YouTube Premium Family Plan Increase to $32.99 a Month

Just received an email from Google saying that our Family plan is increasing from $17.99 to $32.99 a month. This represents an 83% increase. Not sure how this is justified, seems completely ridiculous.

    • Sorry to tell you but there's a mass exodus of adblockers, on any chrome/chromium based browser. Your best bet going this route is Firefox + Ublock Origin. Good luck to you.

There is. But there will always be workarounds or alternatives. When push comes to shove and all adblockers stops working will simply be not using YT anymore. Good luck google asking us to pay $40/mo 😂

  • I'm shocked 3 pages of peeps aren't using VPN subs. Hand in your OzB badges immediately.

  • Reflecting on it, my legacy $9.99 discounted YouTube Premium rate was a big factor in why I hadn’t moved off Google Workspaces to FastMail. Closing my Workspace account would have meant losing that discounted subscription. Once the price goes up and I’m forced into current market rate, probably a good chance for me to really evaluate if I stick to Google Workspace or cut that subscription out also.

Chances are I’ll stick to YouTube Premium in some form, but I’ll certainly be looking at overseas family account options with the price hike and my other Google paid subscription now becomes a lot easier to justify switching up. More than happy to transition to a free Google account for the YouTube stuff since I have no uploaded content etc tied to the account, just the plan and it’s discounted rate. Frankly it’ll probably be a net gain since Google has really treated Workspace accounts as second class when it comes to things like Google Assistant and the like.

  • If you're using YouTube premium, have a look at the stats that tell you how much YouTube you are actually watching. (For me, it's depressing).

Btw, YouTube music is included with premium.

Not saying au premium is a good or bad deal, but you can assess whether it's worth the value

I was recently rankled by increasingly long ad interruptions during my YouTube watching, and investigated the paid option - something about Music only or Premium including videos

I also googled reviews - the last of which recommended no need to pay as it adds little value to the free option - and anyhoo if I'm watching a random video and it suddenly cuts off into an ad, I just close the page - I'm sure google can also track such 'lost opportunities' to advertise - these days I no longer think of google as the most helpful search engine - I consider it an advertising platform designed to get me to spend money - so as I treat other advertisers, if you wanna get in my face, Ima shut you down, turn the other way, and probably not come back to that again - C ya (or maybe not) !

  • To continue delivering great service and features, we’re increasing your price to TRY 115.99 /month.

  • They are double dipping with the recent adblock blacklisting.

All of these streaming services are getting greedy and starting to price gouge. I knew this would happen. Corporate greed is rife. People laugh that i still have a DVD collection that I still watch but I'll be the last one laughing when they are paying through the nose to watch classic movies and TV shows they can't find elsewhere.

  • Question is whether people who watch Youtube Free actually buy stuff they see in the ads?

The inability to skip some ads and you're forced to watch it, is subliminal programming still a valid marketing strategy or are people more resistant to it in 2023.

Tried turkey and India a while ago and wouldn't accept any payment method including wise and revolut.

Just cancelled again and went through VPN to Ukraine and all good. Apparently Phillipines might be ok too. Didn't have to make new payment profile or anything, just put in regular debit card. ~$6.50 per month for family.

  • No increase email for my account made whilst I 'was' in India yet. Maybe because I resigned up with a new card recently (lost my old card)?

    • Just wondering, did you replace the credit card with a new Indian bank issued card or aussie bank issued card?

My credit card signed up with Indian premium youtube is about to expired, can I just updated with new expiry date?

      • +1

        Westpac card… Aussie.

I don't know about just changing the expiry date, sorry maybe that's a thing or maybe it's the different card number….

  • need a card from billing country?

Have paid VPN service and it was not allowing me to do the Ukraine access. Do everything on your phone with VPN.lat app which worked. Signed up to premium via website not directly through apps on youtube as well. Got it working now for my family plan.

  • For the first time, I have to consider going VPN way. It is way too expensive tbh.

Confirming I was successful in cancelling current Australian family premium subscription, then after a bit connected to Ukraine server via NordVPN and was able to sign up to the Ukrainian price family premium account. CBA C/C used successfully. Charged ~$6.43AUD

  • Time for me to unsubscribe from YouTube Family Premium.
Maybe I'll read a book instead? (YouTube the book, now free on Amazon kindle)

  • I assume most people pay for this to get ad free YT on their phones. If you're on Android look up Revanced or Newpipe.
Don't acquiesce to the multi billion dollar corporation's greed.

  • You could use uBlock Origin to eliminate ads on youtube on your pc. Seems to be working for now.

    • I have had that for a long time and I am getting the 'you appear to have a ad-blocker' warning notifications from YouTube. It got so annoying I just quit cold turkey. Is your set up different that you aren't getting the pop-ups?

  • Can someone please post a spreadsheet and sticky the thread with the new (increased) prices for the 4 cheapest countries?

  • And I was just thinking to get it :| bye bye then

I find adguard mobile a pretty good alternative, 1 time payment and it blocks YouTube and all other ads in Safari. Best to wait until they have a sale for the unlimited passes if you like it

  • is there any workaround to block ads in youtube app on iso ?

  • What’s the best country to sign up with now? India?

  • Unbelievable!
    We cant afford that.
Back to watching ads and therefor less youtube

  • wtf it's more expensive than netflix and disney plus, they don't even have original content

They do run the absolutely massive infrastructure worldwide that allows people to upload over 500 hours of video every minute for free. Just imagine the networking, storage, server, and staffing costs to run all of that.

      • sounds like they're about to "accidentally" lose half a decade's worth of videos.
