  • Wait for tomorrow for $3 off 20.

    • +1

I suspect that the price will most likely jack to account for the US$3 off US$20 spend.

      • Yep the listing tells you. US$21.56.

  • Do you get a different price if going through Cashrewards?

    • +1

To get the price in the title, you have to make sure the url contains ?sourceType=562 at the end (as per the deal post).

Liking my HS10 if you need something smaller. These 18650 lights feel a bit bulky on the forehead sometimes. .

    • +3

If you're jogging (or similar) I would tend to agree. If you're just walking or doing things in the yard at night it's not too bad.

    • You can short-tube (18350 included) this if you wish.
      18650 ~44g 18350 ~24g

    • I went the opposite way - my 18650 HS40 wasn't doing it for me, so I went for the 21700 HS41.

30 grams more, but sweet sweet 5000 mAh battery and 4000 lumen turbo when needed. For normal use on medium it's very similar though.

      • +2

That's on special at sofirnlight.com for ~$US27 ($A43) using the extra 25% off code SNSALE25 if anyone's interested. Magnetic tail cap's handy.

  • +2

Looks like a clone for the Olight H2R.

    • Yeah i was thinking something similar

  • Be wary as sst40 is known for greenish tint.

    • Got a source for this? What emitter do you recommend?

      • +7

If you check out page 4 and 5 of the SST-40 data sheet then you'll see a bunch of different bins. On page 4, there are multiple bins below the dotted line (blackbody locus) that may appear rosy while the bins above the line appear green.

You can take the x and y coordinates from page 4 and pop them into this duv calculator to see how green or rosy it might be.

There are multiple things that could effect the green/rosiness. The glass lens or optic in a torch could change the delta u, v. How hard a LED is being driven (usually LEDs are less green on higher output modes like Turbo).

The beamshot photos on the product page appear to have hot spots with a greenish tint.

Nichia 519A emitters might have a duv close to zero (pure white). If you remove the dome, the colour temperature decreases and the duv decreases (rosy). It's not safe to dedome just any emitter… you could damage a Samsung LH351D emitter by removing the dome and exposing the phosphor layer.

Luminus SST20 emitters have some nice bins. They're less floody, and a bit smaller.

For a headlamp, I'd probably recommend a Nichia 144AR in an ArmyTek headlamp. It'll be floody and have a nice tint.

There aren't many substitutes for Luminus SST40 emitters. CREE XMLBWT US5/US6 3000K 90 CRI can be swapped in.

Damn that is bright! I’m Sold!

      • Looks amazing for the price I'm in.

Warm light is better for vegetation and you want minimize blue light if you want to sleep

    • +3

Yes, make sure to get a warm 2,000 lumen head lamp if you want to sleep.

  • Would this be suitable for computer/console repairs?

    • Yes, it is very powerful. I use mine for late night car repairs, I have very limited lighting in our carport area.

  • Is there any deals for 5k lumens+ for night fishing/squidding?

    • +1

On your head? There are $$$$$ head torches which might fit the bill, altho not 5K real Lm.

Otherwise you could always get a cheap bike helmet and strap a high powered torch on top. Heat and weight might get annoying.

  • Is there head torches with remote control? Id hate blinding the person Im talking to.

    • +6

It's on your head, it's not that hard to reach

      • but im lazy af :) Maybe not remote, just touch control, touching the light anywhere …

        • +1

          …. like touching a button?

        • Every torch I have ever owned is touch control

          • @ohyesss: Touch the case and find and press the button, applying pressure sideways, so you need to grab both ends of the headlamp, are different actions.

            • @[Deactivated]: Where would you keep the remote that makes it quicker then pressing a button on your head?

** you edited as I was replying

              • @ohyesss:

Where would you keep the remote

Dunno … a wrist band with a little button, in my pocket … I havent really thought this through, lol

Its just I think stiff side button on your head is a design fault for headlamps, its fine for normal torches. And you don't see the button, you need to feel-find it first.

    • +1

I have the Everbeam H6 Pro from Amazon and this has a sensor that allows you to wave your hand in front of the headlamp to turn the light on or off when it's on Sensor Mode. Works very well, no need to fidget to find the button. I find it very handy when working with the light, especially when my hands are dirty or I have something in my hands.

    • There are head lights with 'hand wave' remotes. Don't know about quality or longevity. I'll see if I can find a link.

Have one from a few years ago. Still works very well. In fact all my Sofirn flashlights have been very good.

  • Looks remarkably like my Skilhunt H04, which I think was one of my earliest and best OzBargain purchases. Every time I use it, I'm glad I bought it.

So to affirm my own good choices, I bought two of these.

  • Cheers OP. Bought one.

    • Quick delivery as well, received today.
Nicely built unit, and feels very sturdy and bright.
Accidentally pointed the torch at my eyes while checking it out, and I am seeing all kind of flashes 😂
It is bright! Can't wait to use it during camping.

  • You load 16 tons, whaddaya get?!

  • Price has gone up to US $22.42. DEAL BREAKER!

    • Back down.

  • Went through Cashrewards which jacked the price up due to the current AliExpress promo to get a final price of US $21.12.

  • Anyone knows where to get a 18650 battery that works with this?

    The stock battery is rubbish

    • Mine seemed fine but Im not a super heavy user. Used it camping for a couple fo nights. What's the problem with yours?

    • +2

Vape shops are usually a good source for quality 18650s, as they are careful about avoiding fakes.

Though I am surprised you have had issues with the Sofirn cell. While nothing special, they are generally well regarded. I capacity test cells when I get them, and down the track for any that get heavy use, and out of the too many torches I own, none of the Sofirn cells have been a problem. (That said, it's mostly my 21700 and 26650 batteries that get major use, but my 18650 based Sofirn SC18 is used for night dog walks).

The Sofirn 18650 cells are probably not rated for very high current output, but the HS40 isn't very demanding in that regard. Under 5A on turbo, dropping off over a few minutes as it thermally throttles. About 1.5A at sustained output.

Out of interest, what sort of issue did you have?

      • It doesn't turn on unless it's on charge!!

Once I received it, I plugged it in and it turned on. But as soon as I take it off the charge it won't even turn on…you think I got a dud?

Problem is I bought it in September and only tested just before I was due to go camping two weeks ago!

        • Yep you got a dud. Might still be time to go back to them.

          • @Punkboy: I'm sure they would respond favourably if it's a dud. Most likely though it's a case of not removing the orange plastic battery isolator disk mentioned by Prong below, or possibly he reinserted the battery the wrong way around. Both easy mistakes to make, and rectify.

Batteries usually come about 60+% charged so it's possible (though very unlikely) the battery was flat by the time he tested it, in which case charging it for a couple of hours then testing it would tell if he had a dud. It will take up to 4 hrs to recharge from empty.

          @duckygun

Did you open the torch and take the battery out?

I ask because Sofirn lights come with a disc of cardboard on the negative end of the battery for shipping. Some of the torches come with a tag that reminds you, some don't.

It seems obvious, but even knowing this, I have been caught me out more than once until I remember!

I use repurposed Lap Top 18650 batteries in my budget torches.

    • Same here, or power tool batteries.

      • Do you guys do anything to them electrically?

  • I've had one of these for a year or so and I am more than happy to recommend it. I paid way more than that though so I am going to order some for friends.
