YouTube Premium Family Plan Increase to $32.99 a Month

Just received an email from Google saying that our Family plan is increasing from $17.99 to $32.99 a month. This represents an 83% increase. Not sure how this is justified, seems completely ridiculous.

You are absolutely right. I think youtube gets most of its money from apple users.

      • Nothing says "I don't care" like commenting, right champ

    • +3

I cast YouTube from newpipe w/sponsorblock or revanced to my TV.

      No ads and costs nothing.

If it's android tv smart tube next is pretty good.

just take a quick trip to india, or whatever is currently the current choice for cheapest vpn youtube workaround.

yes there is adblockers - but youtube looks to be putting up barriers to this slowly
yes there is vpn/app work arounds - but cbf

    • +1

they'll be cracking down on vpn subscriptions soon enough, Netflix style.

  • yeah, a $5 increase is a big one, my dad is legit in India atm and I have family over there at least twice a year, thinking of getting them to set up a account for me

    • +3

u can just use a vpn dude

      • +1

i think you need an Indian card too now, which shouldn't be a problem if you know someone there who can easily afford it.

…and they wonder why people use Ad blockers.

    • +1

Heard they're blocking ad blockers world wide, there's some that still work for now but I'd expect those days are numbered.

      • +4

The day adblockers are banned, I will stop consuming youtube.

      • They've gone after the most popular ad blockers, so users of Ublock Origin were getting affected. My understanding is they moved their ads to the same domains as the videos themselves, so the exclusion lists stopped working. The developers countered pretty quickly and it works again. They'll be going back and forth for a while.

I use Fadblock for Firefox, which hasn't been affected. I like it because it technically loads the ad then skips it instantly so a) the video maker gets paid and b) the way Youtube is detecting ad blockers doesn't seem to detect it.

    • Google need to look at Steam/Valve, and give people value.
Treat people like pirates they will only dig their heals in, long term Google will lose.
I hope X pushes more video, and better value and pricing.

      • Treat people like pirates they will only dig their heals in, long term Google will lose.

Are they not just like pirates?

YouTube says "watch this ad in exchange for watching this video so we can pay for the infrastructure and the creators".

People say "no I will block ads and watch this video for free so neither you nor the creators can make any money".

Obviously in a post about adblockers this will get negged to hell and back. But let's call a spade a spade.

        • "But let's call a spade a spade"
Yet the people calling for it don't have the best integrity nor do Google/Alphabet.

          • @Forth: A spade is still a spade. In the end the creators are the biggest losers.

            • @eug: Cry me a river

              • -1

@Forth: "me me me meeeeee". :)

  • $1.70 for individual in Turkey

    • +7

It was TRY ₺29.99, Au will vary depending on the two currencies trading at the time of your bill.

You will get an email, I just got one. Turkish Family Plan goes from TRY ₺59.99 to TRY ₺115.99. That is currently Au $3.29 going to $6.36.

      • +2

Still cheap, just not as cheap as it once was, like everything these days. Still better than the OZ tax.

        • Yeah, I am staying with it.

          • @snuke: Yeah I still have Youtube & Netflix working from Turkey….will keep until my Ccard gets rejected

            • @MonkeyMagic1977: I have Netflix via Turkey too, $7.79 was my last billing for it, and no extra charge for family usage. Think I would bail at $22.99 plus family charge.

      • Is the individual plan increasing? Can't find anything.

      • I signed up with VPN in Argentina
Got email to say that cost of premium is going up to 869 Pesos
        That's AUD$3.86 at current conversion.

        • +3

Yeah, I feel sorry for the Argies - was 119 (or 179 for family) per month in 2022, then went to 389 (individual) for 2023 and now going to 869. Still, as you say, it is less than $4 for us so I'm not complaining for the convenience of using it on my TV.

        • +1

So you need a VPN to sign up to your Google account. Once signed up, can you use Youtube and Youtube Music freely in Australia without any VPN ?

  • +37

    Redtube is still free 👍🏼

    • +3

is this a proxy for YouTube?

    • +3

I had to google that and now it replaces yt….lol

  • +1

YouTube Music Premium is now the same cost as Spotify Premium too $12.99/$20.99.

YouTube Premium being an extra $12 for families on top of that means $12 a month to block ads? Lol.

  • Yep. That effing stings, I got the same one.

But access for 5 people to YT Music and Ad-free YT for $32 is, realistically, not bad. (I'm trying to placate myself!)

