  • Pixel 7 or the new Samsung Galaxy 23 FE?

    • +9

      Pixel 7

    • -3

I went from an s20 to s22 and regret it, ot had so many issues for months and smaller battery life too, i dont see the s23 any better. If i do upgrade again, anything is better than a samsung with the way their quality is going downhill just so people spend more money to replace it imo

      • +4

If you think Pixels are any better than you haven't owned one!

        • +4

yeah my wifes 6a is in for warranty repairs currently, have not been very impressed. She gave up on samsung too, surprisingly her cheap oppo reno z has been the most reliable phone she has had, which she is currently using while the pixel is being repaired.

          • @Stuntdriver: Nokia continues to be the worst value for performance, but the most resiliant of phones.
Their smartphones still go through the 11 stage test their old 'brick' phones used to.

I'm also yet to see a failed Motorola; and I have an oddly large group of friends who all ended up with them; and we all ride. So vibrations, rain, etc. they're copping a hard life for a phone.

I have the S23 (small one) and I have to say I'm impressed for it's size. Quality screen, quality camera and great battery life. Charging is slow but you can live with it. I heard the S22's battery was shocking so I'm glad I waited.

I also was moving from Pixel 7 Pro which has an average battery life at best, the S23's battery is much better.

Pixel 7 Pro felt cheap, hollow but the camera is amazing (great software and Screen). If you won't be using the camera as often the S23 will do you well but for the price the Pixel 7 at $650 is a much better buy.

If you're tight with money (like I am!) the Samsung S23FE can be had for less, assuming you have promotional vouchers from Samsung emails. It also has one extra camera!

You can get the SE for about $550 bundled up with the buds, a case, a powerbank and Samsung's equivalent of airtags with the right combination of vouchers

        • It was released this month…
          https://insights.samsung.com/2023/10/03/meet-the-new-galaxy-….

I should add that the current discounts on this end on Nov 1. Probably won't be discounted again until a few weeks later on Black Friday!

          • @PhilToinby: Any detail on how to get it down to 550? Looking to get it for Dad lowest I can find is 600 with a trade in and no buds

            • @Bargaing: I had a $200 code emailed to me from Samsung, which stacks with the existing $200 off. If you also add buds and a case, you can then also add the $50 voucher. Somehow the case is listed as free when you add it to the cart with the buds. The other tips is to use the Samsung Shop App which gives 10% off your first order. They all stack. I tried to also get a Loyalty voucher from contacting customer service, but that didn't stack for me. More info and comments here:

              • @PhilToinby: Could you please tell me how to get the $200 extra off from Samsung? Is it just random emailed? I have never received any email with extra discount from Samsung. Thank you.

                • @thuluu: I was sent an email on Oct 12, titled Galaxy S23 FE is here. The email contained the extra $200 voucher for trading in

          • @PhilToinby: He means the hardware which the S23 FE has is two years old.

            • @itsmoe: Sure. You could say the same about almost every phone excluding the Ultra range.

              • +1

@PhilToinby: You can't, the S23 FE is using a CPU from 2 years ago I think. It was announced in November 2021. so for $1000, it's a little too much.

                • @itsmoe: I wasn't suggesting you buy it for $1k. For me, if you can get the FE for around the $600 mark, or less with a trade-in then that's an ok deal.

I was going to bite, but I'll wait for the S23 to come down in price either on Black Friday or in a couple of months when the s24 is released

                  • @PhilToinby: I would say the S23 for around 6-700 is much more worth it. I wouldn't go for the FE for $600. You can get a much better phone for that much.

            @PhilToinby: I meant the specs

My Pixel 4a 5G has been faultless, so much so every time a deal came up with the newer model, I am hesitant to upgrade, touch wood.

    • As the 4a wouldn’t be worth much if sold, just keep it as a spare should something go amiss with new phone when the time comes.

      • +2

Unlimited google photos backup is quite worthwhile.

        • That's also possible with pixel experience on other phones

          • +4

@belongsinforums: Not on the newer ones. I think it stopped after Pixel 5.

