HONEYSAVEHGTSAVE

This is pretty much the defacto reference headphone.
I'd personally rank it quite few tiers above the 650/6xx and Sundara etc, on the tuning and timbre alone.

If you use code HONEYSAVE + chrome extension you can go through the sennhesier website directly for $359.

Also great price at $379 on the eBay Store with HGTSAVE.

  • Merged from Sennheiser in Ear Monitors: IE200 $161, IE600 $719 Shipped @ Sennheiser AU

The two best tuned sennheiser IEMs are on sale for some pretty good prices right now.

IE200 has good overall tuning and has the most comfortable shell out of all the <$200 options.
I'd personally take Hexa / EM6L over this due to the mid dip, but considering fit + the ie200 shell being aboslutely tiny, this is the one to go for small ears.

IE600 has some of the best bass in an IEM, short of TOTL stuff like the z1r but lightyears ahead of midrange units like the SA6, Variations etc.
The treble is a bit aggressive and it also has a mid dip, so for people who like bright + warm signatures and looking for excellent mid+subbass.

    $164 / $739 on eBay using HGTSAVE.

If you use code HONEYSAVE you can go through the sennhesier website directly for a bit better prices:

  • Great deal, although managed to get it for $331.17 on Sennheiser eBay a few months ago as part of the previous deal. Can highly recommend, although you might need to buy an AMP/DAC to properly drive it.

    • The $15 Apple USB-C to 3.5mm dongle drives these up to about 94dB, which means at 100% volume you can only safely listen for 1 hour a day before running into risking hearing damage - they have more than enough power.

However, If you want a bit more bass dynamics, a dac/amp combo around the $100 tier (q11, e10k, btr5 etc) would do it - shouldn't really need any more than that unless going down the tube route for a bit of distortion + warmth.

These do still sound hella good out of the apple dongle at around 50-60% volume though - but yeah, I agree, would not run these through phone jack or motherboard audio.

      • Well I was using a focusrite 2i2 gen 2, which I know is primarily an audio interface, but playing the HD600 through them was …a bit lackluster. I don't think it's so much a volume thing as it is a clarity thing. But this is likely a subjective thing, because I did notice that I had to turn it up quite a lot to reach the same level as my other headphones, so maybe it's just me psyching myself out. Imo.

      • Unless these are markedly different to the 6XX I would have to respectfully but strongly disagree. Not even close to loud enough with the USBC -> 3.5mm Apple adapter in to iPad Pro or iPhone 15. Pre-ordered a FiiO KA13 to hopefully combat this.

They do go loud enough when plugged in to an M1/M2 MacBook however.

        • Personally, I'm used to listening to around 60-70dB for hearing health reasons, so 94dB is painfully loud to me - but if you're used to louder volumes I can see how that would be a bit low, especially when most media is mastered at around -7dB (so effectively the apple dongle can only drive these at 87dB.)

  • Thanks OP - bought one. Been waiting on this for ages.

    • Do not use rtings to compare headphones…

      • Thought you would like that one.
Worth googling for people's subjective opinions instead, the other links are interesting.

      • Can I ask why not?

  • Do these have the old blue textured pattern like the image here suggests? Or will they have the boring new black plastic?

On the Sennheiser Ebay Store they're black: https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/r3gAAOSwyKplNvfZ/s-l1600.jpg

The old blue version is so much cooler.

  • What is a good set of headphones that won't break the bank? I don't have any pairs right now, but wanted to get something that is decent, but cost effective. Willing to spend up to about $250,. maybe up to $350 (I guess $350 is also considered cheap, but was wondering if there is anything decent for around $250?).

    • Look at beyerdydamics mate.
      Dt880 edition, 990pro etc..
      6xx

      • Alright, thanks, will do. Probably willing to spend a bit more for a decent set of headphones. I guess the prices I mentioned still are probably towards the cheaper side. What would good prices be for the ones you mentioned?

Edit : Just had a look. They look very good. Seems like they have similar versions of the same model. Not sure how to tell the difference. They also seem to have gaming geared headphones. Not sure if you can get all around ones that a both good for music/movies and also games?

        • Just got to research them, all slightly different.

Not sure if you can get all around ones that a both good for music/movies and also games?

Yes, don't see why not, as long as you have a seperate mix. Open headphones present well for all those things and still fairly high end compared to most speakers/soundbar, as far as detail and sound stage. Bass may be the thing you want enough of.

  • Recently got myself some DT900's mainly for gaming and a bit of music. May I ask kind sages of audio, how do these HD600 and HD6650S2 compare?