    • +17

I locked in a year of Prime for $59. It includes free delivery and early access to deals, Prime Video, Prime Music, Prime Reading, Prime Gaming and Twitch benefits. While Prime Music does come with it's limitations, that's $4.91/month for all of that.

YouTube wants to charge $17 a month for music and no ads. That's taking the piss.

      • Excellent value - but i have no use for majority of those services you mentioned, unfortunately

        • +5

That's the thing I don't either. I don't use Prime Music, Prime Reading, Prime Gaming, Prime Photos or Twitch but for less than $5 a month it's worth having just for Prime Video and deliveries.

YouTube Premium even if you're using everything it offers it's still a rip off at $17.

.. and Amazon has big budget original TV shows they pay millions for. YouTube has the average Joe make everything and pay them an absolute pittance. Don't get me wrong, YouTube is great but if Amazon can afford to spend millions on original TV shows and charge $5 a month, YouTube can afford to pay YouTubers more or charge subscribers less.

          • @pennypincher98: it's a numbers game isn't it? aren't the big channels like millionaires?

      • +1

Prime music that’s part of the subscription is really poor though. It’s not much better than a radio station now.

        • +1

Play any song on demand and offline from All access playlist (1 playlist up to 50 songs) otherwise shuffle play any playlist (which you can create), album, artist etc + no ads.

It's not amazing and I don't use it but it's miles better than something like Spotify Free.

          • +1

@pennypincher98: It seems like they have changed it again then, it went from a great free service to a shuffle only radio service, now to what you say (still not great)
No way as good as it used to be year back.

            • @PVA: Yeah there was more free options or cheaper options before, Deezer used to be legitimately free Spotify Premium with maybe one 10 second ad an hour.

      • Yeah I think prime does that as they make shit tons from deliveries. I know they do from me!

      • How does Prime Music compare to Youtube Music? Is there an easy way to copy over my playlists?

Have both platforms and we're Google Home-integrated but looking to drop Youtube with the price increase.

        • +1

I wouldn't use Prime Music as your sole music service. It's good for if you listen to a single artist or album a lot, or less than 50 songs on repeat but unless you add a song to your All Access Playlist you can't just search up any song and play it (it shuffle plays)

  • +10

This is absolutely bonkers. I got the same email. I don't know who ever thought an 83% increase could ever be justified. This has sent me looking for cheap Turkey/Ukraine/Argentina VPN deals. But apparently those loopholes are being closed as well?

Surely they will lose a tonne of subscribers over this. I'm going to complain via their feedback form, but I don't expect they'll even look at it.

And I won't be watching ads on YouTube, so I guess I just won't be using YouTube or YouTube Music at all anymore!

    • +3

Have they all been closed? If so time to go back and sail the seas

  • +8

Not thrilled to see the supposed lifetime early adopter discount going away. Going from $9.99 to 16.99 which is a big jump.

    • +3

Me too. They should of kept it cheaper for the loyal members rather than bump it up to what the new subscribers who just joined now pay.

      • +1

Yeah. I didn’t expect $9.99 for life, but thought the $2 discount over later signups might remain in place.

      • +10

@Methodical: There is "No Such Thing as Loyalty" when it comes to Corporate Greed.

    • +1

      Same here

  • Really annoying, I knew I was paying a lower rate than new subscribers but was hoping it would continue in perpetuity.

That being said I use a shit ton of YouTube, especially on mobile. I’ll be able to justify it by changing by mobile plan by April. Currently paying $72/mo for a Telstra plan like an idiot. Will definitely switch to something cheaper.

    • $72 a month? I hope that comes with a free phone

    • +2

Switch to Boost. It's basically Telstra, but cheaper.

      • Boost has so many deals on here. Will definitely consider switching to them. I live in metro Sydney anyway.

        • +1

Do it. If your data usage isn't very high, you should be able to halve your costs.

    • +1

i switched to the boost 365 day plan for $200 or something. I dont use that much internet and saving hundreds a year on this alone (previously was telstra 49/m)

  • +4

Having avoided the trips to Turkey and India thus far, looks like I'll need to research these trips in 3 months.

What's everyone's best value trips now? Is there a risk of Google banning your account after your trip?

    • +2

I had issues creating a Turkish family (couldn't get my ING card to accept), but Philippines worked for me and it's currently $6.64/month for the 6-person family plan.

      • How do you make a turkish family account? Does everyone in the family need a turkish account?

