[VIC, Preowned] Blu-Ray Movies: $5 Each or 3 for $10 @ JNR Boss, Sunshine Marketplace

750

This store has heaps of Blu-Ray movies as seen in the photo, lots of really good titles including kids stuff and lots of recent titles.

I came across it by chance while browsing at the Sunshine Marketplace in Victoria today. They are $5 each or 3 for $10 and it says pre-loved but I opened many to check as I bought them and they seem to be all like new, absolutely spotless.

There's a couple of tables of regular DVDs but all the rest are Blu-Ray.

Sunshine market, does this mean they’re pirated copies lol

    • +81

How dare you sully Sunshine’s name!

      They’re not pirated, they’re stolen.

      • Thought that was Broadmeadows

It is known as Scumshine for a reason

I wouldn't be surprised if they stop making blu-rays one day.
    And everything will be digital.

    • +12

      Disney already have in Australia

      • Yes, which means some 4K would become collectors items?

        • 4K Bluray is regionless yeah? We can just import them from other countries. Will probably save some money tbh.

      • +7

A real shame when FTTH rollout was cancelled by the Noalition. Plenty of people won't be able to stream even Disney+'s compressed 4k.

    • +6

      Pretty sure blurays are digital.

      • Digital as in streaming.

      • +4

        LaserDisc is analog

    • Recent news headline about that in the USA:

Best Buy Confirms It Will Stop Selling DVDs & Blu-rays, Leaving Walmart and Amazon as Some of the Last Options For Physical Media

Best Buy will sell them throughout the holiday season, then discontinue sales

I wonder how long until JB Hifi follow?

  • Oppenheimer released yet?

  • +7

    Any 3D blu-rays?

      • I think it was a joke. As in physical media is dying, so do tutu have an already dress format too.

      • +32

Why? Because I have a 3D TV and love watching 3D movies, pretty simple lol

        • Your 3D tv still works? Out of warranty how long? >_<

          • @lainey13: We're using this one and it still works great:

            https://www.lg.com/au/tvs-soundbars/lg-55EG960T

Surprisingly we haven't had any burn in which is common on older OLED

          • @lainey13: It's hanging on! Got a repair a few years ago that barely scraped in under warranty. I'm going to be shattered when it finally kicks the bucket :(

        • +1

          Yeh I miss 3d. Dredd 3D is a good 3D film

      • +1

        Sorry you’re getting headaches.

      • +2

3D movies look really good in VR.

      I have so many questions.
      As probably you did also.

My Dad went out to buy blurays and never came back :(

  • Bluray player for $10?

    Sunshine Marketplace 'preowned' ;)

  • +6

Worth it for the image quality.
Streaming bitrates keep getting lower and lower.

    • +2

Man that Youtube quality. It's like I don't even.

  • +2

    Thanks mate. Got one!

P/S: I thought the bad guys in Avatar is blue in colour? They look green in the copy I got.

    • +9

In Sunshine Marketplace, Avatars are green!

  • +15

There is no denying streaming is of lower quality in both visual and sound. Its not just about the resolution. A badly compressed 4K will be worse than a good bit rate 1080p.

Unfortunately for most people, they cant tell the difference or dont care about the difference. But there are some perfectionists like me, who will continue to support physical media. Disney only stopped physical media in Australian market. Not the others. Thats saying a lot.

Unfortunately we dont have stores like this in BNE.

    • +2

Physical media means you own it for life. Streaming mediums last as long as they're licensed or in business and can revoke access at any time and doesn't require a thousand different logins

      • -4

If you purchase a digital copy you own a license of it for life in that original resolution I'd believe. I've still got some random google play and apple purchases going ~15 years back I can re-download. If they rescind the license I'd expect money back otherwise I'd contact the ACCC or file a lawsuit - may sound rediculous but I'd try :)

    • +1

      they cant tell the difference

      Sometimes that's because they've bought a Falcon 75" LED 4K for $400. Most people don't "value" quality.

      • +3

Or just watch on their phone or tablets. At that screen size, you cant tell the difference between 480p (DVD) and 4K. Your eyes just cant differentiate.

    • Have you tried CeX? I also live in BNE, that’s usually my go to for topping up on DVDs (but some stores do sell Blu-Ray).

    • Where do you buy from internationally? Any reputable sites with decent prices (at least for 4k)?

    • +1

      This. 100% this.

Got lucky the other week here at a BIG W as they had the last Marvel's Avengers that came out in 2019 or whenever it was - anyways, grabbed it cos it was $1 and they were clearing their stock.

The bitrate will stand the test of time for years to come.

    • Unfortunately for most people, they cant tell the difference or dont care about the difference.

Really depends on the film, for a lot of stuff i'll watch 720p/1080p low bitrate "pirate" website streams and it's fine, biggest issue is just hoping it doesn't keep buffering on a crap stream.

If it's a movie I legitimately love i'll get the UHD bluray and can appreciate the difference.

