Are 3rd party docks still bricking switch nowdays?

    • yes

    • +2

Most of them shouldn't, the main reason for bricking was due to 3rd party docks having improper power delivery chips which would deliver improper voltage to the console and/or by using a different power adapter from the official Nintendo one.

These days it's not really a problem, I'm using a newer 3rd party dock since last year and it's been fine for me at least.

Still a problem as far as I'm aware. There is still the risk that the PD chips on the docks don't negotiate right. Good video here https://youtu.be/u6INIHrZBGg

      • Interesting read here, not sure it fully explains why 3rd party docks are causing problems, but certainly makes for good reading for anyone interested in such things.

      • Any ideas about a Nintendo dock with a third party power supply? I acquired a dock at a garage sale for $5 so wanting a way to power it but not fancying risking a cheapo power cable.

        • I got a brand new official nintendo power supply from Cash Converters for $20 a few years ago, significantly cheaper than i could source elsewhere. They seemed to be an authorised reseller or something. Could try that if you have one nearby. Ideally, that's what you'd be after for charging at the dock.

From what I understand any USB-C charger with PD should be fine for directly charging the switch alone. It will only pull 18W max, but interestingly enough, at least by the tests on the page I linked earlier, it seems to have a max current draw of 2A. So ideally, you'd be after a charger that can supply 9V/2A or 12V/1.5A etc.

Someone much smarter than I would probably be able to tell you that I've got that entirely wrong somehow though, so take that with a grain of salt.

        • I think to play in docked mode you need something like 39W (15v, 2.6A) I think a PPS (PD 3.0) charger above that wattage can probably sort out the right V / A combo but I could be wrong. I prefer to stick with the official Nintendo charger.

  • Got the red and blue version of this, works perfectly with the oled switch.
