I have the imini 2, very nice little torch, love that its magnetic good for those "on your back" moments under your resto

good for those "on your back" moments

Usually I don't need lights for those moments

      • +3

Touch and feel or stick and poke?

      • Well…. it is textured, so…. ribbed for your pleasure?

    • didn't know this existed until just now. Any concerns re. the torch falling off and getting lost?

  • +1

    Shipping kills it!

    • +8

I mean yeah, maybe, but who buys just the one torch from Olight? Knives, tools, lanterns, there's even an axe now! I reckon 8 bucks for that Torch is still a deal.

Also for those waiting on the sale: don't forget Shopback and Cashrewards is usually 10% or higher.

      • Ooo an axe, sold!

      • +2

        …And my AXE!

      • I could become Axe Cop!

      • I do. I don't think most of their stuff is worth the money, but I think this torch is worth the $8 postage. Similarly I have two other of the rechargeable ones from previous deals.

  • +1

how is this better compared to this?

    • For starters the one you linked is pretty big compared to the olight one. AAA battery vs built in battery depends on your preference. Not much other info so can't compare other things.

      • +1

there are some others on aliexpress which are less than half the price of an olight. just wondering if the olight is much better than those or is it just another rebrand of a cheap Chinese flashlight from a massive factory. this takes 3 lr44 batteries. this is the same price for a sleek looking design. this comes with a clip

        • I would never buy anything from aliexpress so there is that.

I like Olight and the quality seems pretty decent for the price. I don't have a whole lot of experience with other torch brands. I've tried Nitecore keychain ones and they didn't last long at all.

          • @ozbs25:

I've tried Nitecore keychain ones and they didn't last long at all.

Love my Tini2! Purchased based on OzB comments on an old post

            • @andresampras: I got the tube ones. They were supposed to be good but I didn't have a good experience with them. I think we had 3 of them and all of them died.

              • @ozbs25: Interesting. I gifted 2 of the Nitecore Tiki to 2 different people ~ a year ago, both are happy with them.

One of those people is notorious for breaking/damaging/losing things but it's still in good nick.

                Difference in luck I guess.

Out of interest - where did you buy the Nitecores?

                • @andresampras: I can't remember. It's been so long, possibly over 10 years ago. Probably just some torch shop or outdoor store online.

              • @ozbs25: the nitecore tube clones die quite quickly (look and feel the same so can be misleading). I've had the same tube for 8 years and it is EDC on my keyring. Other 1/2 also has one on her keyring and it is also 8 years old.

                • @davidp: I did buy them from a Australian store I think and they looked genuine. I guess they could be fakes though.

        • +2

these look like good cheap lights for a zipper pull aso.
but even from the pictures I can see that they are probably not at the quality level of Olight.
All my Olight lights are very well mashined and have high efficiency/bright LEDs.
there is definitely place for both.
for me the main thing is, by now I'm confident of the quality I get with Olight, but Aliexpress is a hit and miss. may have to order 2 $4 torches to get one good one.

        • +5

Olight is a 'proper' flashlight manufacturer and the build quality is miles better than those cheap AliExpress models. It's not even a fair comparison.

The machining on the Olight is nice, with smooth, square cut threads. The parts will be nicely anodised (and not painted), and the light will actually be waterproof (if it claims to be).

The LED is a proper Cree / Nichia and not some random Chinese LED. The Olight will meet its specified brightness, the beam won't have any weird artifacts, and it'll meet the runtime claim.

Note that the AliExpress model which uses multiple LR44 batteries only does this so they can avoid including a proper LED driver circuit - these batteries have really awful capacity but it's an easy way to get higher voltage in a small space. The Olight needs a more complex and expensive boost driver.

That being said, there are other affordable brands that I prefer and which offer better value. Look at Convoy, Noctigon/Emisar, Sofirn, Wurkkos just to name a few.

Don't bother with the garbage no-name lights - the gulf in build quality is so enormous that they aren't even really in the same category.

          • +1

@JMC: Great comparison there and important points especially about the LED drivers and also devices that use of coin type batteries.

          • @JMC: olight is outstanding for its use of youtube influencers. They only have two lights that don't use proprietary charging.

Wurkkos, sofirn and convoy are all sold on aliexpress - they each have their own aliexpress stores as well.

