  • Any info on whether the firmware it comes with locks out 3rd party toner?

    • +4

I have had this printer for a few years, it doesn't lock out 3rd party toners.

The only down side for me is that the scanner's paper feeder sometimes doesn't feed it on straight so scanned documents a bit slanted

      • +4

That being said, you just need to readjust the rails to get it to line up which isn't hard. Good value for money in terms of features

I heard there’s a chance if it’s been manufactured recently it has updated firmware that blocks third party toners.

Can anyone verify that has purchased this recently or is running the most up to date firmware if it works with a third party toner?

      • +1

Got my L27030DW last year Firmware Main Version Y Sub1 version 1.12. Not sure what that means. Using non genuine toner and Settings screen shows that a non genuine toner is being used. No lockout.

    • According to Google, new firmware update locks it.

      • +2

        What firmware version?

Can anyone that purchased today report back their firmware version from factory?

For me blocking third party toner would be a deal breaker.

I installed the latest firmware by an accident. My generic toner I purchased 6 months ago (I buy 2 packs each time), didn’t register. I contacted the seller and the seller sent me a chip (kinda looks like a sim card) for free. And I replaced the chip on the toner and it worked fine. The seller said new stocks of their generic toner doesn’t have that issue as they update their chip. I recommend this printer.

@lookingforTV: Where did you get yours from. Sounds like they are on top of it. Got my generic early this year from inkstation and works no problem

  • Anyone owns this for a while (i.e. months or years) can comment on the reliability of the paper feeder? While I like these duplexing MFCs, the previous 2 I owned (Canon and Samsung), that paper feeder is the first thing to play up. Consumer grade paper feeders don't seem to last.

Had ours since June 2018. Wife works from home and uses it regularly
      It's printed 7063 pages
      Scanned 740 pages
      Due a new fuser soon
A few of the rollers aren't performing as well as new but will order a kit.
      Still recommend it

This got the best double sided one pass scanner for the price. I only used it for that. Lol

Mine did died during the warranty and got it fixed, since then there were no issues for few years.

    • +1

I have had a similar MFC for 10 years has not missed a beat, low usage but stopped the issue of ink jets drying up.

Luckily, this still has FAX function, allowing Doctors to stay in the dark ages.

I would only buy a brother printer after this experience, that said if they lock the firmware to only genuine toner, I wouldn't.

    • I've used this for about 5 years. The only issue I've had was a small black line that appeared in scans after I accidentally put a page through that had wet ink on it. It took a fair bit of cleaning to get that off/out lol.

  • +1

This looks like a good deal. I believe the reason for this deal is because brother has just released their newer range of laser printers and they have hit stores this week. I'm not sure if those include multi-function printers, But definitely the Brother laser colour printer range. I can't imagine much has changed between versions though, they all print at industry standard dpi.

  • Have two of these in the office. They go ok. Price is decent and can recommend.

One of the best AIO B/W laser priters you can buy. If you want to save some more, you can get the MFC-2730DW for 229 from centrecom or price match it. I think the only difference I believe is single side scanning instead of duplex.

  • +1

Not MFC, but my 2365 (commented on here https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/555998 at 13500 pages in 2020) is still going strong at 22266 pages. Okay for a $120 printer IMHO

    • I upgraded from that, which I had for about 10 years, to this, which I've had for about 5 years. Both have been excellent.

    • smaller form factor looks good

  • mine (now out of warranty) has a problem with duplex scanning in that the second side scanning turns out all black. I've tried cleaning everything and hours googling but can't find any solution.

Have one, it’s great. Saved shitloads on the wife printing pointless stuff in colour. Just wish it had a secret colour mode for when it’s actually needed.

    • +2

If you have a colour printer then I just set the preferences to B&W so that it’s the default whenever someone wants to print, and they have to click through some settings if they need colour. That should stop about 90% of pointless colour printing.

I can tell you’ve never been married

  • Great little workhorse. Was out of stock during the pandemic days everywhere, had to buy it second hand.

Personally would just get the version without the multifunction parts to save some space if I could. Only complaint is the Mac software lacking things like poster print, I have to use rasterbator or adobe reader to do it, and it always comes out just a little bit off when I glue the pieces together. AirPrint doesn’t do layouts either, so you can’t print two pages on a single side of A4 as two A5’s.

    Great MFC.

Wife loves printing what she needs off her phone without issues.

And I love being able to print the odd 200 page report/workbook in duplex at home.

    Easily worth the price.

  • any grey or white model ?

  • Does anyone know if the manual feeder is convenient? I usually print scripts and forms on template papers.

    • +1

Generally on these more basic Brother models the manual feed is single-sheet only. I’ve had Brother printers for years and found it to be very useful for the occasional odd sized print, my only concern is whether the rollers would pick it up cleanly and feed it straight. If you print a lot of forms and it’s essential that everything is spot-on then you can do what I’ve done on the past: look online in the usual places (FB, Gumtree, eBay, etc.) for someone selling a printer really cheap or for parts only, then scavenge the paper tray from it. Load it with your form sheets, then swap trays as required.

  • Uses TN2450 toner I get from Aussie toners. This is my third Brother MFC since 2008. Used in a SMB for faxing and scanning and BW printing. For colour printing have Brother HL-L8260CDW. Wish they would stop changing models.

  • Got one in November last year for $224. Wouldn’t say I’m a heavy user but I’ve put it through its paces and it has been flawless. Highly recommend.

  • +1

Replaced a very problematic Epson inkjet with this Brother in early 2021 for about the same price. Printed 5485 pages so far, and hasn't skipped a beat.

Just block access to Internet and it won't bother downloading new firmware.

    Highly recommended.

    • I’m nervous about any new firmware for my printer too. How would I block access to the internet?

      • Via my router. Don't worry about the firmware - if it asks you to update just say no. :)

  • Have this since 2019. Very solid. Have been using aftermarket toners from ebay. Haven't had any issues so far.

  • Damn, the colour multifunction deal I got earlier in the year doesn't even have auto double sided scanning. And toner so expensive I'm too afraid to even use it, it just takes up 20kg of space :( But the colour prints sure look pretty good in toner imo.

  • How often do you need to change toner?

    After approx how many pages?

    • So it probably depends on different things, but mines about 5000 pages per toner, even though the estimated usage on the packet is 3000. If you buy the toner on sale, it works out to be about 2c per page (I think, my math is not perfect), otherwise it's about 5c per page.

    • I paid $30 (including shipping) for a black toner that is supposed to print 3000 pages.

  • I have 2 of these at the office, it's a workhorse. Very reliable, we print thousands of labels with them.

  • I've had mine since end of the 2000. Worked great (over 6000 pages) but now print jobs are streaky.
New toner does nothing to fix sadly.

Have you tried to clean the drum unit or may even need to replace it with a new drum unit.

    • Have you tried taking everything apart and cleaning with isopropyl? I had to do that after I accidentally scanned something with wet ink :/

      • I can try that tonight.

  • a bit anxious to get this one or wait for Cyber Monday for similar price to last year: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/739328

  • also price jumped to $289

  • +1

Brothers are solid they will last you a very very long time I have one that has been going for 10 years still going.

  • Jacked $289 typical of BPC

  • Damn it was $20 off for limited time at BPC, was going to go OW on the way home from work, now I’ll wait until cyber Monday and hope a deal pops up.

I don’t need the fax, is there an equivalent without it or does everyone just get this and not use the fax?

    • second one is me

  • Got a price matched from Office works. Only thing is I had to go and pick up.

    • When did you get the price match before the sale ended or did you use a screenshot?

      • Got the Price match on Monday, it was matched for 279
