Just got this couple days ago after finally giving up on the NBN. I was getting 30+ dropouts today and I knew they were dropouts because my Apple TV home hub would tell me its disconnected and then connected again so far I’ve not had an issue or any drop outs, and my download speeds are about 640 and upload 40.

It was also the easiest Internet I ever set up, literally plugged it in didn’t go through any set up. It just worked out of the box, Sim card already installed.

I also don’t like Telstra and avoid them if I can.

  • I'm currently stuck with FTTN, paying $75 for 50/20, only using about 300-400Gb a month.
Are there any downsides to paying $10 more for this to get significantly more speed?

    • +5

Yes you need to get this.

    • +3

Are you a gamer?. If you are the latency on mobile broadband while doing online multiplayer would suck compared to even FTTN. If you just browse the internet or watch streaming videos it will be fine.

  • Oh no, here we go again…

  • +1

Switched to this from other 5G home internet providers such as Optus (hourly dropouts with no fix) after giving up on NBN. Very happy been using this for a few years now. Zero issues worth paying slight premium + bonus Telstra points!

  • I'm trying to sign up, but getting: Unable to process request. The contact is not authorised to make this change.
Anyone else in the same boat and found a solution?

It's making it appear as if you're not the account holder.

Are you the actual account holder?. Only the account holder can make changes to the account.

If Telstra 5G Home Internet isn’t yet in my area (have 5G mobile coverage) , can I use other address to get the deal and move to my place?

    • +1

No. The sim/modem is somehow geo-locked to the address you register with

    • if its just couple of blocks away it should be fine. I did exactly that as it was not available on my address but was available for the address just across the road. It worth a shot, if it doesn’t work you can always return within 30 days

    • +1

Lots of 5G towers within sight of me yet "Not avail at my address" (not that I want it). Wonder how they determine who is allowed it as 5G on mobile via Boost (aka Telstra) is fast here.?

      • +1

Whoever negged, that's fine however please explain why rather than being a "moran" and negging without explaination as to why. Is there something wrong with my query?

      • +1

They don’t oversubscribe their tower capacity and likely don’t have enough bandwidth to accommodate you as an additional customer around that area. Keep
trying in the future as eventually some will cancel or capacity may be added.

        • Ah ok, makes sense. thanks. 5G isn't something I need but more as a matter of interest.

  • Was a great deal last time it was offered as it included 12 months of Kayo, but doesn't look like it's included this time?

    • +1

Nope, you click on the link for a package deal and the prices are just the regular ones Kayo offers to everyone. Could there be an incentive deal coming for Black Friday, maybe?

  • I got a letter in the post sometime ago saying that 1000gb allowance is increased to 2000gb. Anyone else got it?

    • that would be awesome, nothing for me yet

      • Found it on their website :
Our FairPlay Policy (set out in General Terms of the Telstra Mobile Section of Our Customer Terms) applies to your 5G Home Internet Service. For the purpose of the FairPlay Policy we consider that excessive use is 2000GB or more a month for three consecutive months.

        • yeah but I guess speed will be capped for usage over 1Tb, currently its 25Mbps for me after 1 TB

          • @ujwols: You must get back to them and refer this.

        • I spoke to them regarding this. They said that speed is shaped after 1tb download and fair use goes to 2tb. Have you got a screenshot of your data allowance actually increased to 2tb?

I've had this for over a year, had a few problems a few months ago where all of a sudden I got a text letting me know that because I had taken the modem out of its location that my internet speed was being shaped. Only problem was I had not moved the modem even one centimetre…

It took over a week for this to get sorted out, a lot of support staff didn't know what I was talking about.

    Then it was fixed.

Then it happened again. This time it was sorted faster because I had the right keywords to say to the support staff, they accused me of moving the modem and then moving it back, I did not respond well to this.

If it happens to you, you need to let them know that the '5G home internet modem has been GEOLOCKED' that's basically the only thing they understand.

Hasn't happened for months now, hopefully won't happen again.

Telstra gave me nothing for my trouble.

But hey, what was I expecting, exactly.