  • +7

Contemplating cancelling Premium. Hope my kids like ads

    • +3

this is my main reason why i've kept YT Prem for family. Otherwise i'd cancel already. argh so annoying

  • Is there an APK that lets me stream YouTube audio with the screen off? I drive a lot.

    • +4

      On your phone, use NewPipe.

      • Or PipePipe. I used to use NewPipe though the other has better searches and NP had some crashing issues that made it unusable.

    • Revanced

    • Firefox browser and Background playback add-on. Ublock origin works as well

ReVanced app works too but takes some setup. Follow guide on ReVanced reddit

This kind of behaviour (not just Youtube, but Netflix, etc.) was what I expected to happen. In general these are US companies, and they at heart think in terms of cable subscription costs. That's where they think they are going to get to.

Problem however, is that sane people will pay for one or two providers, at $10pm maximum - so silly prices just lead to people dropping services, and then to keep the numbers reporting to shareholders up, they increase the prices even further. Cue vicious cycle to death (which is where many of the streamers are going to go within a year or two).

The battle will be won by the first company to realise that, actually, if you are displaying adverts, you should be PAYING the viewer to watch those ads, particularly if their demographics are good. Trying to charge for, or attack users, is a recipe for a death spiral.

Frankly, people are getting mightly fed up with customer focused business becoming more and more user hostile. Hating your customers or treating them badly is a recipe for bankrupcy.

    • The battle will be won by the first company to realise that, actually, if you are displaying adverts, you should be PAYING the viewer to watch those ads, particularly if their demographics are good. Trying to charge for, or attack users, is a recipe for a death spiral.

Who should pay the content creators and the massive, massive infrastructure needed to provide a video streaming service to the whole world?

  • +4

My "family" has been full since I first subscribed at $12AUD/month back when it launched.
Only half actually pay me, because I just had the space so I figured who cares, I'd be paying it either way.

Then the price went to $18. I started to care, but still not enough to ask the others for the few bucks a month.

Now? Well, everyone in the family is now required to pay $5.50 each if they wish to continue being my children.
    Pretty unreasonably large increase.

  • +4

Would gladly pay a small monthly fee for no ads but without subsidizing Youtube music. Until that happens, Smarttube next and Revanced will continue to get a workout.

  • +4

My individual price went up 4x luckily I live in Argentina so it's still only about $5/AUD a month but bloody hell YouTube are milking it.

Using it because I like ad free on google devices throughout the house so still worthwhile…for now.

    • Got an email this morning, Argentina premium price is increasing from 699 to 1569 ARS, so from ~$3aud to ~$7

      • +1

Got this too, considered dumping it but looking at the aud prices - I’m all good with it.

      • Is that the family plan? Mines just individual, went from 389 to 869 ARS in the email they sent.

Better deal with family plan but for some reason my account isn't offered it, there has never been an option to select a family plan only solo per month (wish I could pay it yearly).

    • +15

Why would anyone read prior comments that cover the question I wish to ask???????????

  • +6

Right timing, blackmailing for using adblockers and now increase price for the premium. LOL

    • It just says death spiral.
Well it's been a good 20 year run.

  • +6

I pay $4 a month for Youtube Premium India and I share it with 5 friends (I don't charge them because I'm not that tight ass yet). For less than a dollar a month, my music and youtube video experience has been amazing

  • +5

Ridiculous, and they wonder why people pirate
    Bring back Limewire

  • +1

How do I block ads on a smart tv?

    • +3

If you have a TV with Android/Google TV, install SmartTube.

      • Does it definitely work? From what Im reading, they just blocked all they adblockers from working??

        • When did you read this?
I was watching last night no problems. They did release an update yesterday which may have helped…

          • @Warchest: Just from googling, it talks about how YouTube are cracking down on adblockers. But I see this is a separate app as such. I just download to Sony TV. So if you have no actual paid subscription, but signed in to your account, you get not ads on Smarttube right?

            • @mossy1: Correct! And adds Sponsorblock by default, which skips in-video ads.

  • My family plan has gone from $29 to $42.99?

    • how?

Mine went from $23 to $33

    • +1

Have you subscribed via in app purchase on the app store? They'll sting you more for that versus the website.

      • +2

Yes, I didn’t know I was being ripped off the whole time :(

        • Yeah I couldn't believe it when I first heard about it but at least now you know ¯\(ツ)/¯

        • My take is ‘never do in app purchases’ if an alternative way of paying exists. And I look for that alternative:)
