  • How much better is this than the Brevilles that are on sale recently

    • +27

      Exactly 6x better than a BES920

      • +10

Great I bought 6, thanks OP

        • +10

one for each rental property ? with growing immigration you can up the rent without providing extra amenities like a coffee machine.

    • +2

I purchased this yesterday to replace a Breville Oracle Touch that stopped heating up after its first descale and needed to be sent away for repairs (common issue according to online search - just wish I realised that prior to the descale)… so hopefully a lot better. Just need to wait for delivery.

      • +1

BES920 + SG Pro at home
        Oracle touch at office

I can dial in a better shot at home, and better texturing as well.

    • -2

      Agreed

    • +7

The BES920 dual boiler is actually better imho, you can modify it to gain water flow control, ideal if you drink light/medium roasts. Whereas you can only get a classic 9 bar shot on the Linea mini but it does it pretty much flawlessly.

      • +1

The BES920 dual boiler is actually better imho

        I think that too.

In terms of functionality - Breville is better.

In terms of price - Linea Mini is better (from my digital cameras experience where bigger numbers are better)

In terms of reliability - I want to hear from Linea Mini users when was their first service/repair and how much it was.

        • +3

This is the Micra, not the Mini. The Micra is specifically intended for home use, so is a bit more compact.

          • +1

            @stjep: Ouch, my bad.
Still everything I said is valid. Breville Dual Boiler looks even better now. :)

      • +1

        I second this.
Done the mod as well. Im happy with the Dual Boiler, you can do back to back milk steam with no issue.

        • How do you steam milk while pulling shots?

          • +10

@pizzaguy: Start the shot and start steaming the milk….

          • +1

@pizzaguy: I start steaming milk first and once it reaches about 40 degrees, I press button for a single shot. By the time milk reaches 65 the shot is complete.

          • +1

@pizzaguy: That is the whole point of dual boilers. This is why they are more expensive than single boiler machines.

        • +1

The Micra is also a double boiler.

      • +1

If you used both machines afterwards all consumer coffee machines like the BES920 will feel cheap and plasticy. The LM has a complete stainless steel casing and the group head has a nice hefty weight to it. Even just slotting the group head into place will have a nice mechanical feeling. The paddles and turny nobs one can only describe as chefs kiss, The difference will be night and day.

        • +8

For an extra 5K it would want to be. :)

      • +2

I won't trade the Marzocco app for anything. Being able to turn it on from bed and have the boiler reach temp before getting up is such a gift to my laziness.

you can modify it to gain water flow control, ideal if you drink light/medium roasts

I reserve my light roasts for pourover as I think it does a better job at pulling out the flavour notes, but that's neat.

        • I think some of the higher end brevilles have auto power on. Not the same thing as switching on from bed, but for people who drink coffee at the same time each day is probably useful.

          • +2

@16k-zx81: I use a SwitchBot on my Oracle for “switching on from bed”. Works well, app controlled and very cheap.

        • As much as I would like to upgrade, I won't be any time soon. Using a Gaggia classic with PID and flow control, also have an old school wall socket timer so it turns on at 5:45 and off at 3pm.
Next machine will probably be a LM, but not for quite a while.

          • @DeToxin:

            Gaggia classic

            Those are rock solid machines.

it turns on at 5:45 and off at 3pm

Is there no concern of scale buildup from the water being hot and pressurised for so long?

            • @stjep: To be honest I havent even thought about scale buildup until yesterday.
Strange timing that you ask though because I ordered come cafetto machine cleaner and descaler last night 🤔
I think we have quite soft water where I live too, when I bought the gaggia it came with a pH testing kit which iirc indicated around pH 6.
No problems so far, only had it for 1 year though.

              • @DeToxin: Fair enough. LM are very particular about the water so you have to check a bunch of minerals to make sure it's in line with their spec. Most, but not all, are reported by the water supplier, but they will void a warranty if it's not in spec. Real over the top.

                • @stjep: Yeah I think if you're spending 6k on a LM it's probably worth going the extra and plumbing it up with filters

                  • +1

@DeToxin: Once you deduct the grinder and the free coffee it's only just over $4k…

I didn't plumb in but I had a plumber install filters.

LM will extend a warranty if you do regular servicing with an approved tech so that's kinda nice.

  • +8

    Yeah nah

  • +3

    Any cashback?

    • +21

$5 cash back every time you don't buy a coffee from a Cafe?

  • +1

For not much more you can buy a commercial La Marzocco machine, start a cafe and $$$

    • You're missing step 3 - ???

    • +9

It's the RRP, but you get a ~$1000 grinder included. Downvoting is only for when you can find the same item cheaper, not because you think it's a waste.

      • +10

Feels like recently folk neg on a whim as if they're offered something for them only.

        Null added value.

        • The nature of being able to downvote.

          • +2

@Meconium: Pretty amazing that OzB allows to cancel others' votes by downvoting them.

            • @pizzaguy: Way of the world these days. Censorship through shouting louder.

    • +2

I’d rather to see they took that grinder off the deal n make coffee machine more affordable

Who doesnt have a proper grinder? Anyway Mazzer is overkill for 3 or 4 dose grinding a day

      • +2

I totally agree but there's obviously some kind of agreement that LM has with mazer to run this deal so it's not like they're copping the full cost. Best solution is to sell the grinder BNIB if you already have one you prefer

        • +1

They ran the same promo with Mahlkönig back in June. And every coffee roaster has been running a competition to win a Micra. I think it's just LM trying to get the Micra out there as its new.

      • -2

Who doesnt have a proper grinder?

Most people who don't already have a high end espresso machine.

The best your average person has is the Breville, and it's trash for espresso.