  •

  • blu-ray movies $0 or 3 for $0 @ some specific places on the internet ;)

    • +4

In Sunshine Marketplace, those are the wholesale prices

  • HD DVD all the way!

    • If only they'd won :/

    • I think we own at least 70% of the Australian releases for HDDVD, got a few shelves full of em.

    • A few weeks ago someone dumped an HD-DVD collection at an op shop in Derrimut VIC. About 30 to 40 titles, all $2 each from memory.

  • I'd go there if I wasn't afraid of being mugged!

Ahhh the ol bootleg market :P. I tried to cut corners earlier this year and ordered a tv series (bluray) as it was only $200. Importing it on Amazon was almost $600!!

I found out after the fact that it was a "bootleg" version - but what I couldn't decide on was whether it was the dvd version ripped and reproduced on bluray discs or a copy of the original bluray release… but reconverted. Nevertheless it annoyed me to the point that I just imported the $600 one from Japan.

    • +1

Just a wild guess but don't tell me you bought the complete Columbo series on blu-ray from Japan. I did six years ago… it was bloody expensive then but I will never regret it.

      • A Columbo box set is on my hitlist (think it's being released on bluray November 21 in America!).
The set I imported was 24 with Kiefer Sutherland.
I've got others on my wishlist that I'm aiming to gradually get - The Shield is another that I must own but have neglected to buy.

        • I have Columbo on DVD rips :)

But The Shield is one I'd be very interested in, was that ever upscaled into HD or beyond? Would be wild if so, I need to go look into this.

          • @Click_It: The Shield was released on blu-ray some years back in the U.S. (on the budget Mill Creek label).

See here for a review https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/The-Shield-The-Complete-Serie…

They state that it's region-free (or more correctly, all regions).

            • @cryptowiz: Key takeways from the review:

What we do know from Mill Creek is that these 1080p, AVC-encoded Blu-rays are based on new 4K scans of the original 16mm camera negatives and that The Shield's ultimate overseer, Shawn Ryan, was closely involved in their creation.

The Blu-ray presentation of The Shield will be a pleasure to newcomers and a revelation to anyone (like me) who has only experienced the show in standard definition. The technical crew has extracted a superbly sharp and detailed image from the 16mm source without sacrificing any of the rawness or grit that distinguished the show from everything else on TV. It helps that the production design is so relentlessly naturalistic, so that seeing it even more clearly doesn't disrupt the illusion. The image retains the slightly grainy texture that was an intentional element of the visual style, but the grain has been finely resolved and effectively managed so that it never becomes intrusive. It simply blends into the overall impression of what's happening onscreen, which is never less than absorbing.

The Shield's eighty-eight episodes have been fit onto sixteen discs, with anywhere from seven to four episodes per disc (the sixteenth disc has three episodes, plus extras). Bitrate averages hover between 15-16 Mbps, and while I would usually question rates that low, I cannot argue with what I see on my screen. The Blu-ray image remains superior throughout.

Now you've got me interested in finding the set for it.

              • @Agret: Excellent! I had no idea this show ever moved to BluRay. Could be a Black Friday buy.

        • 24 is also one of my all-time favourite shows. In fact, I'm currently half way through s9 (I watch all 9 seasons every few years… just one episode per day).

          • +2

@cryptowiz: I used to marathon every season multiple times a year. Started getting complicated after season 5, so I reverted to doing it just once (leafing up to the current season).

Went through a few years of not watching it at all. But started doing it again in recent years. Can easily do 3-4 episodes a night or 6-12 on weekends depending on schedule. I aim for 1 season a week or more, last year I got it done within 6 weeks!

As a proud resident of Sunshine, to all the folks making disparaging comments, this is for you. Honestly, truthfully, and sincerely… GFY.

    • +4

      GFY means Good For You?

      • :) can't even be mad at that one

        • In Sunshine Marketplace, never any hard feelings!

    • Gank Films Yourself?

      • ?

    • As a previous Scumshine resident, all the comments are very true and deserving. My worst 4 years of my life was being a resident of Scumshine

      • We are glad to be rid of you Dinguss.

  • Best buy and many others have or are stopping sales for physical media.
RIP Physical media. It was just a matter of time.

    • My local JB has ditched their CD/vinyl/DVD section

      • The one outside of Highpoint shopping centre in VIC did this, it turned into an appliances store.

The one inside Highpoint has all the movies. Very annoying because so much more involved to get to it than just parking in a car park right next to the door.

Time to set up a new blockbuster business

  • Does my Sega Dreamcast need a chip to load these movies?

    They only accept cash.

    How analog is that?

    • Accepted my card just fine, nice try though.

      • In Sunshine Marketplace,…

        Okay, I'll stop now.

    • They took my card also. The lady who serves everyone is very engaging and walks around the store to talk to customers and help people find things. Seems like a one-person show sometimes. Good on her.

All the titles I got have all the marketing slips and are like new and play great.

Seen tons of dodgy stuff in this area over many years but myself and my family have never been mugged or had problems personally. I have had more problems in the Melbourne CBD than in Sunshine.