    • Cheap plastic vs nicely machined aluminium, no-name LED vs Philips Luxeon, replaceable vs non replaceable battery, and IPx8 waterproof for the Olight.

      • well, replaceable battery, yes. It has to be an olight battery though, unless you buy one of the two only models that do not have their proprietary charging.

Philips luxeon isn't that well known in the flashlight world. This is the first I've heard of it, although I'm not interested in olight because of the proprietary batteries, charging etc.

        • The i3E takes a regular old AAA, so no issues there. I know Olight has a number of proprietary models though (and are rightly criticised for it).

The Luxeon line goes back a long way (Philips made some of the earliest high-power LEDs back when they first started appearing in torches). Various Philips LEDs (under the Luxeon / Rebel families) have been popular enough over the years, though not nearly as prolific as Cree for use in torches.

I know Nichia / Cree / Luminus are more popular these days (and I don't know too much about the Luxeon TX in the i3E), but any LED from a large manufacturer is going to be a lot better than the random, unknown LEDs which make their way into the $2 models on Aliexpress.

          • @JMC: yes, the i3e is one of the two.

High end and budget enthusiast lights pretty much only use cree and nichia.

I'm sure the philips is OK, even if not that popular in the flashlight world where performance is constantly evolving. I just rebel against brands whose popularity is mostly driven by youtube influencers.

            • +1

              @poohduck: Yeah all fair points.

I've seen a lot of models using Luminous these days, too. The SST-20, SST-40 and SFT-40 are seeing a lot of use.

              • @JMC: ah, didn't know they were a different brand. I have an sst-40; kind of old, but runs cool and shoots far.

I did order the gober kit for my dog, because of the 180 degree light flash. I also have their aaa lights; I like their simplicity and basicness, and the fact that they don't have on board charging. I wish they had the slight twist of the tail cap to prevent accidental turning on - something that all the enthusiast lights seem to have.

This'll be the first 'freebie' from Olight I'm going to skip, more interested in the rechargeable ones as giveaway gifts

    • +1

I'm not super interested in the torch itself but there are other free things you can get if your membership level is high enough. All together it's enough for me to grab more stuff I don't really need. They know what they are doing…

    • I got a rechargeable one a while ago, admittedly with a really small battery, but it self-discharges really quickly - like charge it one day, three days later it's flat. Is that typical?

      • what brand is yours?

Unless you're using it a lot, no that's not typical for a decent brand

I think my nitecore lasts months per charge with occasional use….for now anyway, I'm sure the battery will degrade over time

      • That's not typical of my olight rechargeables. They last months on a charge, I can keep them in the bottom of a bag for emergencies and they work when I need them. You must have gotten a faulty one.

  • +3

Ah crap, .not more Free Olights (plus $7.95 shipping). I have too many but always seem to order more…hahaha!.
Luckily this time around is only the AAA type so will give it a miss as I collect the little iIr2 rechargeable ones.

  • +2

Sweet deal but really, a company with an Australian web url using ounces and inches for measurements is especially annoying.

    • +3

There is a smattering of grammar problems, particularly during themed promotions, but I believe it's not entirely under the Australian distributors control.

That said, the Aussies are really(!!) good with shipping, customer service, and the Facebook group they have gets a lot of support, and enthusiasts have a fair bit of input. And extra promotions and perks.

Honestly, the above comparison/suggestion of a random AliExpress light just isn't in the same ballpark, not even playing on the same planet.

  • $7.95:torch with free shipping!!

    • +1

Yeap, and decent regardless no matter which way you like to look at it :-)

  • Do these work well with rechargeable AAA's, or do they need the higher voltage disposable batteries?

    • +3

They work fine. I just tested with an Aldi rechargable AAA. Nice and bright.

    • Usually high end torch brands use NiMH cells to test / advertise their AA lights due to the higher runtimes and current capacity. I can't think of any in recent memory that required alkalines.

    • They work well with eneloops

  • Are olight lanterns any good?

  • I've ordered one to replace my tiny TIKI torch which is failing. I contacted Nitecore and it looks like I bought a fake one from this deal.

  • love halloween, bought it for that reason!

  • How many $7.95 torches is everyone up to?

  • is this finished? i logged in my account and i cant get it?