        • Have you ever owned a breville? The breville dual boiler is great for espresso.

          • +1

@Khartoum: I think the comment was about Breville's grinder.
While I rate Breville Dual Boiler to be in the top of machines their grinder is barely making into lowers espresso grinders category.

          • @Khartoum: I am specifically talking about the Breville freestanding grinder. It is well known for not being consistent for espresso.

I also owned one and it was fine for pourover but nothing finer.

        • This is true

  • Sorry, what, for a Mazzer mini?

"Complementary grinder & 12 months of coffee ($2150 of value)."

    • Micra, not Mini. The Mini package is $8499.

      • +1

No, the Mazzer mini is the grinder which costs around $1000 alone. I was questioning how a year's worth of coffee was worth an extra thousand (I suppose if it's a couple kilos a month).

        • I also thought that was kinda expensive initially until I added up my usual coffee purchases, about 3* $19 250g bags a fortnight.. ends up being ~$1400 a year ☠️

I should really shop around for options…

          • +2

@DeToxin: I would rate Inglewood as the best budget option which pops up here (routinely <$30/kg). That said, I roast my own coffee :D

        • Ah doy, I can't read.

  • I dropped into La Marzocco last week. They're moving the remaining Mazzer stock to make space for the new La Marzocco Pico grinder. White and Black are available at the moment - stainless, blue, red, and yellow on the way

    • What is the discount on the mazzer tho?

      • You buy an espresso machine - you get a free Mazzer grinder. I was told this is the end of the road for Mazzer grinders at LM Australia

  • +3

Thanks OP bought two. One for the kitchen and one for the BBQ area. People expect more when I'm entertaining them with a few snags. Melbourne amirite?

    • +3

you forgot the powder room coffee machine

    • +4

You don't have a jester to entertain your guests?
      Landless peasant.

  • -4

Thanks. Grabbed TWO. One for the home and one for the campervan

  • -1

    Thanks OP, I grabbed 3.
I think it is ideal to have 1 on the bedroom level, 1 on the living level and 1 in the servant's quarters. I feel like my coffee tastes gritty when I know that the servants have used the same machine as me (YUCK!)

  • No complimentary accessories kit this time?

  • +1

I had my BES920 for last 5 years, never had any problem. Whereas I friend's Linea Mini, nah… expensive but unreliable.

    • Yeah, I read some complaints online about Linda Mini being not as reliable as expected…

  • -1

Another great OzBargain. Six thousand bucks to make a cup of coffee.

    • +8

…. wait till this guy hears about the $49,990 deal to get from A to B in a car.

  • Given the price increases of ordering coffee outside, this is a bargain and will pay itself off over the next 2-3 years I'm sure

  • +2

I recently tried out this machine at a trade show and was very impressed, although it’s way out of my price range. It pretty much feels like their larger commercial grade machines but shrunk down.

  • -1

Is this good enough for espresso?

    • +1

Can probably pull an okay shot.

    • "yeah but my 5 year old $649 Breville is waaaay better"

  • I read Allpress Coffee as Aliexpress Coffee. I guess i need a cuppa now.

    • Lol. Same. Did a double take then realised.

  • Keep in mind these Italian machines are made to last 40years so there is a second hand market ….gumtree, coffee snobs etc. You can get a fantastic machine for $1500-$2000. That's the way to play it.

    • +2

Lol. "Made to last 40 years" and yet they only give you a 2 year warranty! The same warranty as a Breville and yet 10 times the price. It's a hard "no" from me.

    • these Italian machines are made to last 40years

Sorry my friend… Not La Marzocco Linea Mini/Micra.

  • I've had the same Rancilio Silvia since 2010 and with annual DIY servicing hasn't missed a beat and makes the perfect coffee. For a 1/5 of the price of this one.

    • Nice I have a V6, what annual stuff do you do? I installed the PID kit, so so good wish I did sooner.

      • I've been doing full manual, I've looked at the PID kits but only making about 2 cups a day so not really justified. If this one dies ill buy another and do a PID Kit. Maintenance just running Vinegar through every few months to clean scale build up, dismantle and clean group head/filter every few months, changing the rubber gaskets of the group head and filter every few years. I've had to reset the thermostat a few times due to being left on (push button) and clean up some corrosion and replace a wire for the boiler. Have replaced gaskets in the steam wand also. But all cheap, minor, easy to do stuff with a few spanners and screw drivers. they are very basic units. Including this $6000 piece of art.

** Make sure to isolate from power before removing the covers **

  • For what it's worth, I got one of these the last time they were at this price and it was a great decision. I can't help with comparisons to other machines of this quality but it is far, far superior to the $1000 DeLonghi it replaced.
    Just sayin'.

    • Replacing $1000 DeLonghi with $1000 Breville Dual Boiler will be a good upgrade too.
Will be much better value for money too.
      Just saying'.
      :)

      • +2

I upgraded from the BDB which i loved to this during the last sale and was skeptical about how much better the micra would be vs the price increase. Can say without a doubt that I've had no regrets at all. The machine runs like a dream, consistent shots, quiet rotary pump, built like a truck. Milk steamer is next level. The BDB is just a kitchen appliance compared to the micra. Yes its expensive, but if you get a chance to live with the LMLu, you'll see where that value is. Just sayin'

  • +1

Do I replace my bes920 which has been making my milky coffee for five years now, or would this just be fiddlier?

    • +1

I would upgrade grinder. BES920 is great! Eureka Mignon or a Stile would be neat if budget permits.

  • I need a coffee machine for the shed. This should be good enough. Just.

  • +1

I want one so much. SO pretty. Unreliable though? Wow