  • +1

Just put my address in to check if this is available for me and before it even gave me a response I had a pop up asking why I decided not to sign up. Had to close the pop up to see that I couldn’t sign up…

  • +1

Anyone had experience connecting the 5g modem to a mesh network?

    • +1

      Yes. It works fine.

  • I want this amount of data and 5G. I dont need the modem. Does anybody know whether JBHifi or TGG has a deal for this?
    Thanks

  • 😥 I have basically been using my $89 200GB mobile plan as broadband.

5G Home Internet is not available at your address
This might be because Telstra 5G Home Internet isn’t yet in your area, or even if 5G is in your area, we can’t offer you 5G Home Internet until there is enough network capacity to offer the best 5G Home Internet experience.

Krok Telstra this should be free just like free public phone call nationwide. This is part of free communication and be provided by state free same as free primary education. Telstra, Qantas and Auspost these 3 should be fully state-owned corporations.

    • I remember even when the federal government owned a national telecommunication phone company called Telecom Australia it wasn't free for the public. You had to pay a monthly access fee and then on top of that local calls were charged and so was long distance. It was never free.

  • No bonus 50k points this time round?

  • So why am I currently paying $100 a month with Telstra?

    • Is that with unlimited data on NBN or 5G mobile broadband with a data cap?. I'd take unlimited 100Mbit NBN over data capped 5G any day. 5G has a higher latency compared to a wired broadband connection such as FTTP or even FTTN.

    • That's loyalty bonus… for them.

  • +1

Can I use this for gaming with a ps5 online or will lag be an issue?

    • Would not recommend if you care about a good ping.

  • Lag will probably be more of an issue on a wireless internet connection (such as the one in this post) than a wired one.

Especially if you're comparing different technologies offered by the same company (because it is conceivable that you could get worse lag on a wired connection if the cable is in poor condition or if the ISP simply sux).

But, on average, wired connections are less "laggy" (and this includes the connection between the modem and the console).

If you're looking at this particular offer from Telstra, if you scroll down to the bottom of the page, an answer to one of the "Frequently Asked Questions" may help you decide https://www.telstra.com.au/internet/5g-home-internet#lightbo…

"Can I Game On 5G Internet? Answer: If you download your games 5G Home Internet can be a great option. But if you’re an online gamer and serious about possible latency, where every millisecond matters, this may not be the plan for you".

    • I'm wondering if casual stuffing around on Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) would suffer with Telstra 5G. Superloop 100/20 - what I have now - doesn't go fantastic with it either…

  • +2

Telstra uses CGNAT for this offering so be warned.
There are ways around this via Cloudflare tunnels and your own domain name, but not for the faint hearted.

Otherwise, personally happy with the product and price.

  • It is unavailable at my address, but available next dooor! Go figure…

    • +1

Umm this may not be a good ideai if you don't know how to secure your network, but if you trust your neighbours have you thought about talking to your neighbour about possibly sharing the connection?

A good VPN (ideally at the router level) may be all that's needed to keep your network private and secure.

Having said that I'd probably never do this (unless I wanted to help a neighbour if their internet was bad and they couldn't improve it in any other way) and I know this is not a good idea for most people but it may bean option for some.

Oh, now that I think about it, maybe you could ask your neighbour if they could get it for you? You could take the modem and pay your neighbour in advance so that they don't worry about you leaving them with your debt.

      • Thanks mate! I like my neighbours, but will wait till 5G is available in my household :-)

  • +1

My address doesn't have access, but both my neighbours do. Amazing that they're able to deliver 5G coverage with pinpoint accuracy.

Here you go more reason to jump over 5G and ditch the crappy NBN

    • I think it depends on the type of infrastructure people have - if you have access to a decent NBN connection quality, you may choose to stay with them, especially if you're in an area where your 5G reception is poor and vice versa.

In the long term, I understand that 5G is the future, I'm just not sure it's for everyone right now.

  • Can you pick up the modem from Telstra store?

  • This deal has not expired, yet. I signed up a few minutes ago.
