes up so much bench space.

    • +1

I have the smart grinder, way better than the barista grinder. But yes, I had to get a plane with a bigger kitchen

        I can tell you're not a true aviator, since it's called a galley :)

I'm no barista or coffee expert but as someone who has owned this machine for a few months and it's been a great home espresso machine, just not perfect. Here are my 2c:

The best part about it is the 3-second warm up since it has a thermojet heating system so you don't need to wait 10-15 mins for the machine to warm up. Great for the weekday morning rush.

IMO, the biggest downside is that it is still a single boiler machine meaning it has to transfer the heating capabilities between the group head and the steam wand. For a single coffee this is perfectly fine and the steam wand is powerful enough to create microfoam for doing latte art and such.

However, anything beyond that first coffee and Breville seems to have included some form of safety to prevent the machine overheating (at least from what I've read). What this does is make steam wand performance considerably weaker so no latte art.

Then again, a dual boiler coffee machine will easily set you back more than $1,500 (now that the BDB has been discontinued).

I’ve got the Barista Express. You don’t “have” to wait the 15 minutes before using it. It’s recommended. Weekends I let it warm up fully. Weekdays I just turn it on and go.

Had mine for a year. Hasn’t skipped a beat

The 15 mins is laughable joke (other than wasting energy). Its a thermoblock. Simply do your milk first, then coffee. A thermoblock is much better at bringing temperature down, not so good at rasing temp constantly.

As for the above steam getting weaker after multiple coffees. Have you tried raising the temp setting?

    • Check that the steam wand is properly clean. I punch out 2 cappuccinos daily. If the steam wand gets every so slightly blocked the performance of the wand is poor.

      • Yep, I regularly maintain the machine (flush, descale, clean steam wand, purge after every steam session, etc).

    • i'm thinking of getting this for my parents. will it be able to do 2 coffees back to back no dramas? for the price, i thought it would be a non issue but your comment got me wondering…

      • Hello. I think it's still a fantastic machine for home espresso and won't have any trouble outputting 2 coffees back to back.

I've found the steam pressure issue only problematic for steaming milk that's good enough for latte art in the second coffee. For the first one there will be absolutely zero pressure issues.

There's a ProductReview page on the BES878 which clarifies that there's a 90-second auto cut off timer for steaming.

        • +1

that's fine and thank you for the insight. i think it will be more than adequate for them, coming from a pod machine with microwaved milk lmao

Just brew 2 coffees back to back, get a big jug and 1 batch of milk. I always do that even with 3 coffees. I don't know what people talk about the struggle of making more than 1 coffee.

    • I regularly punch out 5-6 coffees in a row. The trick is not to steam milk for 2-3 coffees at a time, limit it to 1 full cup or two short latte glasses. Pull a shot for one coffee, then steam and pour. I normally set the milk steaming and while that is doing its thing prep the portafilter for the next coffee. When I am pouring the milk I pull the shot for the next coffee. I think I could have 5 coffees made in time it takes the dual boiler to heat up.

Yes you need to manage your workflow but I have been getting fantastic coffee from this machine for about 10 months. I do a little bit of puck prep beyond grind and tamp but that is all of 20s.

Biggest downside I have found is non heated group head and the tank size. With proper flushing of the portafilter to heat it (and to clean after a pull) I rip through the water pretty quick.

      • If you are doing coffee, milk, coffee, milk..then you will send a heap of water into the bottom tray via the OPV. I now turn the machine off for the last 10 seconds of milk steaming, then back on (it will prime), then quickly use steam wand again. No water goes out the OPV.
Similarly, when u first turn it on, have the steam valve open. Then turn steam off and let it heat up. This way it wont do the startup purge into the bottom tray.
A bit of technique PFA, but uses far less water.

        • Yeah I know I could reduce the amount I use by adjusting technique but I just make sure I throw a jug of water in there every morning. Every second or third day I need to put in 2

          • @02keilj: In native normal use they do use WAY more water than the average machine. But i think they are using 'purges' as a protective mechanism (ie. Purge when turning on to ensure the thermoblock isnt heating up dry)..but annoying.

            • @tunzafun001: I thought the purges were to cool down the system after steam/hot water so the next espresso wasn't overheated.

              • @damion: Yeah correct. But is also purges on startup. Also purges a little between shots.

  • Not sure if the code works on parts, been looking for a new plate, never seems to be in stock.

Not related but bought the express impress for $699 from JB last week. IMO worth the extra $60 for the auto tamper compared to the express only.

    • 100%. express impress is a better option

    • damn, somehow I missed that, was there a deal on or involve coupons/gift cards? Been holding out for a good price for months now and no one seems to post them to OzB

      • +1

Ah sorry I should have explained. Bought the thing from JB @ $799. But I had obtained the 15% giftcards few weeks back. Sorry for the confusion.

    • I'm waiting for a deal on the touch impress.

Upgraded burr grinder and lots of auto features. It's a competitor to the Oracle imo.

      • Yeah I was the same. The price diff though is too big for me. It's literally nearly double. Also people have said the touch screen is laggy.

      • Does the touch impress have different burrs to the barista pro? The Breville product pages for both just says they have Baratza burrs

        • probably the same then

  • Bought The Barista Pro Black Stainless Steal for $758 3 days ago on amazon with delivery in 2-4 weeks.

    • That is a steal,
      I bought it around ~800 in 2020

  • I was hanging out for the dual boiler but I'm kinda sick of how unrepairable these machines are long term.

Gaggia Classic Pro really does seem like the go especially with mods that can turn it into a $2k machine.

  • Pro is a great machine. Picked one up a couple of months ago at RRP and I've got no complaints. Quick to warm up and steam, solid construction. Does all the internal cleaning itself. Pricey but if you enjoy a good coffee, it's a real treat.

Only complaint is the baskets can be a pain to get out of the cup. Chipped off a quarter of my thumb nail trying to pull one out a few weeks back 😬

  • Brings the smart grinder pro down to $280 - should I get it or wait for black Friday sales?

  • any1 know where I can repair it in Melbourne? got one but broken. cheers

    • +1

Try Expresso Fix in Balwyn North.

      • thank you! I wil try

  • +2

I assume everyone used the cashrewards 7% listed here as well - brings it down to ~ $780

    • Would it work with the code though?

  • Anyone done an internal dimmer mod on their Express? (To get them to 9bar). Mine is around 13 bar. OPV mod would dump heats of water, and its already bad for that. External pump dimmer is on the net, but prefer an internal solution. There is a little bit of room in there for it.

  • Pulled the trigger on a Pro

  • This is no longer working. I have checked out the Breville Barista Pro and added the coupon code and it has returned "Oops! That promo code isn't valid. Please, try another".
