12GB New Slim PlayStation 3 $249

100

Just seen this in the Kmart catalogue, almost bit the bullet but held out. Anyone who is in the mood of updating his slim console, i think this is a good place to start.
The console does come with one controller but no games included, else there is a $379 one with 2 controllers and God of War Ps3 essentials in the same catalogue

Its only 12GB, not 120GB - not a bad price though

I think most people probably thought the 12GB was a typo when they first saw it, I did..

      • You mean 120GB? I didn't and you are making it less clear :-S

        • +1

I mean I first found out about the 12GB PS3 when I saw it in a catalogue, thought it was a typo (it's so small, many games need to be installed etc.) but then saw it mentioned in another catalogue and realised it wasn't a typo.

    • 12GB, but it's the new slimmer version.

    • You can put in a 2.5" HDD as well, but renderes the 12GB flash memory unusable.

Although I am not sure if I can pull out my current HDD and pop it in this one for replace my current phat model or do I need to format or something else?

      • Knowing Sony - yes it would need a wipe. But you might be lucky…..

      • +1

Yeah you need to format if you're switching between consoles with only 1 hard drive.
What you can do is use the built in backup feature (similar to Windows) to dump all the data off your HDD onto an external drive, then you can restore the data after you've moved the HDD into the new console.

        • is there a feature where you can connect each ps3 to each other and transfer data that way? via ethernet cable or soemthing?

that is if your old console is still working…

        • Yeah you can transfer the data through ethernet, much faster.

      • I've done it before. And yes - you'll need to format it to a PS3 format, you'll lose everything on it.

      • How are you so sure about the new hard drive for the 12GB model? Some of Sony's wording suggests that it may be external. Either way, it's a big assumption that the new super-slim model will be user-upgradeable aside from "connecting" this:

        Dedicated HDD(250GB) for PlayStation®3 (with attachment) (CECH-ZHD1)
        * The “Dedicated HDD(250GB) for PlayStation®3 ” is for the new PS3 system (CECH-4012A) and cannot be used on the other models.

          http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2012/09/19/ps3-gets-smaller-a…

owners of the 12GB model will be able to connect a 2.5 inch SATA internal hard drive with use of an official Mounting Bracket, or opt for purchase of an official PlayStation 250GB internal HDD.

        • Thanks Sage. Looks like I was too suspicious of Sony's motives with this new model. I'm guessing the official Mounting Bracket is a separate purchase if you want to use your own hard drive or they wouldn't bother mentioning it, and it's probably "the attachment" part of the official hard drive.

  • its 12GB not 120GB! - damn too slow, by the time i checked it out… 120GB is the old version.
(OP has fixed the title, it originally said:
    120GB New Slim PlayStation 3 $249)

    • thanx for picking the mistake. I didnt see it before :(

  • +1

I dont get it why are they even making a NEW PS3 in 12GB??

    • +1

      cut costs

    • You dont think the ps4 is coming out anytime soon do you?

      • i'm going to wait for the XBox 720

    • I reckon it's so the PS3 doesn't look old in comparison to the Wii U.

      • +2

problem is the 12gb isnt going to the US… just poor countries

as i see it, Sony has cut costs but has not passed on any savings to the consumer

a console with no HDD should be $199… not the same price as the old slim PS3 with a 160gb hdd!

        • They've reduced costs and increased profits… why can't we benefit too?

    • +1

Because xbox has a 4gb version

  • +2

If I just want to play FIFA13, is this good enough?

    • The most common data hungry games ask for about 7 or 8gb of the hdd, so it will get you by for FIFA 13, but only another game or so, this model is beat suited for those wanting a media device and no storage

    • yeah, it'll be enough

    • +1

It'll be enough, but there is a 500GB FIFA 13 bundle which you would probably be more interested in. It costs a little more, but at EBGames they are doing the 500GB with Fifa 13 and a second controller and a Sony essentials game for $398, so if you think you might need to bigger HDD then that's probably the better route for you.

  • Will the old slim stock be sold cheaper now ?

  • Talk of the town says - no price drops on existing models. Hmmm nice one Sony! NOT!

    • i'm sure there'll be some deals closer to Xmas and when the new Wii hits the shores…

  • Haha :) i ddnt actually look back to confirm it was 12gb, would have bought it blindly. Thanks mods for the fix and everyone for understanding the mistake

  • hey guys, i was wondering with this 12gb model, I only use the discs for games and wondering if 12gb was enough to play around 20 games?

    • Some of the older games have mandatory installs. If you are playing older games, then 12GB is not nearly enough. Also, if you download any DLC packs for games (like extra maps for Call of Duty), they'll also take up space on the HDD.
Realistically, the best thing to do is get the 12GB model, buy a cheap 2.5" SATA HDD, and slap it into the console (it's really easy and doesn't void warranty). Back when I bought my 40GB PS3 about 5 years ago, I got a 500GB HDD for $90. I'm sure HDDs are much cheaper these days.

    • I think u get into issues by as small as 5 big games installing updates and all that data. But you can as well buy a new hdd and install it, however by then it would be better to buy the 500gb version

    • I am currently playing the newer games such as fifa12, cod mw2, cod black ops. I am not into downloading map contents. My ps3 slim is freezing and making noises all the time, so I am thinking of trading it in for the 12gb ebgames deal.

  • Is there any difference, any at all, with this and the slim version besides the form factor?

    • Just HDD size.

    • +1

      No slot loading BD drive
They now have a psx style open cover and place disc

      • Which one is better then?

        • I like slot load devices, personal choice really… technically there shouldn't be a great deal of difference.
although this seems like a pure price cutting exercise, so i wonder what else they have cut corners on to cut the price down…

  • +2

C'mon for this day and age, 12GB? Seriously?!

I remember when the first XBOX came out with 8GB, it was considered a big thing. But in 2012, All Sony can come up with is 12GB? This is on par with their money-grabbing PS2 design that only had space for 2 controller ports, forcing you to buy the multi-tap…

    • It's to compete with xbox 4gb version. If you want more memory, there is a 500gb version.

    • I see it as the opposite, and that not only are they not forcing you into anything (by having a 500GB model), but they are giving you greater options for your money, with the 12GB model. I've found that both the 160GB or 320GB models are not enough hard drive space for my needs, so why buy a PS3 with those hard drives included, only to have to remove the hard drive and buy something larger? With the 12GB version, I'm not wasting money on a hard drive I wont use, and can buy whatever drive I want, at a cheaper price than the Sony included drives. You obviously need some storage out of the box though, for the PS3 to run.

      • +1

Yes I agree on this one VS inflexible Xbox hdd. At least Sony lets you upgrade the HDD with any standard 2.5", unlike Microsoft.

  • Everyone, stfu and get a pc.

    • Last of Us

  • if only PS3 Play is better than Xbox kinect, I would have switched to PS3

  • Does anyone know if this model would be backwards compatible with ps2 games? Would jump on it if it was

    • Nope

    • Forget ps2 games, if you jump on it, you won't be able to play any games.

      • He's getting confused with the Sony Trampoline®3