            • +10

@rdhupar: He's referring to "pixel experience" being a custom rom that can be installed on some android phones. Moreso, some phones' model can be spoofed to enable 'unlimited google photos'. (p.s. i don't know why people throw information out stuff like that and not explain and create confusion)

              • -5

@DONMAI: My comment was pretty clear. A simple what is pixel experience google search would answer any questions but i guess reading is too hard

              • @DONMAI: Just to add onto this comment, crDroid custom rom also provide unlimited google photos backup. I have it up and running on an old ZUK Z2.

                https://crdroid.net/downloads

    • I concur. I have the 4G version (different phone and smaller, I know) and it recently came up as worth $5 on a trade-in. But I cannot fault it for what I want from a handset and I am also resisting the urge to update

    • My wife's 4a 5G died recently, just shy of 3 years old. After troubleshooting and researching the issue, it seems they have poor quality memory chips. Lots of people with the same issue where they die at 2.5-3 years, same error when trying to power on and plugging the phone into a PC.

Great phone while it lasted though. I am looking for a 6a/7a to replace it as a good camera is the main requirement.
I hope the Google have upped their game with hardware quality.

Price is NOT OK if needed urgent or not.

  • Reviews on GSM Arena are not encouraging

Get the 8 Pro. Should be some cheap ones around from the Optus deal. Amazing camera

  • Google store will price match, good way to use up credit… plus get 10% back with 2TB Google One storage plans…

  • +1

Had 2 Pixels already. No issues. Received Android 14 upgrade on 2nd day of release. Monthly updates with new software features and bug fixes. Better night time photos than iPhone.

  • +1

Pixels are great. Best android phones imo. We have had 4a/5/6a/7 Pro and now 8 and 8 pro. No real issues with them.

This is after coming from a long line of Samsung flag ships (from the original galaxy s and note line) and one plus and other android phones.

    • +4

Hard to have issues of you replace them every year.

  • Two month ago, trade in my 2 years old pixel 6 with trade in value plus pixel bouns, out of pocket $159 for pixel 7 is good deal.

7 is definitely better than 6 , with less heating ,better size and face unlock.

    • +3

a clueless comment! Phones aren't just about a specific speed benchmark.

      • -6

a whole suite of single core focused benchmarks*

but keep your head in the sand

        • So which $200 iPhone model are you comparing against (as a matter of interest)?

          • -2

@Borg: se 2 gives 1600 points that’s roughly android flagship performance

            • @abctoz: Mmm, nope I don't think so. Just a quick overview of the Google Pixel 7 vs Apple iPhone SE2 (2020).

I suppose it comes down to what you are happy with but I would take a Pixel 7 any day over it especially for camera, which is what many people choose the Pixels for. I have a Samsung S23 myself but having spent a week with the P7 last month, its a nice phone if at the right price.

              • @Borg: https://www.notebookcheck.net/index.php?id=127065&specs%5B%5…

Its better to use actual benchmarks than reviews that just average everything

there’s like ~5 web rendering benchmarks and the iPhone wins them all, by a big margin sometimes

note I’m just saying the iPhone is faster not anything else

                • @abctoz: $100 AMD chips faster ;)

                  • @Bii: yes but can’t find them in phones unfortunately

there are plenty of $10 that are faster nobody has use for them

    • Currently $2k or when new ;)

  • Huawei haters, please neg me as always.
Is Pixel 8 much better than Pixel 7? Had Pixel 7 for a while, I really can't find it better than my 5 year old Huawei Mate 20 Pro in many ways:
    1. Face unlock no where as good, in dim light, never happens, Huawei Mate 20 Pro unlocks everytime side by side.
    2. Finger unlock not always work, same as Mate 20 Pro
    3. Battery not even half as good despite the same usage with 10% bigger capacity than ~4kmAh on my 5 year old Huawei Mate 20 Pro. I took 100s of photos while traveling and 5-year-old Huawei Mate 20 Pro lasted ~6 hours, my Pixel 7 didn't even last 3 hours doing the same.
    4. Photos are not better, especially in low light and close-up shots.
    5. The power button above volume buttons, the opposite of all other 10+ Android phones we had, I'm the go-to guy in the family
    6. Neither has any lag, not even my 5 year old Huawei Mate 20 Pro
I basically copied all apps from 5 year old Huawei Mate 20 Pro to Pixel 7, so very much the same apps running in the same manner. I'm on lighter usage daily except when traveling, no gaming, not much video watching, ~30% brightness on both phones.
Except Pixel7 has native Android 14 with much more up-to-date updates, not much different to Huawei UI12 otherwise.
Anything else is Pixel 7 better than 5 year old Huawei Mate 20 Pro?
